  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good Luck guys, I'm sorry to hear that.

Seriously? Without hearing Arri's side of the story? Why don't we all give pause to these unfolding events and let the court systems provide us with more information and maybe a verdict down the road. Arri as a company should be considered innocent until proven guilty. Brevin is guilty, he admitted it, but we don't know Arri's involvement in all this yet.

Already for sale Timur... HERE... When I say something I mean it!!

Cookes are great glass but never liked their look and fill, also they do not cover 5k sadly in off... So I think that it will be Leica Cine glass.

"Homies?" "REAL good time?" You are not a well person. And neiether is anyone on this forum that finds that acceptable.

Dude how much time have you spent in jail?

I help a lot of people out and I have helped turn around a lot people’s lives who have done time.
The reality is, if you do time you going need to deal with a Lot of nasty people that ARE going to mess with you. I don’t know what kind of jails you have were you come from, but I tell you if you are put in the “klink” in New Mexico you are most definitely going to be get messed with.

In Japan Patent infringement is a federal offense, and you can do serious jail time.

I for one have no sympathy for someone who steals information and IP. We have a smaller company that does have significant IP and patents and the LAW is the only leverage we have over larger more unscrupulous companies that would otherwise have the ability to squash us like a bug.

THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD TODAY.

China for example does not have a system of law that makes IP tenable to any useful degree. I find it a huge double standard that the kids that I have helped that have gotten into trouble that have for example stolen cars, got in trouble with drugs and so on…should be treated any differently from any other criminal that aims to steal or put another entity at considerable risk. This is a massive double standard and those that deliberately steal from others in the guise of white collar crime, should be made an example of.

If these guys actually knew what it is like to spend time in a real jail, then maybe they would think twice before stealing someone else’s BEST WORK that they have put their heart soul, and lively hood into.

If someone willfully steals my IP we throw book at them, as that directly affects the people that are the closest to me. They deserve everything they get. Zero sympathy …sorry this seems as if this comes from an “unwell person”. I know where I stand on this.

I think people on the whole have very little idea how many millions of hours (and dollars) and blood sweat and tears it takes to develop absolutely game changing technology, just to have some unscrupulous wanker steal it from you without recourse.

All I can say is that at least nobody died.

A little bit too much reaction without knowing the whole story around here tho.

Might be wise to take things a little easy until the whole thing is clear

And, pray tell, WTF does this have to do with justice and the situation at hand? Jim and RED, it appears, have been wronged and are pursuing their remedies legally and forcefully. From all we can tell so far, they deserve to have their day in court and to see any wrongs righted, to the degree that this is possible. It is extremely unfortunate for Jim, personally, that he has to endure this. But, he is a strong and capable man and he will see this to its successful end. Hopefully, the legal system will succeed in this matter as well.

But really, advocating abuse in a system that is designed, at least in theory, to punish people in a humane manner? Punishment may be in order, but degrading someone as a human being is certainly not.

A guy broke into another guys email. In your version of Reduserland that is justification for a racist slur and wishing gang rape on another person. That's the position you have taken. But hey, I know facts aren't always welcome here.

I think I'm just gonna chime in once about this, and leave it at that and concentrate on other things. This is just way too big of a deal, and I know what Jim means when he says this is heart breaking. Arri is a major piece of the backbone of this entire industry. and i'm not taking sides, there is still a lot of info yet to be released. But, even when compared to RED, respectfully, nobody does or did it like Arri. They provided camera support gear, lenses, lights, even support teams, they were all this and a camera company. they were the one stop shop for all your needs. To say you're gonna boycott Arri, is mute. They make the best lights, they make some of the best lenses, they make a lot of things, that people rely on day in and day out to get through their show with ease and comfort.

if this escalates to the point where RED and I'm thinking band pro to, sues Arri to the point where they can be no more, seriously, it's a huge black hole to fill in. Yes the existing product will still be out there and I"m sure people can repair and replace up to a certain extent. But honestly I have a hard time seeing a industry without Arri in it. Even if they can stay on the ups financially after this is over, which will probably take a long time before it's over, their name is tarnished. and maybe a name only goes so far, and people can just not think of the company and just go for the product. But this is a painful shape in events, and it's easy to just say, they screwed up, they deserve everything that's coming to them. But the consequences are gonna effect the industry as a whole.

