  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

If it’s genlockable and preferably tetherable I’ll buy a pallet of them for nutty multicam and photogrammetry rigs.

Very curious to see your results. This is what I was hoping for when I first saw the form factor. Would you use the SDI 4K output or do you think the extra resolution in 6K R3D overcomes the spatial characteristics of wavelet based compression?

Definitely doesn't matter for cinema as much but for photogrammetry, I' don't have enough experience to know what's feasible and where the potential obstacles are.

One thing that just occurred to me is that lower power draw also leads to lower heat output, meaning lower cooling requirements. Meaning quieter.

Also it leads to way lower power requirements at scale for building capture volumes with 10s or 100s of sensors. Neat trick all the way around.

I think Matthew is a great designer, but if I have one wiggle, the arrows on the plastic eject buttons should be pointing upwards :) But I think we can figure that out.

I think the arrows are indicating the direction you need to push the button into the body. Up arrows would make me try and slide the button up like a slide switch or rocker switch.

If this has an s35 sensor with usable ISO 3200 (or 6400) and delivers in terms of image quality, which I can't imagine RED screwing up, this will likely be my next camera. Price is hinting at being about right too. Wasn't it said it would be under $6k if you don't own a Hydrogen, which you clearly don't need to run this thing?

This might be the first RED I put a deposit down on and buy brand new...

So a camera that has the same specs as DSMC2 for a fraction of the price?

This is shaping up to be a very beautiful little beast!!!
Thanks to Steven Soderberg for sharing this and Jarred and Matthew for making this happen!!!
Can't wait to get my hands on my own :001_tt1:

Likewise. Honestly, my most significant beef with DSMC 1&2.

Take a number stand in line. What you guys DON'T understand is, when more resolution, lesser compression and power is required there is going to be heat generated with today's electronics. There is no way around it when it comes to remove that heat, you need more airflow or liquid cooling (in a practical way.) It is nearly impractical to have liquid cooling in a current evolution of a "Digital Cinema Camera". Go figure.

Therefore, fans needs to be either larger and slow (rather quiet) or smaller and fast spinning which induces more noise. Pick your choice.

Thus, writing screenplays to accommodate ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement) and audio sweetening.

Looks great in terms of form and having A) a mount that allows for internal ND, B) a battery and media system that is reasonably priced/convenient, means that most of the things that were downsides to getting a RED if you work mostly alone are already not issues on Komodo. All this performance IS offered or promised with the BM 6K camera. RED needs to do better in this arena. As a RED owner/user/ and a freggin' fanboy, I want this shit to be ironclad!

Think REDCODE RAW
Also, the RF mount is much more capable, as is the 4K SDI !!!

Plus, you just can't beat those looks!
Except maybe by the DSMC2 line and my precious RED One :001_tt1:

Speaking of, I'm thinking a Monochrome Komodo would be sweet!!!
Jarred, what should I do to ask for a Monochrome Stormtrooper Komodo to go alongside a CF Komodo?

Wishful thinking, I know, but it never hurts to ask :)

We’ll see how prices shake out, but I would spend twice the price for Komodo over either of the low end BM offerings.
Not a big BM fan, though their image quality and color science has improved tremendously with the current gen cameras. But the images still look “thin” to me.

6k cut of the Monstro 8k VV makes perfect sense on so many levels if you want to keep the cost of Komodo reasonable for a high performance prosumer class camera.

A: They can use 8k Monstro wafers that are rejected because of edge defects and recut them.

If you mean trimming an 8K Monstro die that was rejected because of edge defects... most likely not. You'd have to account for re-routing all sorts of things like power, control, and I/O, so just trimming a sensor isn't likely to work well.

Red's probably re-using the pixel design from Helium, Monstro and Gemini... not to pretend that they're identical, but they probably all have a lot in common, because why not re-use something that works really well and costs a lot of time, effort, and money to develop?

B. They already have a mechanical platform to support it in production for Gemini, minimal development needed to fit the smaller housing.
That's also a massive oversimplification, since Gemini uses the far more power hungry DSMC2 electronics... the "minimal" part is rather unikely.

C. They already have the processing and color science developed for it. No development costs to dial in a totally new sensor.

Not none, but certainly less -- another reason that I'd expect Red to re-use the pixel design that it developed as much as possible.

D. They can produce it pretty quickly with a short development cycle for the platform and hopefully very few bugs to deal with compared to starting from scratch
E. 17+ stops of DR! More than enough resolution for 4K video and adequate resolution at full frame for most stills requirements.
F. 6K for $6k (including an H2 phone) has a nice ring to it.

Realistically, anything over 12 stops is is plenty of dynamic range for anyone competent, but I'd be surprised if Red were satisfied with a sensor that had less than 16. :)

I take offense at this! I do a lot of documentation (for the California Air National Guard) inside and outside large aircraft. I need every ounce of dynamic range I can get! Many shots are needed from cockpits to boom operators refueling aircraft to flying with the cargo doors down. Some of us need the extremes.

While they look a lot like LEMOs, AFAIK, ODU is a competitive product - not a LEMO variant.

Cheers - #19

Maybe my wording was a bit off. Yes, ODU is the company that is making these - but they’ve been designed to replace the LEMO connectors RED was previously using and are made to be compatible with the current DSMC2 ports. His post states “designed by Matt, manufactured by ODU.”
