I'm obviously way out of my league to give any sort of comment on this, but I share it anyway: fight for what you believe in, but never let negativity and negative energy be your driving force. Look at all the positive energy people over here send to you and your team. We are here for the long haul. This legal battle needs to be fought, but hold on to the positive side of Red accomplishments: even if Arri does come out with copied products and plans, what you've achieved with your costumer base as well as the potential Scarlet and future buyers is brand loyalty with your commitment to them. You have an incredible team, like someone else said, of true mavericks and talented people that share a passion together with you. This we can "feel" on this side of the internet. You may lose probably a couple of those high end costumers, but these were never "your" target costumers anyway. Peter Jackson, Sodeberg, and the whole reduser community are sure to be with you and look forward to what you guys do today and in the future.

Go fight the fight, but don't let it consume you, Red Team. You've achieved something those guys never will. think about that!
And IMHO Jarred (and his dvxuser :-)

...was (has been ;) one of main keys.

Words of wisdom from a portuguese pal I can also be proud to have met in real life too. Well said, Sérgio!

Um abraço de Nápoles para Macau,

E :-))

Jim...

this case might only prove one thing we all have been feeling for a while here on reduser...
The "big guys" are pissing their pants and running random "strategies" to save what they can until it's too late, with no real plan to give a descent fight back.
If for two years they have been spying on you to anticipate Red bullets trajectory, i definitely can't imagine how sad/angry you must be feeling. It's a pity you'll have to lose time and energy in such a fight, but you can count on this community to support you all along the way, and beyond.

I'm not one of the most active user here. I'm not a fanboy and always complain whenever i feel i need to. Though, i'm deeply attached to Red philosophy as I was with Aaton people a few years back, for their relationship with customers, and philisophy behind products. You know that already, but you're going the right way. And people must know that too.

Yannick, future scarlet/epic user.

THIS IS SERIOUS!!!

I believe that what is in stake is the very survival of RED. Jim Jannard should listen to his gut feeling. The guy quit ARRI to start his own "consulting" company.

This guy is definitely selling info. Possibly to companies like Sony, JVC, Canon and any one whiling to pay for it. Look how many big players had come out with 4K solutions at the same time. He certainly had clientele.

One thing that nobody talk about is the fact that someone denounced him first for the prosecutors to get him. What I think might have happened is that he became greedy and decided to sell too high and someone did not want to pay for it or someone got tired of it. Maybe even someone inside ARRI.

If Mr. Jannard can prove that all or some of those companies gained something by illegally buying info from this guy it will be a game changing moment in favor of RED.

But to win the bigger fight, Jim Jannard not only need to smash this guy and squeeze every drop of truth from him, but at the same time find a way to increase the production of the EPIC and Scarlet and deliver it sooner and in bigger quantities. Not only that he should find ways to make it cheaper.

RED is a small and young company that is being targeted by giants. For big corporations industrial espionage is not only normal is the CULTURE.

THIS IS WAR FOLKS! BIGGER FIGHTS ARE APPROACHING!

It will only get worse. Take Apple for example, so many ups and downs, from almost complete obliteration to become the largest corporation in the world. This is a game to be played strong.

In general, I think our litigious society is totally out of control. But whatever ARRI and Bravin have done must be major or Jim would not be diverting his FULL attention from what he loves in order to descend into the mudpit of legal battle. Jim seems to me like the maverick genius in a garage who, instead of selling his ideas out of economic need or having them stolen by companies too big to fight, has assembled the human and financial resources to make his dreams come true and thrive. I always root for the "little guy," and while Jim and RED are certainly not little, that's who they represent in this battle. Ganbare yo!

Well, as much as corporate espionage makes me sick, I love the smell of napalm in the morning!
RED sue the hell out of them! :-)

Sorry. You can thank Arri that my full time job is now dealing with Michael Bravin and Arri. Nothing else.

Jim

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

So this was actually what was behind that FBI showing up at Arri some time ago?

Jim and Jarred...you and the RED team have created something incredible, that in 5 short years completely upset the status quo of an industry. You need to draw strength from that achievement, and from the army of loyal RED owners and supporters everywhere as you head into this battle that you never wanted.

Maybe a bazooka isn't enough for this fight...has RED developed any PREDator drones??