Maybe i'm over thinking it, but I personally feel like this goes way beyond, they screwed up, they are getting sued, and justice is served. Once "justice" is served, than what? who really wins at the end of all this?

condemning a forum for one posters actions... once again attacking the attacker gets us nowhere, not advocating what he said but highlighting it isn't going to make it any better.

the reality is there are many types of prison's I doubt Michael would be put in general population, but this is all speculation that none of us should take part in. Just as none of us should condemn a man from the little facts we have, though he was wrong and has admitted it, it's not an open door to attack him. A crime is a crime and personal privacy is a very important thing, so lets try and and respect Mr Bravin's despite his actions.

To address Gavin to be honest you seem to be going on just the Bravin stuff as Jim is hinting it's much more than that. We should all wait until the facts are out until we start making harsh or rash statements.

To be honest it's none of our business but at the same time very involved with many of our businesses so it's understandable how passionate people have become.

We all need to step back show our support or not, and let the lawyers do their work and wait and see where the chips fall.

"Once "justice" is served, than what? who really wins at the end of all this? "
Unfortunately no one does and that's why this is such an unfortunate situation.

Play nice, and a have a successful and productive week!

Rule number one: Don't write anything incriminating or sensible company information on your e-mail account. We all know how vulnerable e-mail accounts are. Anybody with decent hacking abilities can break into them at the count of three. Also this dude did not hack the email account he STOLE the code and the password from the very person he worked for. Given time and half a brain anybody can do this from his boss. As for Mr. Jannard's situation who knows what really transpired. Time will likely tell.

Disrespectful posts will not be tolerated.

To address Gavin to be honest you seem to be going on just the Bravin stuff as Jim is hinting it's much more than that.

Well, so far all we have to go on is the Bravin stuff. I've seen no charges filed or even specific accusations leveled by anyone beyond what Michael Bravin has already pleaded guilty to. Until someone actually makes a specific claim that's all any of us have to go on. Perhaps Jim's lawyers discovered that Arri has a bunch of back parking tickets. Maybe Arri stole Jim's dog. At this point we just don't know anything. ;)

As you say I would prefer to reserve judgment or worse invent accusations against someone that could be even more damaging to their reputation and character.

"Once "justice" is served, than what? who really wins at the end of all this? "
Unfortunately no one does and that's why this is such an unfortunate situation.

Agreed. It's naive, but the best case scenario in all of this isn't that Michael Bravin and Arri are found guilty, it's that they're found innocent and that RED wasn't wronged. I would rather prosecute someone and find out in the course of the case that nothing was stolen from me than to get justice for a wrong done against me. If something was taken, I hope RED finds justice--but more so I hope nothing was taken.

Who says Arri is necessarily responsible for the breakins or theft? There are other large competitors that might resort to such ruthless behaviour, and potential foreign startups that might get a large step up from this, especially through state sponsored industrial espinonarge. So if this is somebody else, keep an eye out for similar advancements on low level technologies, features and or timing in large competitors (they can afford to do everything at an affordable price already) and sudden dramatic advances and in price, of smaller competitors.

I agree with you Jim, the world is no more what we want it to be, values you hold true are scoffed at by others.
Amazingly being a nice guy means you can be had, and will not do anything about it.

I've been taken for a ride a few times, on matters a lot bigger than this. All I can say is: That's what they think, it is not necessarily so.

For the most sensitive stuff we work with we have computer systems that are NOT connected to ANY network. It’s a pain in the arse as the computer industry says you MUST be connected to a network for constant updates and all kinds of stupid BS. I say otherwise and wish the software/OS industries would take the need for security more seriously.

