KOMODO....

Does anyone else feel like we're at the beginning of an epic journey?

It began with the cryptic announcement of the forging of a small B/C camera... Darkness had crept back into the reduser forum. Rumor grew of a shadow in the west, whispers of a nameless project, and the Komodo perceived its time had now come. It abandoned Jarred.

But something happened then the Komodo did not intend. It was lusted after by the most unlikely creature imaginable. Independent film makers looking for a small A camera.

For the time will soon come when Indies will shape the fortunes of all.

you must be a writer... that was eloquent.

I am days away from locking down the mechanical spec of Komodo so we can get on with it..... I really don't think you all want another change now:)

CFexpress2 is great.. but the spec was not stable enough during development of Komodo and the risk doesn't provide enough benefits to Komodo (on the capture side) to switch protocols.

It is a bit smaller than cfast which would of been an advantage for Komodo, but as such dissipating heat is a bit more complicated which means the size gain you get from the card size you lose from the extra hardware cooling it down, specially when you are using it for recording (proper) video bitrates.

We still are testing CFexpress... and if we can make it work then maybe we will use it for a camera down the road. But lets see where it all falls. Memory standards are at that point that seems to happen every 10 years where a bunch of options get thrown on the table and only a few last more than a couple years. I have 4 mirrorless cameras released last year and they all have different media options. SD, CFAST, XQD, and CFexpress. SD is holding on for dear life but damn that card is a survivor. It looks like XQD is throwing in the towel and submitting to CFExpress2. CFast lands in the middle somewhere. Probably not here for the long haul.. but the best option all things considered for the short time.

It's easy to read this and think we're being doomed to a passing standard, due to be superceded, but I've been using full size Red Mags for years now and they're still going strong.

Red have been able to prove that if you build it well enough it doesn't matter that you're using outdated gear because it still works as well as the day you bought it. Certainly sounds like Red is considering a move to non-proprietary media though which is very interesting, I just hope they follow the Apple model and provide an option for vetted accessories that have some sort of guarantee to work to Red's standards.

this was amazing

This thread is getting as long as a Tolkien book
And Komodo will only be released if someone throws all the remaining red ones into the fires of mount doom

Strangely I haven't asked Jarred, but I have a few things on my mind about Komodo recently considering it's size and power requirements.

- Does it come with an AC Adapter?
- I've thought about it, and I could be crazy, but Komodo could likely use a smaller AC Adapter than DSMC2?
- If so, lets see it!

As we're getting closer I'm also curious about the Komodo box itself. RED does a hell of a good job on packaging their products. Curious what sort of treatment Komodo gets considering it's price point.

There's a piece of me who wants a cute mini block style case similar to the DSMC brains long ago, but I think a snazzy box with a removable foam brick would equally if not more useful.

Phil,

Jarred did said that Komodo does indeed come with an AC adapter, and yes it is smaller than the DSMC2 one.

Yeah would be nice to see it :)

While he's at it, it would be nice to know the wattage draw.

Understanding that it will likely increase a bit as features/capabilities are added to the firmware, it would still be useful and also give a bit of an idea on how much heat it produces.

Seems like whatever hardware components allowed the use of lower voltage/ampacity batteries probably means less heat generation as well which would be excellent for us underwater housing users.

think when they release the original Epic 5K it was different, it was a small square box and changed the way people thought of cinema cameras

'

a mini version of the brain cases would be pretty cool Phil - you are right

Does anyone know what power solution has been used for the field testing when no batteries are attached directly to the camera body? I'd much rather hear from someone who has actually used the camera, rather than from a bunch of people who are just guessing. Wonder if this already existing accessory might do the trick:

The pictures of it in the snow, show what looks like a gdu engineered back cover. They said he used a wire to the battery up his sleeve into his jacket for those shoots.

Jarred confirmed that it uses a regular power in "The power in lemo is normal camera 12v ( 14.8v ) so you can use a V lock on a belt clip cabled to the Aux in etc."

Since Red puts nice energy into custom shaped foam padding for their shipping boxes, maybe they can make the foam to also fit in the dimensions of a particular Pelican case with space or pop-outs (in the foam) to make room for batteries and lens. As long as you're going to the trouble?

Jarred, I've been wondering one thing for the past few weeks, is this:

- Does the camera have a 4G / 5G antenna and an e-sim or sim slot for instant nomad broadcast?

hehehe :skep:
