  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Name a solution for iPhone? And why doing that over internal CFast is better?

What do you mean name a solution? You mentioned "your phone's storage". The iPhone 11 Pro can have up to 512GB of very fast internal storage.

I wasn't thinking of it as a method of capturing R3Ds onto phone storage, I was thinking more that if phones are somehow going to be integrated with this camera it would be interesting if a connected phone could capture HEVC versions of recorded clips or if a video signal can be sent to the phones then what kinds of interesting things could be done with it as Mark Pederson mentioned. Phones have some incredibly heavy hitting image processing hardware these days.

512GB won't get you far in terms of R3D RAW. That's my point with storage. There are some here who think that the phone will act together with the R3D format, which I find both unrealistic and unnecessary. Just as you say, and I agree, the possibilities with other technologies within our phones make for a very interesting combo. Live streaming, editing on the phone (on the go), proxy recording (as I don't think this will be a feature of the Komodo like on the DSMC2), makes for very interesting uses of having a phone attached to the camera.

The live streaming and editing "on the go" are very interesting for this kind of high-quality camera. I don't know if there's any other camera enabling this at this level of quality. I didn't think I was going to be interested in these kinds of features, but the more I think about it the more I see the potential for this setup.

On Komodo ( and Hydrogen ) those pins carry a form of CSI and Ethernet which allows the Komodo to mimic a camera to the phone.. i.e when hooked up to a phone the phone thinks the Komodo is it's own camera.

That's fantastic. This yields access to control Komodo with Android Camera2 and Google Camera X API and to synchronise it with all the hardware of the phone.

Hey guys!

I’ve been trying to follow as closely as possible with the Komodo. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light based on what infos been given.

I understand that it’s been confirmed to not be a high speed camera. Is this statement made as a whole or at the max 6K resolution? Can we still hope for high frame rates at lower resolutions? For example 4K 120? Or is the general guess that the camera will limit all resolutions to standard frame rates???

Cheers!

We don't know the framerates yet but you are correct in the fact that it won't be a highspeed camera.
Jarred hinted that it might do 4K60 however. (So I suppose at 6K iy will max out at 30)

It will probably do 60fps at 4k, but nothing has been officially annnounced.

that doesn't completely suck. We now just may be able to do something we couldn't before... two things actually... so it could actually turn into a really good thing... a sliver lining.

And yes Komodo discount for those that bought Hydrogens before the module was cancelled is still in play. And more importantly for some.... the pole position.

Heh Heh I shot that chris bell photo on Komodo with the Minolta 85 + adapter :)

I actually don't know exactly when the module was cancelled, I bought the hydrogen tianium about 2 months ago believing in the H2, which was still promised to happen at some Point. Would bei quite bad If people who bought into the hydrogen before the whole thing was cancelled could not participate in the discount of the komodo.

Not entirely sure. Jarred could be referring to this March 12 post by Jim on h4vuser:

Some have noticed that we have taken down the images of the 2D module from our website.

The reason for that is because we are currently in the middle of radically changing the HYDROGEN program. As I have said before, everything can and will change.

A series of obstacles and then new discoveries have given us the opportunity to significantly improve the entire program, not only for HYDROGEN but also for RED.

The changes create new opportunities to better satisfy the professional image capture customers as well as the casual consumer for the HYDROGEN program.

The RED team, led by Jarred Land, as of now will now be fully in charge of the professional image capture program for HYDROGEN and the HYDROGEN team is fully engaged on the new in-device image capture system. Both are major advancements to what was previously posted.

We are excited to share details as soon as we file the patents and lock down the changes and are all pretty excited about what is coming…

As a side note… all HYDROGEN customers will be “obsolescence obsolete” when buying into the new professional image capture program.

Jim

Or he could mean this July 24 post:

Additionally, we eventually realized that the original camera module would have to change due to the fact our ODM was not going to competently complete the module that they committed and guaranteed to do. Our best option was to modify the program and bring it back into the RED house. We have completed the new and extraordinary sensor and redesigned the package. Jarred at RED will be posting about Komodo fairly soon. Its capability will vastly exceed the originally planned module. The HYDROGEN One and Two will integrate with this new camera. While it does not replace its big RED brothers, it will certainly be a complimentary camera for cinema grade images at the highest level at lower pricing

Possibly yes.
But those Posts actually achieve to sell more of those phones making people believe in the Future of this Project. Now those Guys sit there with an overpriced futureless piece of Tech.
Never mind. I Just don't get that decision, but hopefully that changes as well.

I skimmed through the h4vuser forums and I don't think anyone from Red Hydrogen ever explicitly stated that modules were cancelled. When asked directly if the modules were happening, Jim said this:

It will be different than posted. Can’t give details but much more powerful and a better tool for pro users, which was the point of the module in the 1st place.

Jarred, maybe you can give us a cut-off date for the Hydrogen discount?

I can only guess the Hydrogen discount, If there will be such, naturally can´t be more than the price of the hydrogen itself.

So very unlikely its more than 1000 bucks discount, if that sum is what makes you buy a camera like this or not, then its probably not the camera you need.

When adding batteries, memory, adapters, tax and other stuff onto a camera that starts at 5k USD, then I think 1000 bucks give or take will be a quite marginal sum.

You may be right Björn. But one could use a phone as a monitor put together quite a low cost kit:
Komodo: $4500 (a guess, with discount)
3 batteries @ ~$100 each: $300
Charger: $200
2 x Cfast 256GB @ ~$350 each: $700 (not sure exactly which cards will be good enough)
Phone cradle: $200 (also guessing here)
TOTAL: $5900

Assuming the discount is around $1000, the difference between $5900 and $6900 is ~15% which is quite significant. But I agree it is not reason enough to buy this camera over another.

Yes, and then tax an shipping.

Yes, or a set of RF lenses. Filters etc. Just as with DSMC cameras this is far from complete when getting the brain.

To be fair, there isn't a single camera package out there that won't require you to buy batteries, media, and lenses. Granted, those might be new things if you don't own any of the type that this camera takes. But I've got RF Mount adapters, three 512GB CFast 2.0 cards from C300 II days, and found the Canon BP batteries for $20 a pop (got three of them) on MPB.com in great condition. So, the Komodo will be just the price of the camera for me (and I'm sure there are a lot of others in the same boat).
