KOMODO....

Ten years ago, Red was somewhat of a revolution in what it could deliver for its price. But today Red is only one guy in the neighborhood. Here's the solution; once again make the best camera possible for such a low price, it would disrupt the market and put Red ahead once again. Red was a democratizing company, putting top-tier quality in the hands of those who couldn't afford it before. This is the philosophy I am loyal to, not the marketing narrative that pushes a tribalist mentality against other brands in order to stay relevant.

Other brands won't sleep while this is happening.

Exactly my feelings. We have been a RED loyal company since its inception. From owning several RED one, Dragons, Scarlets and Heliums throughout the years because they were always on top and revolutionary. I want them to disrupt the market again. I hate the fact that I have to shoot a lot on other brands lately because they are offering more options (albeit at a small image quality sacrifice). I think like you said before Chris...the image quality difference is starting to diminish between brands...so its becoming a feature and workflow game. I love the look of RED and flexibility in workflow and I'd like to stick with it that's why I am hoping Komodo offers many of the features that the other brands are offering but with the RED touch and look!

I expect Komodo will do 4k at 60fps, but Canon compressed video is not in the same game.

If we speculate 4k @ 60fps then 5k would likely be 48fps and 6k 30fps. Seems reasonable given the size, weight, and cost difference compared to a DSMC2, especially if the image quality in all respects is at least as good as DSMC2.

Maybe not up to 60fps, but the Canon 1DX Mark III will have internal RAW:

Canon 1Dx Mark III: 60fps 4K DCI, 4:2:2 10-bit Internally, FF C-Log RAW, Improved DUAL PIXEL AF, CFAST Dual Slot...

- $8000... anything else?
- no thanks, take my money please and hurry up

:)

Lol...and hence that is why a lot of us are asking RED to compete with those cameras... ;-)

To the point I made about upcoming cameras being better than the current competition against Komodo, it underlines well how it's not about what competes with Komodo now before it's even out, which still is close enough in specs, but what will come out later when Komodo is actually ready for the market. If others keep on releasing better and better cameras, there won't be a reason to get Komodo if it's severely capped against the competitor's capabilities. All this feels like Hydrogen all over again.

Let's see what Sony will do to counter this... what's sad is I never used to be excited about Canon or Sony offerings...its a whole new game these days...

Red wins on so many levels, but for a good few people this will be their A cam. Sure it will be a B cam for lots of folk too, but it really needs to do everything well, or at least as well as ZCAM, Sony, Canon, BM, Panasonic etc who are all making good cases for my money right now. I'll hold off to see what Komodo brings to the fight and then go with what the best option and camera is. Just mad that it not being a Red is even a possibility given their past ethos and existing in house tech.

I guess the most confusing thing for me about the whole "existing in its own market" and being used in "situations it was designed for" is the Soderbergh pic, where the Komodo looks to be rigged up and shooting in a run-of-the-mill setup just as many other cameras could: with a lens that can't take advantage of its PDAF, on a tripod (which means that if Komodo has any in-camera stabilization, it wasn't being used), connected to an SDI monitor, etc.

Is it safe to assume that we still don't know about the the pièce de résistance of this camera?

The RF to EF adapter from Canon seems to fit your need :

I said BETTER solution. Way too much color shift within Canon adapter's variable ND. It doesn't fit my needs, unfortunately.
Those are samples from actual owners/users. First photo represents 1 stop increments. Second photo shows way too much cross pattern. Shouldn't happen since ND on this adapter has hard stops

You and me both :)

And does the Komodo sensor design team also agree? :)

You know every time I see that RF to EF adapter with variable ND it makes me want a RED EF mount with slot-in normal NDs. Like the Kippertie Revolva without the Revolva part and just simple single NDs. Maybe someone will make non-variable NDs for that RF to EF adaptor someday.

Woooohoho !!! Holly smokes Batman, Jim Jannard is retiring AND SHUTTING DOWN HYDROGEN ! So no H2 then ?
https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/10...W0pQp84v47x4Zz7A54HpOVvhEmtU7sDS8tkZvly2gYU3k

Sad news. All the best to Jim.

Yup, no H2, no modules. It looks like the Komodo discount is a consolation prize.

Any thoughts on Jarred's latest IG post? https://www.instagram.com/p/B4BBD03hPaG/

It was shot on Hydrogen, I think it's the first confirmed image from the camera. There are small handles attached on either side and no monitor - I wonder if this means that the top screen can be used as a tiny monitor?

My guess is a fast sensor readout making it perfect for action cam stuff. Less wires with wireless connectivity and much improved autofocus. It will appeal to Red owners because it will fit into the current workflow because of Redcode. Remember, this isn’t DSDMC3. I’m sure the requests many are looking for will be after Komodo.

Agreed.

Jarred keeps saying it's a tool for some kind of specific need(s), not a camera equivalent of a swiss army knife.
I understand everyone (including me) has become accustomed to cameras doing lots of frame rates and resolutions and codecs and stuff BUT I thnink it's kinda important to remember that it is supposed to be a CINEMA camera, intended (primarly and from what I understand about everything Jarred is sharing) to "cinema-esque" shooting scenarios, not a one man crew, not for I don't know news coverage or weddings videography or corporate works and so on. Sure, you'll be able to also do all those things, but the product is not targeted at those use cases and there are many (MANY) other products for that.

As I want to stay realistic and not let my inner sudo fanboyism of RED products get over my head I will take this with a huge grain of salt BUT I think what tjey are trying to do is a great (ultimate) small compact true cinema camera. And I hope they'll succeed at that.

So, not as many FPS as the Pocket 6K ? Whatever, if it can do 24/25/30 in 6K but with an awesome sensor I'm all in. Can push to 60 or whatever more in 4K ? Nice bonus.

I agree. I don’t need consumer bling features over solid high end IQ. The world is full of alternative cameras with all kinds of superficial features that may make it easier for some shooters take better pictures or shoot special effects, but it comes at the expense of ultimate image quality.

There is a reason Digital Bolex still brings close to its original purchase price on the used market despite all the newer alternatives. Exceptional film like image quality and color reproduction that still stands out if you have the basic photographic skills to use it.

Here’s hoping Komodo is a worthy and affordable successor.
