  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim's Last Post - Send him off with some pictures of Red in action.

While not in the same world as most of you guys, I'm in more of the corporate studio shoots.

Got to touch it before the boss did!

When I said I am going to shoot "Modus Anomali" film productions with Epic M which just arrived in Jakarta, everybody was telling me that I am insane. Nobody has tried it before. But since I BELIEVE about Jim's visions, without doubt I beg the Rental House in Jakarta to lend me the camera. They said, nobody has tried it before, and I said, I believe it will be very good. Some colleague just gave me a laugh about this, and then, when they saw the picture on the bigscreen, they dropped their jaw completely. Jim, I am one of the thousands who said THANK YOU SO MUCH for what you've done in this industry.

This is a great idea.

This is a great idea.

A tribute to a great achiever, a great man. Without him all these images wouldn't have been possible because they
would have been made with a DSLR.

Thank you, Jim.

Jim,

At 16 when I fell in love with storytelling I had no idea how to turn it into a career. For 10 years I pushed hard, but the image was never what I believed it could be. I touched an Alexa on a few projects, but most were relegated to EX1 and DSLR shooting...

Until you came along, and gave people like me the opportunity to step up. You and your baby, RED, have given thousands of dreamers and workers just like me the biggest progressive step we could've asked for... and then doubled it.

I can never thank you enough. You have my loyalty. Let me know if you need a couple extra fists.

With Respect.

Nathan

I'm not a pro... but I think it says something that an amateur, within an hour or two of powering up his first Red camera, was able to go outside his hotel and take some nice stills with it (these are the 'goofing around learning the camera' shots I took).

Jim,
I congratulate you! "42" was what I wanted to see "WILT" become. There's always a spot open for you on that! As for your stepping down - enjoy your time time... You've worked tirelessly and you deserve it!!
Hope you do read this at some point in the future and stay in touch.

Best, Ian.

Jim,

Honestly, there are more than enough cameras in the world. I'm sensing you want to do something worthwhile and world changing in a positive way. What we need is clean, non-polluting energy to lift the world's population up and stop destroying the environment. Geothermal heat mining is the way of the future, tapping into the heat stored in the earth's crust. It desperately needs an infusion of investment to get costs down.

Read this MIT report:

The Future of Geothermal Energy
http://geothermal.inel.gov/publications/future_of_geothermal_energy.pdf

“EGS methods have been tested at a number of sites around the world and have been improving steadily.

…In fact, many attributes of geothermal energy, namely its widespread distribution, baseload dispatchability without storage, small footprint, and low emissions, are desirable for reaching a sustainable energy future for the United States.

…Most of the key technical requirements to make EGS work economically over a wide area of the country are in effect, with remaining goals easily within reach.”

I met you and got to talk briefly maybe 3-4 times..

i have had the price lodge to own both a R1MX and an Epic-X, with the beyond generous bonuses you gave those of us who were able to buy into your "hype".... The footage I was able to produce is and was amazing... I wish there was more "hype" in gear we by if this is what that word means.

stay well, enjoy your life, your wife and the fruits of your amazing hard work and the team you brought together.

you provided not only jobs for the 5000 at Oakley, then the large number at Red, but provided opportunities for some of us to expand our craft, and have tools to see on the screen what we had in our minds.

thank you, thank your lovely wife for her patience and the team you developed and nunurtured sincerely,

Scott Miller

I belong to the cohort of also-rans who covets but does not own any one of the RED camera family. I was enlivened and excited when the first posts by the "madman" turned up on dvinfo.net so soon after the SI2K got under way on the same forum.

I even got to see several of my own wish-list suggestions make the cut though to be honest they were nearly all repeated many times over. So being a SI2K owner-driver and perhaps certifiable fifth columnist who has thus far been given friendly courtesy on this forum I need to say that credit is due where credit is due.

Now comes the navel-gaze by proxy. It is easy to criticise from the outside of course.

The problem/bug thread is probably the most popularly visited on this forum. Competing entities likely get a bit of a scheidenfreude kick out of seeing things unravel and receive a public airing. They are not without their own problems. It would be interesting to know the comparative ratios across brands, of breakdowns versus troublefree ops., then apply a cost-benefit value taking into account initial investment and maintenance.

Likely to be never stated by Mr. Jannard himself is that perhaps some of the more aggressive complaints and sense-of-entitlement feedbacks from within the ranks on this forum might have been as hurtful as any barbs from competing corporate entities or commentators in the industry.

If he has perceived or felt the sting, he has had the good grace to keep it to himself so far as I have observed.

