  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Komodo Batteries

How about the small RED batteries, could they be used with another backplate?

37Wh/2500mAh 14.8V Lithium-ion battery
For DSMC & DSMC2 camera systems

Redvolts seem to be twice the 7.4V, so hopefully, there will be some solution for those that want to use as much RED parts as possible:)
 
D-Tap is usually 12V. Which again, is too much for the battery plate. If you wanted to go from a D-Tap, just go to the LEMO on the back that supports 12v.

This is cool but unnecessary. We are using Dtap directly to the Power in port in a simple clean cable and it works great. No need for the big battery adapter and the loss of efficiency with a down conversion.

Yes to hot swap. Works great. And very very nice when you are blowing the camera up to have 2 batteries on there in case one gets pooched in the violence. That's actually happened more than I ever thought it would in the testing over the few months.

Well, you mentioned the redesign to secure the battery locking mechanism. So I feel pretty safe now :)

Soon as some form of AF is functional, I'm actually considering getting one for my father who's an earthquake engineer and wants something compact to lug around everywhere he goes around the world to document the damages caused by natural disasters.
The camera may not need to be explosion-proof, but it will have to keep on rolling even if it is buried by debris.
Mounting it on a drone to do inspections with a rectilinear lens such as the Laowa 12mm 2.8f and such would also be really cool!

Your baby Dragon is going to make a lot of folks very happy!

Isn’t that what Andy is suggesting? Going directly into the power port from Dtap?
 
Curious if those older BP-915 batteries power Komodo. Would make for a super slim setup for short runs when needed.

I know its confusing but you want the ones that are 7.4v, not the 14v.

Look for the BP-955. Thats what we are using here and they are about $140 each. They do make bigger ones ( and smaller ones ) But the BP-955 is a pretty nice size and 2 of them on the back give you about 3 hours of continuous recording.

Which capacity runs the camera for 1 hour and a half each ?
The range seems to be 2200-7000mAh.

Do we know if other brands are as reliable as the Canons ?
The price range is from 20€ to 250€ here.

the 4900mah ones from Canon. Testing the other brands but the real Canons are for sure the most consistent so far.

Just did the math and came to the same conclusion, that's a big improvement over DSMC2 !
Obviously you're not powering the monitor through these batteries like you do with the Redtouch on DSMC2, but still, I like the sound of that !

Hopefully the boot time got improved too, even though it gets less important if you don't need to power down to change batteries for instance. ;)

Stick an M-RF adapter with the 28mm apoqualia and you are good to go!

But mine already have a lifetime of work on them and I've not been kind to them.
Been a few years since I've checked if they can still hold a charge.
Otherwise, a pair of BP-955 won't hurt.

Careful with the BP-915. Some of the smaller dual cells just don't have enough amps in them.
 
@Jarred - Now that you have a better bead on camera draw and power consumption, can we get Komodo's draw in watts per hour?

And for the curious and the newer blood in the hood this is how I plan and assemble my cinema camera kits big and small for power.

I mainly build my kits around operating for 6, 12, 18, and 24 hour days. (Half Day, Full Day, Long Day, and I'm getting paid a lot day)

i.e. DSMC2 Monstro is about a 60Wh draw, so for a 150Wh battery you get *about* 2.5 hours of camera up time. So typically I have 2, 4, 6, or 8 150Wh batts with me. And if I'm working small I carry the 96Wh in 2X or 4X to get about 6 hours total out of them so I can stay nimble when needed as the batteries are lighter weight. (Super duper GDU plug btw, loving those little bad boys for daily shooting)

I plan on doing the same for Komodo, though all of these batteries are small in my book. But I'll be grabbing smaller and larger batts with the same general mindset. Once I was able to get away from block batteries this general mindset has worked well for me professionally for over a decade.

The Canon BP-975 for instance is a 7.4V 7350mAh battery which comes to 54.39Wh, lets call it 55Wh. I don't think in milliamp because the math is dumber :)

So yeah, question in short, what's Komodo Wh?
 
As Jarred said, this camera will be pushing the capabilities of these little Canon batteries so the larger capacities will be the way forward. The smaller ones may work but the run time will be reduced as the power draw will be too high for them.
 
If my calculations are correct (25W) for the battery mount input, this means that a 98 Wh battery could operate Komodo for almost 4 hours.
Also, this would be true with 7.4V batteries mount imput.
The DC port (which accepts 14.4V batteries) could have a different efficiency caused by another internal voltage management system.
I imagine that for the 7.4V there is a voltages boost circuits and for the DC input probably SEPIC circuit...

hold off on your calculations... we still have a lot of things to turn on in software and every switch we flip takes a bit more juice.
