  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Jarred I am literally checking this thread every hour. Don’t want to miss the announcement and get too far in the queue. Where will you be announcing availability and pricing of Komodo? Will you be announcing the option of Storm Trooper at the same place or will that announcement only be here on RedUser? Is there any place currently taking down deposits?

James, I think it is safe to take the rest of the weekend off... (famous last words) but at least till we know what happens with China, we won't know about the Stormtroopers.
And once that's done, then we'll get to the regular production run.

Jarred, if it's feasible, can you give approximate weights of the setups we've seen in these photos of Komodo in use? All other things being (roughly) equal, I know the weight will largely depend on the lens and whether it's RF, EF or PL.

I'm most interested in the (sans handle) Vincent Laforet config, assuming there's only one battery on the back, but I included the others because they're indicative of how people would often use the camera. Btw, does hot swapping the battery shift the weight enough to require recalibrating a gimbal? I've never used one so I don't know what the tolerances are like.

approximate weights

Not Jarred, but I've done some fun homework regarding Komodo. Actually a lot since summer of last year.

Glass is going to be the X-Factor in many rigs, but with a single battery and a lightweight prime and specifically that SmallHD 5" display you can have Komodo in a shooting configuration in....

Drumroll.......

Less than 4.5lbs. In fact I think with even a smaller battery you can likely get it "just" under 4lbs and still have a very reasonable camera uptime.

I think many of us will have different setups than these however. Like most humans will stick a baseplate on the camera and it will live there always. Handles will likely be something you have on or take off occasionally. That display isn't the lightest weight display either and some might opt for a heavier/larger screen. Some might not.

Getting into heavier cine-style glass like that Sigma and adding a decent adapter into the mix you are looking at 7-8lbs.

I would suspect for many you'll be looking at rigs between 6-12lbs depending on AKS attached to your cubic lizard camera.

Well just to throw a wrench into both of your calculations, This last week I've been playing with the Kessler Recon RC car and testing out to see what the smallest gimbal I could make work. The lens is the heaviest part.. but that top bolt on monitor just throws things off in a non-linear way when you are talking about balance with fast movements.

So I had the engineers turn on the in-camera top display preview.

Power the camera from the rig ( no batteries ) . no bolt on monitor, and a small pancake lens and it's pretty insane what starts to open up on a gimbal.

Nice, trick shot!

I love all the BTS test shots from Jarred Land. I've never been so pumped about a product launch !

I'm liking that RGB exposure visualisation on the bottom-left of the screen.

DOES ANYONE NOTICE 5000 ISO????????

DOES ANYONE NOTICE 5000 ISO????????

That's what I noticed too! :hurray:
Jarred, thanks for this little teaser! :)

I'm thinking of using 2x the smallest batteries, built in monitor and the Metabones Leica M to RF adapter paired with an apoqualia-g 28mm... Can't get lighter and better balanced than that!

Kooooool!!! And I see camera integration on the phone in the bottom right corner of the screen. Jarred, keep on at it—you guys are striking gold.

Sorry to hear about Chinese component delays. Hopefully it does not up the price too much. If you've locked down the discount, can you share the amount? Worst case scenario, are we looking at over $5K?

Are you going to send out an email to all Hydrogen owners when the list goes live?

Don't know the price of the camera yet, but the Hydrogen discount is $1000 off of whatever that price turns out to be.

The global supply chain issues wont change the amount of the Hydrogen discount, it just will likely affect the price of the limited run of pre-launch StormTroopers. As we sit, (and don't quote me or I will ban you :) best case is the stormtrooper costs $900 more, worst case they cost $1400 more if our vendor needs to pull out and move and that would hopefully just add a week to the very fragile 12 week stormtrooper target.

If that's the case, I'd better keep both eyes peeled for my chance to order a Stormtrooper!

...the very fragile 12 week stormtrooper target.
Handle with care, whisper it sweet little things and make sure it is not cold at night.

That apoqualia I just keep ordering more of. That is what we have been testing with all week. Such a bad ass little lens and yes, it doesn't get any smaller than that.

Careful with the 3rd party smaller batteries.. they need to be able to deliver enough amps and MOST of the small cheap little 2 cell batteries we have tried wont even turn the camera on.

I think there are some pretty powerful Canon BP batteries out these with d-taps? Could these be used to power a small LCS as well as the camera?

Thanks

Thanks! That's a substantial discount. Really appreciate all the info we are getting - helps me get my ducks in a row.

Damn, those are crazy small... Any thoughts on stealth Komodo?