I guess it's the way of the web and the future? -

Another enthusiastic start-up, Cineform came in for its share of venom and face-biting when things went wrong as they will with the diversity of hardware upgrades, software versions and operating systems they have to deal with.

I must confess to going a bit ballistic with Adobe myself over the Premiere Pro MainConcept exporter with my "what goes in Adobe stays in Adobe" barb.

Those older of us with a few sparks still going across our widening synapses will remember JVC and the "split screen" issue on their then revolutionary GY-HD100.

Many years ago in Perth, Western Australia, there was a popular radio personality named John Juan. His contract was extended well beyond his retirement age because of listener support. Eventually he was moved to comment to listeners that they needed to let him go ( my paraphrase ) to have well-earned rest.

Mr. Jannard has said up front, he is tired. Who wouldn't be? Unlike some others at the top of their respective heaps, he seems to have embraced the idea of a succession plan and put it into play before being compelled into hasty regime change by urgent circumstance to disruptive effect. I think that is also where respect is due.

And Mr. Jannard, if you are listening, maybe try North Western Australia and the Kimberly as a grey-nomad holiday destination, to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace during your northern summers. Who knows. You may see a RED cam and a crew on Cable Beach BROOME, stroll by and comment, that's a nice camera you have there - what is it? So why a SI2K afficianado making such comments. - Why not. Here's an image of another SI2K doter sneakily having a dalliance with the RED Epic owned and operated in Western Australia by Sam Winzar. The project was a short feature, a sweet little story titled "Revive". I don't have the knowing of how to make an image become part of the text body, so the postage stamp shall have to suffice.

A Great Ride ...... I'm still going strong!

A Great Ride ...... I'm still going strong!

Well Jim,

It's been an amazing ride for me. Thank you! Back in the day of BMX racing, I was all about Oakley grips. The Oakley 3's ..... not my favorite, but I knew you made an incredible product! Flash forward a few years and the Oakley glasses were huge for me. I can't tell you the number of times Oakley's saved my eyes and even saved me from a broken nose due to a bad hop baseball! Still have the scars from the glasses digging into my face but they saved me! Again what an incredible product. Flash forward again ...... 2006 ..... I was at NAB and went to visit a buddy at this new company called RED. "Jim Jannard the Oakley guy started this?" At the time I didn't have the expendable cash to drop the deposit, but talking to everyone and seeing what was in the "back room" I was sold. I had to figure out how to do it. I knew this would be a game changer for not only me, but the industry. Thanks to some persuasion I was able to convince my wife that we NEEDED this camera. BOOM! As an early adopter you and RED were more than generous with what you gave us. The RED One was a game changer as everyone knows. It changed my life forever. And now the EPIC! You couldn't have chosen a better name. So once again an Incredible product. My cameras have been on beaches, planes, helicopters, in restaurants, hospitals, malls and everywhere in between. My cameras have worked on music videos, national commercials, local commercials, infomercials and tons of other fun stuff. So thank you for all of that! Also the staff you have put into place are top notch too. My BS Reps have all been great and the customer service of RED has been impeccable. As far as I can see, you are 3 for 3. Grips, Glasses and Cameras. Take your rest as it is well deserved my friend! I hope to run into you again soon just to shake your hand and thank you in person!

Jim,

Thank you for all of your hard work with Red. As many on here have already said, your creation changed my life and FINALLY got me working in the profession I've always loved. Like many others, I will always appreciate the mark you have left on filmmaking and the immensely positive effect that it has had on my life personally. I hope that you can now find the time to kick your feet up and enjoy the fruits of your labor with your loved ones!

Cheers,
Omar Saad

Jim,
I first heard about the red one in college and it was such a distant fantasy. The day I got my Epic-m for my film was such an amazing day. It's taken me to such amazing places around the world and allowed me to capture the scenes in the highest quality. I am forever grateful. Enjoy Fiji knowing that Red is in the hands of all around badass Jarred.

I've been in the background of many events held at RED Studios the past 4 years or so, but like to keep a low profile. But everyone, especially Jim has seemed extremely approachable and chill. Really, can't say enough great things about RED and what they've allowed for me to accomplish. After many ups and downs with selling scripts, my writing partner and I started our own production company, Burning Shade Productions. We've produced four short films in just under six months.

Here are some shots from three short films I wrote, directed, shot, edited early this year. One of which, "Botch", is now featured on ODEMAX and I couldn't be more proud.

Right now, we are prepping two features that will be shot on our incoming Dragon. I love creating and RED allows me to do that. I am beyond ecstatic for the future.

Cheers!