I have to admit, the “terminal”/computer I use for day to day rubbish over the past three weeks seems like there have been attempts to poke around on my system… or am I just being paranoid and this is a completely random occurrence? It’s unfortunate that e-mail is a necessary form of communication and that it seems rather vulnerable somehow, encrypted or otherwise...

Very Best,

Eric

Once again we agree. This stupid online culture makes it extremely difficult to keep your computer offline, even Microsoft is moving to online stores, how much longer before your software is online downloadable only, along with what ever else hackers can download while connected to root kit your system. By far the biggest problem is governments have been known to monitor communications and hand strategic information to their own nations companies. Also operating systems software has had government requested backdoors installed in times past to tap into 'criminal' activity. Put those two together with hackers, and foreign government hackers at that, gaining access to the same back door, you have a major issue.

As far as your system getting hacked, as a person of commercial interest, as well as interesting to hackers I. general, that is very possible once they realise you are there. If you are online through a set IP address, or If you have any embeded content or programs that check back when connected, cookies, or just checking emails that have embedded content or receipt back, your IP address is trackable for further hacking attempts. The cookies from embedded advertisements or other on pages can be used to track your movements. This why it is important to have laws to severely limit these things, so at least you have to be a criminal to achieve them.

There is a lot of normal private hack of opportunity attempts, it maybe just that, but as a commercial firm you are open to commercial attacks, particularly from certain countries and sponsored by business and or government.

So you are wise to stay off line. Computer operating systems companies, software companies in general, and government law, should have it organised so you can at least download all your updates from a central OS service like Windows update, to a physical disc and take it to an offline machine to update it. Simple proceadure, get offline machine to make or extend current software status file, disc to online machine and it uses it to download all relevant updates and updates status file. Then take disc to offline machine and it updates it's software and completes the update of the status file for next time. Simple three step procedure that can involve a very simple home gateway terminal.

On reverse engineering, just to prove a competitor has a product from reverse engineering your product, you may have to reverse engineer theirs to find out So the law is ridiculous. Laws against reverse engineering are anti-competitive by nature. As long as they are not copying your actual (and I know these are tricky terms to define exactly) copyrightable layout or patentable innovations (where ideas belong) and it is no longer locked away in your hands (as with all true trade secrets), owned by another, accessible to the public, or unused in trade for a long period of time, it should be made OK under law. Stealing prototypes to reverse engineer them is an entirely different thing, then you are actually breaking trade secrets before they get out of the owners hands to market, maybe even before patents are able to be granted.

A guy broke into another guys email. In your version of Reduserland that is justification for a racist slur and wishing gang rape on another person. That's the position you have taken. But hey, I know facts aren't always welcome here.

Just one thing, I don’t speak for RED AND I am not acting as a rabid fan boy O.K..I speak for myself ONLY.

The use of the word Homies is NOT a racist slur (unless you value drug culture), but if you are offended by that I am sincerely sorry.

I can’t believe I’m referencing wikkipedia for Homies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homies

If you think that my use of the word of Homies (even though it’s on a million products you can buy and thousands of rap songs, etc. and shall we say friends and people I help out at the thin end of society also use it.

From the wiki page: …The figures caused controversy after their initial release as members of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), argued that the figures glorified gang life. Many stores stopped selling the toys after the LAPD complained. Gonzales then created a story for each of the Homies' characters, each of which had a positive view of the characters. Some of them became former jailmates who went on to educate children about how to avoid jail. Mainstream stores, such as Walmart, quickly returned the Homies to their stocks, and the toy branched out to include a line of die cast cars, among other things.

So it looks like you are also going to have sue Wallmart for the use of the word ‘Homies”
Also read the specific etymology of the word “homie” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homie.

Secondly I did not state specifically the gentleman concerned should be sexually interfered with. You DID… not me… So that reflects basically YOUR thinking NOT MINE. I said.. real good time.. which can go from being made to feel uncomfortable, to very uncomfortable or being physically (not sexually) roughed up; (of the people I have worked with that have come out of prison to be re-habilitated that is one of the most likely scenarios). The idea of “gang rape" came entirely from YOUR own mind, not mine…). Just so we are clear on that.

