Here is a quick test of the Kodak 2393 emulation LUT with Epic footage. Shot with the Samyang / Rokinon 85mm T1.5 at 50 - 75fps.

I've kept the grading to a minimum to show/see the effects of the LUT.

If you missed it, you can download the LUT in Resolve format from here: http://juanmelara.com.au/downloads/log2hd_cube_luts.zip The link includes emulations of Fujifilm 3510, Fujifilm 3513, Kodak 2383 and Kodak 2393. Thanks to Bjorn Benckert for the original LUTs.

For instructions on how to use the LUTs check out this post: http://juanmelara.com.au/print-film-emulation-luts-for-download/

If you want to see more examples of the Kodak LUTs check out all my videos on my Vimeo page which have been graded using some form of the Kodak 2393 LUT.

Also, I've been getting a lot of requests for grading tutorials. I'm in the process of shooting footage for them ATM. So if you want to know the moment they're released, follow me on twitter.

Wonderful stuff, Juan. Thanks for the tutorials and downloads!

Nice Juan, Glad to see you like them, personally I can't work without them :)
It would be great to see the same edit with a straight redgamma3 as reference. To me this is like looking ata super rich paper print instead of a color slide.

And to all the guys mumbling about RED and bad skin tones... well, maybe you should try another colorist.. :)

Thanks a lot this is great. I can really see the difference in skin tones. I tried the Kodak 2983. You can see details in the skin tones better. The way the shadows and the highlights roll into each other is smoother and more natural, everything looks more natural. RedGamma3 seems a little bit blotchy and kind of flattens some areas in the skin tones.

Yep, the final color graded one with film grain hits the square you know where (to me, at least). There may be a little bit of noise in the shadows, but I think you can easily intercut this with 35mm footage shot right there at that time.

Don't thank me, thank Bjorn for releasing these! I only spent 15 minutes converting them!

Bjorn: I'm the same, I always use film LUTs when grading. It gets the image to where I want it to be a lot faster than without them. And I find that certain looks are extremely difficult to achieve if I'm not using a film LUT.

And if you're going for the modern feature film look, then using a LUT is a must.

I'll try and get a RC3 / RG3 version up for comparison.

Noel R: I agree. To me these LUTs take off the digital edge - making the image organic. I'd actually forgotten what RC3 / RG3 looked like since its been ages since I actually used it.

Vadim: Any noise you're seeing is my fault. I was using 5 stops of ND, shooting at 1/100 - 1/144th sec in quickly fading light. So a lot of these shots are the equivalent of ISO 1200!

Gotta love the Rokinon 85mm. That rainbow flare that appears when wide open is pure awesome.

how about interior tungsten shots ?
in the past i always found those circumstances being very limiting using film print emulation luts ...

I just did a fuji lut test for you under 3200K. (different lut not the provided ones)

No color grading applied. Fuji print stocks tend to go green in mids and shadows.

Bjorn,

will these LUTS work in SPEEDGRADE or FILMLITE Plugin for AVID?

If they do, where do we add them..... in the timeline layer stack?

THank you!!!

Hi Filip,
Thanks for that
in my past experiences film print luts on Digital Cameras sources create problems on tungsten interior shoots .. can't tell for sure from the low res of your image , but i feel that is happening the same on your end ( the skin in the darker areas looks not nice to me , bit too muddy ) .. i have stop using them a while ago for this reason ...

I actually think that looks quite perfect. Just as film would. If you want to avoid the green darks and mids. You could balance them out before you apply the lut. I usually do that by simply "pick match" in the almost pitch blacks agains a BW version of the same picture. Then it gets really well balanced when the lut is applied. But doing so with low exposure footage naturally makes the noise surface in the starving channels. So instead of fighting that green cast I usually go with it :)
