  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I cannot say if that camera is real or not. I have to be open minded - after all, remember the rumours about how the A7S would have a max ISO of 400,000? Okay, so maybe the highest usable ISO on that camera was really only 10K or so, but you get where I'm coming from. For a company like Canon to overtake Sony just like that... I have a hard time believing it at this point.

And RED has way out-paced pretty much every sensor manufacturer when it comes to cinema. You want to tell me that Canon just came up with this magical sensor tech that has not found its way into their cinema line? Or the 1DX? Or maybe that's the point: it is cinema camera with an RF mount that's going to cost $20K. Who the hell knows.

I could not agree more, it's hard to believe. But it's exactly what canon needs to regain footing. Either way it would be hard to swap over and leave the .R3D codec behind. As of now the 5dIV 4k file size is pretty much unmanageable, if it records to 8k in that same codec it will blast though a mind numbing amount of hard drive space.

Anything for you Phil :)

And yes it is considerably smaller. Here it is next to the 33mm RED COIN for size reference. 15v @ 3 amps

Sweet :) will the cable that goes from the adapter to the camera be a bit longer for those of us over 6ft tall? On the DSMC cameras, when I bring the cam eye-level, I need a little apple box for my adapter so it doesn't dangle :p

Even when you're small (I'm 5' 6¼") sometimes it happens (with other brands at least). ^_^

I remember someone asking weeks back if a Komodo footage could be released by Valentine's day, if i remember correctly, Jarred gave a positive answer.
Is this still relevant or will we have a first frame/footage later?

He said they will release footage when Graeme is happy with the color science. No specific timelines that I know of. But they have to be getting pretty close. We can only hope.

Correct.. in terms of R3D's. The Komodo SDK is being improved almost daily. Graeme really is on fire.

But you will start seeing finished Komodo footage very soon.

Will Komodo be a limited run camera, or can we expect it to be part of Red's lineup for years to come? I'm preparing for the reality of availability for Komodo. I was not an early Hydrogen adopter, and don't want to miss out on this opportunity.

And that’s a Lock.

This morning I just approved the last mechanical update to Komodo and it was an important one.

Time to start up the machines, kick-off tooling and start narrowing in on a date. Lots to still do.. but this was an important week for Komodo.

Early next week we will be releasing mechanical drawings and 3D models to our approved 3rd party partners so everyone can start making their own bits and pieces and be ready when we are.

Amazing! Congrats to the team on what will be an incredible tool for the industry.

Great job! Big congrats to you guys!

I can’t wait to Mount this thing pretty much everywhere. I won’t be crashing cars but maybe I should be lol.

Cool to see you going with external antennas, big question, are they SMA or RP-SMA?

WELL DONE!

Can't wait to add a couple to our 'toy box'. Great to see the journey and so pleased how this camera has evolved. What is also exiting is how it seems to have been developed with GDU gear to support and enhance the usability. Can't wait to pre-order and finding out how Hydrogen peeps get involved - we have 2 TI's.

Yeah Wireless is a pretty important part of Komodo... and the flush little internal antenna we had just wasn't cutting it. The SMA connector lets you put longer ones if needed as well. We tucked it in the side so its a bit protected. Was a bit of a pain in the ass to change that side panel to accommodate but there is nothing I hate more than those stupid right angle antennas that just always seem floppy and always stick out to far and always get broken off.

Anyways the range increase is significant. Our Engineers put the range increase to 300 feet. But they literally test in a perfect field in the middle of nowhere away from any other RF signals and no metal and no walls and no animals or people in the way and I am pretty sure they even cut the grass a little shorter on testing day to get that 300ft.

I've been testing this all week in my office ( a sound stage ) which is an absolute warzone... worst possible environment ever for wireless and I am getting anywhere between 80-100feet with this short little stubby antenna. That is direct connection to a phone, Using a router will (obviously) dramatically improve things.
