  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Battery F.A.Q.

If anyone is interested Filmtools has 4x Canon BP-955's in stock. You will have to select chat option on website to purchase. I worked with Luke to buy 4X just now.

I have 4x batteries and no Komodo!

Sorry if I've missed this along the way somewhere, but what is Komodo's amp draw?

I'm eyeing the new Anton Bauer Titan Micro batteries because they're the perfect size, and the 45w is 8a max, while the 90w and 150w are both 10a max.

I'm wondering if the 45w @ 8a will give enough head room to also power a monitor and perhaps a focus motor?

What does that do? Is it worth that much more?

You’ll usually hear it referred to as a DDM(diagnostic discharge module), especially on larger brick(gold mount/v-mount) chargers. It runs an automated process on the batteries along the lines of it fully charges them, holds them to check the rate of self-discharge and then does a controlled discharge and full re-charge to ascertain the health of the battery and calibrate them(depends on the battery/system). When I used to run Anton Bauer’s on Anton chargers, when the battery was put on the charger and it was determined that it need to be calibrated so that it would give you the most accurate and reliable reading for power meters(they called it AutoCal, I believe), the charger would beep a few times and the cycle would start. It also took at least 12-24, so it wasn’t something you wanted to do when you needed the battery the next morning.

Hello everybody, just to help you guys out with the model selection, here is a simple breakdown:
TC400 - four positions, diagnostics LCD display, an optional test module
TC200i - like TC400 but 2 positions instead of four
TC40 - basic charger, 4 positions
TC200 - like the TC40, but 2 positions instead of four

TC40 and TC200 are almost as fast as TC400/TC200i
Hope this helps, please DM if have a question or post your question here

P.S. Oldtimers, thank you for your loyalty :-)

Not sure if these are chipped or even work. Want as many power output options as possible to reduce the number of batteries to carry.

Hawk Woods BP-98UX 98Wh 14.4V Direct Replacement Lithium-Ion BP-U Battery with 2x D-Tap Ports for Sony FS7 and PMW/PXW Cameras

Like these; but compatible: I deally RED approved

Any others with more output options?

The small HD monitors use Canon L batteries, and I really don't want to haul BP AND L batteries and chargers around with me.

So what is everyone else using that fits on the back, hot swappable, but can power the small HD, and/or iPhone too?

The Hawk Woods batteries you linked to are Sony BP-U style batteries(14.4V). And the Kastar are Canon BP-A series style(also 14.4V). The Komodo uses Canon BP 9xx style batteries(7.4V). Completely different(both physical connection/mount and voltage).

Also, not all smallHD monitors use Canon L series. The Focus line use Sony L series. But regardless, you’re not gonna have just one type of battery to power your Komodo set-up, unless you use a Gold Mount or V-Mount on an adapter plate and also feed the monitor with a cable off of that. I’m not aware of anyone making Canon BP 9xx style batteries with built-in P-taps(You generally just see it on the 14.4V batts, but technically it’s possible to, CSWX makes a 7.2V small Panasonic style battery with a P-tap and USB. Someone should probably talk to Blue Shape, since they are building licensed and chipped BP-9xx batteries, now).

Something I’ve been confused about is I’ve read that the Komodo wants 7.4v but that the blueshape are 7.2v (and are hoping to be approved). How does that voltage difference work?

There is no difference between them, except in the name. Technically, the fully charged voltage is 8.4V, discharging to about 6V. 7.2-7.4V is somewhere in the middle, at about 50% charge level. Some battery manufacturers call them 7.2V while others call them 7.4V. HTH

Thanks, that’s super helpful

any chanches to find a NP-F adapter to BP? I have a lot of these NP-F batteries and i would like to use it

Komodo 6K generally averages around a 25 watt draw, occasionally dipping below, and can go as high as 37 watts if you have all the things enabled. Generally for day to day shooting I'm getting that 25 watt number.

Hummm... The RS2 Focus Motor port is 8V/3A. if you are getting the 25W number then, in this case, we might be able to Power Komodo (only) from R2S Focus Port, NO?

Has anybody experienced a 3rd party battery dying while recording with the komodo? Does the footage get corrupted?

I’ve lost footage on Komodo, though we had not updated to the new firmware. We had it hooked up to a gold mount battery when it lost power but still, don’t even test it with a third party battery. Don’t learn the hard way like I did, change that battery!

Added "RED Certified" as it appears they've officially been testing things and approving them.

Also added the new RED REDVOLT BP batteries to the list. Going to have to assume those work and have been tested :)

Jarred said the REDVOLT BPs are $170 each, pretty sure they are the same runtime of 955s.
