  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Batteries

After total frustration and desperation I found Canon BP-975's at a rental house. Yes, they are used but considering I still have fully functioning 5D MKII batteries I decided to gamble and buy 4. They shipped them overnight just in time for a shoot and all have checked out and function at spec. I quickly bought another 4. BTW- bought 2 chargers at $63 each and the batts were $72 each.

Adorama has a few in-stock right now used... Bp-975's

I'd be looking to build a right angle lemo to Ptap, know of any already existing cables that might work? I'm just trying to confirm if it's the same cable connection as the 2pin Teradek connections, because that makes it easy to make/build (maybe having to reverse the polarity to work?)

EDIT: :embarassed: I just realize that Komodo Lemo input is Male and not female like on the Teradek gear... :) Hopefully I haven't yet ordered my connectors

NEVER USE A TERADEK CABLE ON YOUR KOMODO ! THE POLARITY IS NOT THE SAME.

....I was looking for a solution to power my Komodo and checked polarity of the Teradek cables to see if I can use my cables ( D-Tap to Lemo 2 Pin 0B).

KOMODO Lemo is wired this way : PIN 1: + 7 to 17V DC
PIN 2: Ground

( I haven't found any posts that spotted that risk (?)....Always test your custom cable with a tester before using it ):blush:

The scary thing with 2 pin lemos, you can grab them push in and twist the outside housing of the connector 180 degree and viola polarity is now swapped... which is both good and bad in so may ways. :)

I had the problem once but it's not normal. If you can reverse polarity just by twisting the outside housing there must be a bad assembly or something is broken inside. Either way don't use it like it is.

That goes for pretty much all 2 pin lemon then. Hold it tight between you fingers so the tsp is pushed in and twist. They are built to work that way.

Guys what V-Mount Battery option do you think is better for use with the Komodo, the Nano Core SWX or the GDU batteries? They where very similar in size and specs, any insight I will appreciate.

Just my .02: Batteries get dropped and banged around a lot. Metal dents... Why would you want a battery with a thin metal shell over it? Also think about handling metal in really hot or cold environments.

Nano Core SWX or the GDU batteries?

I believe the GDU batteries are based on the Dynacore 98s Tiny. Your preference between them just depends on your feelings on the metal shell.

As for Core vs. GDU, both are based on quality cells, and the specs are very similar. I suspect that in practice you won't notice a big difference in performance.

Thank you for the insight. What do you think about their sizes? I never use any of those batteries and I'm trying to keep my configuration the smallest is possible.

Where did you read that it was a feature ? I've looked in the Lemo documentations without seeing anything like that. I've also twist all my Lemo 2 connectors in and out in every possible way without "succes" :-))) ....

Don't you think that if it's supposed to work that way there would be major warnings in all the manuals ?

Jair, About the V-Mount Batteries.I would recommend any compact style V-mount equal or under 98 Wh Like Swit PB-M98S or CoreSWX NANO Micro V-mt or BEBOP.... Their dimensions will fit the Komodo nicely : around 10 X 7 X 5 cm for a 98Wh SWIT. Heavier batteries can be useful if you want to balance the camera when it's on your shoulder. Setting a V-mount Plate away from the camera body on 15mm rods

...someone from LEMO has confirmed what I said about the Lemo connectors.

Bjorn, you should open your connectors and check the assembly.

I think i'm going to go for the 2 types of batteries, maybe 2 or 4 canon and 2 mini v-mount batteries. Thanks for the insight Thibaut.

I just received a couple Canon BP975s I'd ordered from B&H some weeks back. Maybe a fluke-- or maybe these are finally coming back into wider availability?

I know B&H had some 975 in stock for a few hours the other day. I checked at like 2am and they were there. Thankfully I ordered 2 because they were out of stock again when I got up later that morning.

It definitely seems like a good sign though, even if they are shipping in small numbers.

Ordered 4 BP975's from B&H in prep for receiving the Komodo, along with a bunch of lenses and a charger. Got everything else in the order, no batteries. I've been looking everywhere, no one seems to have any BP style batteries at all.

Designing Komodo with these batteries in mind seems to be the worst part of this camera. If it's true that Canon has stopped making them and they are going out of stock, what is Red's solution here?

I would suggest Red starts creating their own batteries, like the Red bricks, otherwise, this will soon be a major problem for anyone buying Komodo in the future or any Komodo owners needing to restock further down the line.
If we are stuck to what Canon will and will not do with these batteries in terms of production, we have no choice but to use V-Locks instead and the whole form factor goes out the window. Please just make your own batteries, otherwise, this will be out of control.

I highly doubt Canon would stop producing these batteries, especially given the current market. Some web article investigated this for a bit: https://ymcinema.com/2020/10/12/can...-of-stock-should-red-komodo-users-be-worried/

We got a response from B&H regarding this status: “Both batteries are in back order status with no known date of availability. We imagine the situation is similar with other dealers. We would say most of this situation is due to the current pandemic affecting not only shipping but manufacturing as well”.
