  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Deserves Better

I agree with the general gist of your post, however, I don't personally afford billionaires more respect than I do the average guy on the street -- everyone should be treated with respect.

You're right that the low selling price of the original Red One sort of inflamed certain class prejudices in the film industry.

I respect Jim, very much, but not just because he is a billionaire. This (occasional) american tendency to venerate wealth above all else, as though nothing else mattered is confusing to many people from other countries.

I can call a billionaire a scammer all I want - a large number of billionaires come from Wall Street, and got their billions through outright fraud. People who run drug cartels are billionaires. Being a billionaire doesn't mean much, in itself. You can be a good one or a bad one. I also think when you make a lot of provocative and unconventional statements, some people won't like you, others will adore you. That's life, that's how it's always been, and that's how it was for Jim. I don't get why he's even surprised. It's not a bad thing really, kind of the price you have to pay, a price worth paying in the end.

Like me, he's probably never going to stick with one brand of anything for the rest of his life, there's no brand loyalty that all companies love and strive for (especially Red), he will go to whoever delivers what he needs at the time. But unlike me, Geoff is a strong personality who spends less time worrying about being politically correct, just like Jim Jannard. The world belongs to people like them.

I do not know Geoff or Jim personally.
But I have had a bit of good-times, bad-times with both on the fora.
AND I have come to respect them both for a multitude of reasons.

I know this is probably not a good way to get me a Dragon to shoot some cool stuff, but sometimes I wish that even great people could let bygones be bygones. :)

I certainly cannot take the implied heat of publicly see what I see, so I just advice and show those who ask me.
It takes too much of my energy on subjects that really interest me a lot less than making stuff up. :)

But I hafta say that i appreachiate this comment beyond a lot.

I am pretty agnostic, but shoot RED.

Let me choose a word I used, for you and offer my defense of its use.

Calumny... I could have used the word lie, as in liar, instead. But saying someone is lying or is a liar opens the possibility of a certain pathological tendency to lie.

On the other hand, by using the one word, calumny, I am specifically saying that I think untruths are being spread for the purpose of discrediting by making false statements maliciously. Calumny is actually the softer of the two words in that it denotes lying for a purpose, rather than the word lie, which connotes a pathological trait.

It's a damn shame a thread like this even needs to exist, but I guess that's just the optimistic and naive side of me talking. As creative types we ALL can get emotional and even personal when it comes to the differing of opinions, philosophies and techniques, but when you tie that right along with professional reputation, and business on a personal and global level, it will get downright dirty. In a nutshell, it comes down to perception, money and control (power). As a shooter who owns Red cameras, I find it odd that I feel the need, on occasion to "defend" the use of my camera. That notion almost sounds ridiculous if it were not for the hordes of anti-red folks who try in earnest to bash it at every turn. As individual owner operators, we are perceived as a direct threat to the livelihood of all those who are either uncertain and frightened of the future, or downright combative folks (the competition) that want discredit Red so they can "perceptually control" the industry and reap all the rewards. But history always proves unkind to those that do not change with the world, ironically it's also unkind to all those that change it.

I may not know Mr Jannard personally, but from reading all his words throughout these formative years, he is many things to us, an inventor, a visionary, a businessman, camera enthusiast of UBER proportions, an artist, a friend. . . but one thing he is not is a victim. Red has opened the doors to a historically closed industry, hermetically sealed to most through pricing, hiring practices, business models, distribution channels etc. But being on the front lines in this cinematic revolution has also made him another thing: a target. A target of the "old" establishment, a target of competing interests, and this is the saddest one, a target of lesser folks who just want to make a name for themselves by trying to "out-opinion" a person of merit. It kind of reminds me of the plot to all those wonderfully horrid Kung-fu flicks we watched growing up, where one school of a particular style tries to best the competing school by "killing their master". Sad . . . or hysterically funny, when our lives parallels that of a Wu Xia flick. LOL

At this point, to me it seems Mr Jannard is doing the classy thing; he and his team worked their collective butts off (understatement of the year) to give to us some of the best digital cinema tools around and now with Dragon, it's time to let the tools speak for themselves. You can try to silence a man but you cannot silence his legacy, and add to that all of our collective work to follow, the Dragon will have a mighty roar indeed.

Those were in another thread and there is no other single word that I know of that describes either condition. I'm sorry Tony... I cannot bring my conversation down to your level of understanding when dealing with terms like these. Respectfully, consider raising your level so you are comfortable with these words?

Journalism, but only because it didn't require a lot of math. '-)

No degree. I did the time (4 years off and on) but didn't put out the effort.

EDIT: Oh wait! I think I did get a Liberal Arts degree from my local Community College. Didn't participate in the pomp and circumstance of a graduation, but I received a diploma. Not sure if I still have it.

I have only met you a couple times in passing but I can say that, despite being only a couple years younger than you, you are one of my heroes. Because of you, I still have great ambition in my life and a continuing desire to do something great. A man has to dream. You are an inspiration to people, young and old.

Down to my level??? Come on Elsie when you have to hide behind words with extra long definitions that no one uses, to insult them on a higher level it really explains your level of education. So keep searching the net and writing down your words to act intelligent but remember ..no one likes a smart ass.