However people should never the less realize that prison is not a freaking pick nick, and you do get rouged up. Prison is not intended to be an introspective time where you get to catch up on your more esoteric reading that you have been putting off all this time....and have substantial funds wired to anonymous Swiss bank account while you are "taking one for the team".

In the interests of focused and useful dialog I will formerly retract the following statement

and I hope the “homies” in Jail show him a REAL good time, for his two month “stay”.

I will substitute it with “I hope that his fellow inmates show him the same regard as he has shown to others.” OK?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So getting back to the point (I apologize for causing trouble)… MY BAD…(really I take full responsibility for that, and that has nothing whatsover to do with RED or RED forum).

The only reason to hack someone is to steal information. Full stop.

If you read the later posts, I was one of the earlier posters to question the whole validity of the idea that ARRI (Munich) is culpable in any way.

I at this point (and much earlier) in time find it VERY hard to believe that for example ARRI Munich IS directly responsible.

The things that I am railing against is Not the fact that RED IP has been stolen (which is bad enough) I am railing against the fact that nobody seems to care in the least that it is OK to steal the very best work of other people and organizations, and that it is OK to steal IP and knowhow that was very hard won. That is what I stand for, that principal.

I know in this day and age people don’t stand for anything anymore. IP theft IS very damaging. Unless you have taken considerable personal risk to build a tech based business that does rely on trade secrets and IP then I really don’t think that you have any idea how serious such a crime can be.

It is very clear (from studying similar cases), and from company owners that I know that have also had valuable IP stolen, that what has been presented thus far is only the very tip of the ice burg.

Right now in global business this is a massive problem.

I wish Jim were here...

When he says "Helmets on" he is not kidding

Peace Out,

Eric

If people are still unclear on the seriousness of IP theft, then they should go to and read on the FBI’s website as to how they regard “Economic Espionage” as second only to threats from terrorism.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/counterintelligence/economic-espionage

In other words corporate espionage from foreign entities is classified as a federal offense.

In fact there was passed in 1996 “The Economic Espionage Act (EEA) of 1996”.

This is an excerpt from the FBI’s site.

Economic Espionage

Introduction

The Cold War is not over, it has merely moved into a new arena: the global marketplace. The FBI estimates that every year billions of U.S. dollars are lost to foreign and domestic competitors who deliberately target economic intelligence in flourishing U.S. industries and technologies, and who cull intelligence out of shelved technologies by exploiting open source information and company trade secrets. Foreign competitors who criminally seek economic intelligence generally operate in three ways:

1. They aggressively target and recruit insiders (often from the same national background) working for U.S. companies and research institutions;

2. They conduct economic intelligence through operations like bribery, cyber intrusions, theft, dumpster diving (in search of discarded intellectual property or prototypes), and wiretapping; and,

3. They establish seemingly innocent business relationships between foreign companies and U.S. industries to gather economic intelligence, including trade secrets.

In an effort to safeguard our nation's economic secrets, the Economic Espionage Act (EEA) was signed into law on October 11, 1996.

So US nationals should understand that if they steal trade secrets from a US company to benefit foreign entities then they can conceivably be tried in a Federal court.

If Jim is going to throw the book at these guys I would not like to be in their shoes right now…

Go to the FBI website check it out.

Cheers,

Eric

I have to admit these past few weeks ago I was much more moderate in my thinking, and now that things are going from push to shove, I now think I understand where Jim is coming from these days. Time to wake up…

I know I cannot really ask for details, but looking back somethings make sense. The "philosophy" change, RED knew something was not right. I am glad you caught one leak, are there anymore? I do not know what competitors triggered the changes at RED, but are they involved? (I am not asking for an answer, just a thought out loud.) I say crush them in court, AND on the market. Make it so that others will reevaluate the risk/reward equation when doing something dirty like this.

Anyways, for the little fish I am, RED has my support.