These are strange times and any action that attempts to shore up integrity in business and politics is an important one. All the best, Jim.

Jim & RED, thanks for fighting so hard. I'm sure all the thanks that everyone has on this board will never be seen, but I sure as hell hope it's felt.

Maybe I've missed some vital information. I've just skimmed the information that I came across.
Is the Arri involvement a confirmed fact or speculation? Up until this post I thought this was a one man operation.

Red has suffered several events over the years that could well be related to industrial espionage: the break in at Lake Forest, the theft of Epic-M 006, and now this. Could be unrelated, could be coincidence, or not.

Small innovative companies with disruptive technologies can become targets of extremely ruthless behavior by large established competitors with market positions to protect. That is an unfortunate reality that stifles innovation and competition in many fields.

No one without evidences or inside information can add anything really useful into the case.

Something is fact though. If Jim Jannard comes here to say he will fight man and company with Jarred to talk about lawsuits, sad to know but for some reason it should be, isn't it? ;-)

In the quality of jurisconsult too, I'd just recommend some control on it.

This is a public forum and everything said or written here can be used backwards as well.

My father, lawyer in business for more than 45 years, is used to say... what we can legally do, the others can do as much as us, if we give to them the reasons for at least.

So, to be cautious is always mandatory and really good/friendly advice (and REDusers crowd should be calm as much as we all do at our best :)

Just my humble 0.2 cents of euro,

E :-)

My sincere desire is that Jim and Jarred delegate someone else to pursue the legal wranglings full time and that TRUSTED person
allows JIM to focus his energy on the positive aspects of life, both personal and business (Red).

Time and energy lost looking backwards to past events in litigation is a Vampire to creativity and productivity.

Jim should be truly flattered he has something worth stealing, reassess security going forward, use this tragedy
to further elevate his team, and let the legal dogs do the fighting...

Jim and the Red Team have the special ingredient 99% of all other companies are missing- truly, I wish you had public stock!
Keep your eyes on the goal and best wishes for everyone there to KNOW they are making positive impacts on thousands of lives
others have said would be impossible in the USA right now.

I am celebrating Red's achievements in the midst of these events with some nice wine,...

CHEERS RED TEAM!

Anything that’s Legal and TECHNICAL is at best a total car crash.

We have been successful in prosecuting our “little” patents but I absolutely dread the day when we have to eventually drag someone into court; War chest or no War chest I hope we NEVER have to do this.

If you care about what you do, then you don’t or can’t leave it 100% to the layers, as they don’t see all of the relevant combinations of technical and legal arguments. Even with the best layers on the planet, if you leave them on their own without full input they will screw it up. So necessarily Jim’s life is made an absolute misery.

It’s a shame that they can’t make Brevin squirm more in the dock, and I hope the “homies” in Jail show him a REAL good time, for his two month “stay”.

The real Mo is that if there is trade secret “leak”, that is really hard to mop up. Hopefully it is possible to make the case that the use of such know how is as the result of illegally acquired information. However there are not many good legal precedents to protect one in this type of situation. Probably the most famous is how Compaq reverse engineered the BIOS chip developed by IBM, and gave birth to clone PCs (without legal recourse). The problem with some good ideas, is that they seem obvious once you get it, and after that how do you “un-ring” a bell…

For the most sensitive stuff we work with we have computer systems that are NOT connected to ANY network. It’s a pain in the arse as the computer industry says you MUST be connected to a network for constant updates and all kinds of stupid BS. I say otherwise and wish the software/OS industries would take the need for security more seriously.

I have to admit, the “terminal”/computer I use for day to day rubbish over the past three weeks seems like there have been attempts to poke around on my system… or am I just being paranoid and this is a completely random occurrence? It’s unfortunate that e-mail is a necessary form of communication and that it seems rather vulnerable somehow, encrypted or otherwise.

The biggest imaginary nightmare I have is getting into law suit one day with SONY. The problem is that you can never escape those four letter S…O..N…Y, it’s on just about everything everywhere you go; you’d have to buy a desert island that is SONY free, just so your blood doesn’t boil everywhere and anywhere you go. Hopefully we see R…E…D on everything too in the not too distant future.

Well.. Jim…DON’T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN! We understand what you have to do... it’s a shitty “corporate” reality.

Very Best,

Eric
