  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Here's some update because we are restless.

Maybe posted before, but supposedly from "Let Them Talk".

Not sure if Komodo was used as second unit, but if that's a Komodo, we can use regular Red monitors on it and have the same interface.

(I cut the pictures to not repeat them and make the page unreadable for some viewers^^)

If SO, I one step closer to being onboard with KOMODO. But again, I could not believe it to be different. Maybe there will be some sort of Komodo to DSMC2 adapter cable tho.

Fun fact : after your post I tried searching a bit for set pictures and came accros a 2013 picture where we can clearly see that Soderbergh has a personal customized RED Camera :p

I was figuring that Red made some cut down version of settings on the Komodo, similar to the ZCam having clear buttons on top. Like using the sidekick on the DSMC2 instead of display-based settings.
But if this image is from him using a Komodo, it definitely shows that Komodo will be within the same interface and software infrastructure as the rest of the Red family, which is a good thing. It further strengthens the idea that Komodo uses R3D and that we might be able to do all the same kind of things as on regular DSMC2's, like frame guides and the powerful Gio-scopes. That makes the camera quite powerful compared to the competition.

By the way, something just clicked in my head : IF the sensor is Full Frame, that mean we will be able to use one of the Kipon 'Baveyes' Focal Reducer lens adapter to use with Mamiya645 lenses or Hassblad's ! (those adapters do the same thing a speedbooster to for using FF lenses on S35 : it will reduce the medium format image circle to the full frame of the sensor... And I really love what I've seen with that on Sony cameras and Mamiya 645 lenses !)

EDIT : it would obviously work if the sensor is S35 BUT it won't have the same effect. :p

100 pages of dribble about nothing. If you have something, SHOW IT..otherwise just ...
What is it, buying time? Chinese are coming and a big way, cheap way and fast way. So hold on to your hats boys, things will get crazy and fast next 2 years...

If you go into your forum profile settings you can increase number of displayed posts per page. Then you only have 26 pages to complain about.

With the release of the Sandisk CFExpress cards, any new thoughts on this? I get it if you stay with CFast... The R&D has already been spent. But it'd sure be nice to be spending money on media I can use for many years with this little guy and others into the future. CFast is on its way out it seems

agreed i think they should take a second look as it would be nice to focus on one highend card in the future for all your needs, seems like it will be a new standard in most new cameras.

At some point they have to call it pencils-down on the design and run with what they have. CFast will still be relevant for a long time to come and current media does not even fully exploit the capabilities of the standard. CFExpress might be something to explore for the future. Looks like it's an amped up version of XQD. Which reminds me, that while not officially announced as far as I know, there are forthcoming revisions and improvements to the CFast format.

While I agree with you to some extent, this is a new camera and while it's still in the beta stage, it should take advantage of all the new technology that's available going forward. It seems all the new cameras coming out that's going to have some heavy media lifting to do will take advantage of this card as opposed to going out to an external recorder in order to handle the heavy data rates.

Just yesterday, my Delkin Devices 633X kept choking on Canon EOS R 120 Mbits per second IPB footage. Cameras like media with plenty of headroom. I like the peace of mind my media isn't going to be the bottleneck.

Let face it, CFExpress cards are inexpensive, They're fast as all get out, They're future proof.

Komodo is the future. CFExpress is the future. I hear wedding bells.

I'm not an engineer so read this with a huge grain of salt BUT you can't compare SD cards with CFExpress or CFast cards. They don't use the same protocols. At all. And you can't compare how an EOS R performs writing to a card with how the C500MKII will do or an FS7 or a BMD camera or a RED Camera. Same reason.

CFAST 2.0 is plenty fine. On RED EPIC CF Dragon 6K, FF6K@60fps and Redcode 7.1 (the lowest compression rate the camera can do at this framerate and FF6K) the datarate is 255MB/sec which is more or less half of what CFAST2.0 can do and I don't expect KOMODO 6K to do better than that. Okay, MAYBE Redcode 6:1 instead of the 7:1 @60fps but that would be a luxury. The fact is that the camera is not expected to be more expansive than a DSMC2 Dragon-X (quoting Jarred here : "not less than 5000$ except for Hydrogen One owners"). To achieve that "low price" they obviously have to cut corners. A new sensor, yes, and making the cmaera compatible with non-proprietary parts and accessories well established in the market so for the manufacturer side of things the hardware and licences are the cheapest possible and for the user side of things that makes the camera the cheapest possible.

CFAST 2.0 might not be the card format with the latest sexiest marketing push and specs (on paper... XQD has awesome specs on paper and it's slow as f*** to offload and format... By the way, Panasonic on the 6K shooting wariant of their new S1 line of cameras, the S1H, chose to get rif of the XQD slot in favor of a second SD slot... I do believe it has to do with the cost of the format as I can't see any technical reason to do so otherwise) BUT it's a well established format already in use in high end "cinema" equipment (Arri Alexa Mini for one, BMD URSA Mini Pro, Pocket 4 and Pocket 6K, Canon C300MkII, C700 and C700FF) and it should work well enough with Komodo while keeping the costs down.

What I think what we'll see in the near future is a worldwide adoption of CFExpress by pretty much everyone. I'll be happy to get rid of nearly all my different card readers. Also the transfer speed advantage this poses for us in the future will be welcomed with open arms.

These new photos are about as revealing as a shy stripper in a burka.

Apparently, it seems that Sony will be unveiling 'FX9' ("Full Frame 6K FS7") at IBC.
Seems it will cost 10K€ w/ FS7MKII body trade-in.

SO... right now everything we know about Komodo6K looks good to me.

My 2 cents on the cfast/express/whatever issue: After a few years, my Sandisk SSD (that I record proxies to) hit the end of its write cycle life and failed. My mini-mags are still going strong. Seems like there might be differences in reliability with different kinds of flash memory, and seems like Red did something to make theirs extra dependable (and expensive).

The key is the specific controller chip built into the drives. If the camera media management is optimized for one controller used in dedicated media, commercial media might not perform as well or last as long with a different one.
In some cases that have popped up with tested and approved commercial media for BM cameras, a change to a new controller with new production runs of the same brand and model designation has caused problems.

except that we have no idea of the specs for Komodo, these new cameras being released like the canon c500 have specs that rival RED's higher end cameras, for Komodo to have similar specs it would have to almost make RED's high end models obsolete, which is fine by me, but would be a weird move, but maybe you do what you have to do to compete. or, its going to have serious limitations. so not sure how you can say komodo looks good to you, well, i guess im saying, looks aint everything.

We know it's 6K, we know it will record to CFAST2.0, we know it will be around 5K$, has an EOS R/RF mount and most probably S35 sized sensor.

To ME, it looks like a ZCAM but with redcode raw and RED voodoo inside.

Except the fact that there's a 7" Red monitor with the same interface as with any other Red camera. Which indicates that it's not a watered-down "prosumer" version of a Red but a full-blown Red with probably lesser performance.
Of course, because we can't see the actual camera, that might just be a regular Red, but the film is supposedly shot on Komodo as A-cam, so hopefully. I think having the same settings available as on regular Red's is huge and great improvement over the competition.
