  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

The only downside though is that the ZCam equivalent in price is full-frame 8K.

Yes but if the tradeoff is full fledge REDCODE and IPP2 I'm so IN !

And by the way, how could Komodo's top not look like the Zcam on your link ? It would make so much sense ! :p

Redcode is the strongest case for Komodo and the drawbacks of a large sensor in a low performing body/processor are that the readout is slower and you get more rolling shutter as well as lower max fps in FF mode.
So, benefits of s35mm would be to have more fps and faster-rolling shutter, but at the same time, having a full-frame enables you to maybe do 25 fps in full-frame while you crop to s35 for higher framerates and better rolling shutter.

In such small bodies like the Z Cam and Komodo, the processor is also not working in super hot mode, because better cooling would be required. So the processor might be as good or a bit lower as in a regular Red, but because it handles a lower workload so therefore it doesn't need to be cooled in the same way.

Don't forget that Komodo seems to have MASSIVE cooling vents ;-)

EDIT : on the first picture, the lense is a Leica/Leitz Summicron-C 35mm. It is described as "Premium prime lenses designed for larger sensors on film and television productions". It has an image circle of 36mm diameter. It may not indicate anything BUT... Larger than s35 sensor ?

Sure, we have to see what the performance is. But judging by that cooling, I'll guess that the processor is an older cheaper type, therefore it needs to work harder with a lower spec Red. If it's a newer kind of processor model, that would imply quite a heavy load in-camera.
I think we'll see specs at IBC together with a trailer or material from "Let Them Talk". Depends on when the premiere is for it, but because it's HBO MAX it's not the same period of time between shoot and release. This is what I hope at least.

Z Cam also has a 6K Full-Frame, which can do 6K 60 Fps full-frame, which is impressive in a body with no real visible cooling.

Damn you're right : I see no visible cooling on this thing ! How do they do that ?!

No Komodo news at IBC, Komodo still is deep in it's public and private testing phase :)

By their spec info, it's a full metal house that dissipates the heat through the body alone, but yeah, it's weird how they can keep the thing cooled for a 60 fps full-frame 6K sensor. Maybe due to the lower codec or something, but still pretty magical.

People seem to be dying due to the lack of news here, maybe another Instagram-tease would keep the crowd fed :tongue_smilie:

Those look like more robust than the one from Sandisk. (but again, Komodo doesn't especially need these)

The only thing I care about when it comes to media is how robust they are and how much they cost. If the CFexpress cards are better in those regards I think that it would be a good move to change over to that, otherwise, stick with the CFast.

Hot take:

Jarred's not satisfied with current specs/performance/something. Driven by competition? The world may never know.

Would the Komodo exist if the H1 Module had actually been produced by the ODM? If it had, wouldn't it be out 6 months ago long before the competition announced these 'bargain basement' deals?

Guess we get to pontificate for a few more months :P

EDIT:

Preparing for next wave of "Guess I should go ahead and order Camera X rather than wait...."

Ahhhh, don't say that...... Really hope its not dragged out or bogged down.....

Some of the grandiose expectations for Komodo are sure to disappoint, didn’t Jarred say Komodo does a few things very well. That says a lot.

Depends on what those few things are.
Framerate/resolution wise, if it's like the S1H from Panasonic (but with true 6K24p thank you, and true 4K anamorphic thank you again :p) but with Redcode RAW I'll be OK with that. It wouldn't be as "wow" as I hope but a great tool nonetheless.

EDIT : so, seems that RED RANGER Helium S35 and RANGER Gemini S35 are available to BUY (with RANGER MONSTRO VV sill reserved to rental houses) ? What if the company slowly phase out the modularity of DSMC2 in favor of Rangers and Komodo ? (I'm just wondering, I am NOT wishing for it)

This Komodo looks really great!
She could serve as a discrete camera in cinema quality to have always in his backpack ready to shoot the unique moment, the beautiful things in life. Interesting for experimental cinema, timelapse... it makes think the AATON 8 - 35 that Jean-Luc Godard had commanded at Beauvialla (a very small 35mm cinema camera that he always liked to keep with him) I preordered as possible the Camera! If there could be a small discount for owners of Scarlet-W it would be excellent ^^

Hard to really know and know everything the future holds. DSMC2 is now and DSMC3 has been mentioned. Ranger is the newest released body type and in effect taps into DSMC2 technology and likely has an upgrade path into the future. Komodo is the newest type of camera from RED and it's not out yet. DSMC3 was targeted to the earliest 2020 when brought up years ago, mostly mentioned to show that RED was committed to teh DSMC2 form factor, which has been the case now as it's expanded several different cameras, sensors, and now a unified body.

I think in some ways the move from here for RED is three fold, at least this is sort of what I'd like to see happen:
1. Ranger Style - All in Oner Production Camera.
2. DSMC3 - Modular Cameras you can build out the way you feel necessary.
3. Compact Cinema - Komodo/Cube Style. Tiny camera capable of high image quality.

I don't know if that makes sense or if even is what the path is at this point, but based on what's available now I can see it going this way. I don't think RED would drop Modularity as a concept, they are pretty much the company who made it popular in digital cinema cameras and now several other companies are tapping into the form factor and strategy.

That said, technology is advancing rapidly. In major sectors that effect camera technology we're on quarterly jumps at this point outside of broad annual technology leaps, it's never actually been this way until the last year. We might see more inclusive designs in smaller form factors in the coming months and years.

I have a list of wants and wishes outside of my core needs from a camera system. There's some stuff I'm hoping RED aims for on several fronts, but all the big wants are hard to do for any company. Some of the predictable advancements will have to come out of necessity to remain competitive in the coming years.
