  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just sharing a job I had fun with last month.

Watched it 8 times. Great subtle details. The music pitch when the shower head streams down, rock sparks, calm narration, perfect music. Love it Mark.

So glad to hear this. I've got only 2 150wHr V-Mounts and 2 RedVolts. It's completely useable, but only because I know my gear and how to gauge the use. Just had a shoot as B Cam where my Scarlet had to go on a very lightweight Jib. "Hey, can you strip yours down to under 8 lbs?" Sure. But there'll be limited battery time. "Ok. Do it."

Off comes the top handle, magic arm, and V-Mount plate and battery. Just a Side Handle, Red Volt, 5.6" LCD, and a Contax Zeiss 35/2.8. On the one hand, it felt a little under-prepared to keep saying to the DP, Hey, 20 minutes left. Hey, 15 minutes left.

On the other hand, given that the Director did not seem to be moving things along that day, it felt pretty OK to have a tangible reason to push and get the shots knocked out.

Really Mark, the more you talk about how you work, the more it sounds like you do all the things that make intuitive sense to me, yet everyone says that the pros "just don't work that way."

Your correct... "THE PRO'S" dont really work this way, most people I know still build there cameras up to huge proportions... But mainly because a lot of DP's want there cameras built this way. They have been working a particular way for many years and it works for them. So why change....

Not sure what you class as a PRO anyways... Most of my projects are over 500k + does that make me a PRO, or a very well paid amateur. ?
At the end of the day, Its best to setup a camera that makes you happy, big small... who really cares.

I'm lucky in a way where I shoot and direct all my own material, I don't have to put a show on or answer to to many people.... All I'm after is results. A big built up camera is not going to get me any better a shot than a little one... A big camera is just going to slow me down is all. A small built camera will let me run around shooting and inventing more shots.

Cheers Rob. :)

I just read that you used a vary ND. Which one? :) and exactly how happy are you with it compared to fixed ND?

I use a Tiffen VND and or a Sighray...
I don't shoot lenses really any wider than 25mm... ( don;t really like the looks of wide lenes, to much distortion for me) 25mm is about the limit of a VND before ugly polarising effect starts to creep in with anything wider.
I never push past 7 stops of ND as I get to much in-fared poisoning.
Other than that, I'm more than happy with using a VND... so long as you work within its parameters.

Not insinuating you're not a Pro. More commenting on the stigmas in clients and agencies around here that I deal with. If they didn't hear your name from 3 contacts in NY or LA and fly you in from out of state, then it's not fit for TV. There are a lot of old school misconceptions that go with that, including the buildup of the camera, the constant connection to video village, etc. As an owner/operator, I'm fine powering up and down my camera as need be. But every agency I know would flip out every time their monitor went blank.

Inspirational as always Mark. You make me happy with my gear and push myself to achieve good results with what I have not waiting for more gear so they do a magic trick for me.

Nevery agency I know would flip out every time their monitor went blank.

Hahhahaaa... I remember those days. Early communication is needed to combat that problem. I tell them in the PPM meetings that there wont be any video split, if you want to see what Im shooting, come stand with me and look over my shoulder, thats if they want to save time and money. They all look at me funny, but come around pretty quickly
