Sometimes in life, people deserve better than they get. Jim Jannard has a lot. He worked for all of it. But there are people who are crass and stupid enough to deny him the immense respect he deserves. These are small minded people. These are critics who will never accomplish the kind of things he has. He deserves their respect. When he doesn't get it, it is their own stupidity showing. I wish he didn't take it to heart as he does, but accomplished men are also some times men with the biggest hearts. And hearts can hurt.

Jim, stay well and stay strong, even as you deny your critics the opportunity to pick at you. Sadly, it is those who have huge respect for you that will miss your presence. I have only met you a couple times in passing but I can say that, despite being only a couple years younger than you, you are one of my heroes. Because of you, I still have great ambition in my life and a continuing desire to do something great. A man has to dream. You are an inspiration to people, young and old.

Peace and love.

Jim

I saw your 'I'm tired' post and was typing a reply to wish you well for the future when the thread disappeared.

An old pig Latin phrase springs to mind "Noli illegitimum carborundum" - roughly translated as 'don't let the bastards grind you down'.

Enjoy your well-earned retirement - that is if you can stay retired. :-)

6 months ago I went looking for a portable high end imaging/video package for my (non cinema - scientific imaging) work. I surveyed the cinema market and chose the system I felt had the best value prop. (high quality, reasonable cost, long expected asset life). I chose Epic... not Sony, not Arri. I had no notion of the politics of big budget production equipment, I simply went with the platform that I felt gave me the best package - and I couldn't be happier. As I've learned more about Red it's become obvious that there are a few folks who have driven that vision, and while I've not met you I've benefitted from your work in many ways... from a great system (design, engineering, software, workflow) to a great customer experience... thanks.

It's sad there are so many naysayers around who tend to also be the loudest shouters unfortunately.

Jim deserves to have a less stressful life, and he'll still be involved behind the scenes.

While I'll miss his posts, I'm certain that Red will keep pushing and improving.

Thanks and Best wishes for a more laid back, relaxing life Jim!!

Even so this Thread is in the wrong section of this Forum...

As I wrote on Jim Last Post thread... He tossed the "RING in to the FIRE", He has achieved and beyond what He had set pout to do, yet we are SAD to see him leave this community Forum, but completely understand him, I gone thru a similar tough because of the few that post disrespectfully... But changed my mind and staying strong...

But I understand how it becomes more and more difficult to deal with all else were they take his posts here and repeat them in other forums and trash every word of it... On can only take so much of it...

Jim will be missed here, and we can only give THANKS for his achievements with which we are today doing what we are doing... Any other camera would have done the job, but never the same.

I've sat quietly in the corner of the Red forums for quite some time, absorbing from those who know more than myself. And it's a shame that I felt inclined to come out of hiding on this topic... but as it stands, I have to comment.

What is clear is that when passion is met with subjective cynicism (unfounded or not), it's hard for anyone not to take it personally... Especially when someone has given years of their life to a project. Innovators and filmmakers share in this. And it's a shame that Mr. Jannard has let it get the best of him.

I was introduced to the Red while working on The Social Network. It became abundantly clear from the beginning that in order to put myself in the same realm as some of the world's best- I should invest in the best. Since then, I've sunk every dime, and maxed out a credit card or two to get the Red Epic-- and now the Dragon.

Has it been worth it?

As a small independent filmmaker, Red has given me a tool that has made all the difference-- that makes me feel like a giant. So, as succinctly as I can put it and as loudly as I can say it:
Jim Jannard, I don't know you… but I owe you, immensely. Your passion is what allows filmmakers, from the ground up, to live beyond their dreams. I'm pumped for my Red Dragon. I'm excited to start my first feature. Thank you!

CML is a anti-RED biased list. I figured that out early on, and learned to ignore that crap but I can see how it must be hard for someone to take being passive-aggressively attacked on a personal level. Sigh. Its a cultural difference, I think, between analog and digital. People who get digital technology get RED, and how it works, and needs to work in the digital realm. Firmware upgrades alone, as a concept, must be weird to those who are used to analog gear.

That said, its time for RED to hunker down and and start mission #2. They are way past the origin story, and the demands made of RED now will be more, not less. Dragon will be the foundation and I'm hoping it'll be all we need and more (for the foreseeable future). As an indie filmmaker, I think that dynamic range is going to be very, very useful in many, many situations...

Jim Dragon may be here, but why stop? I remember the talk about 645 and other formats! Was the dream to create or surpass the the equivalent of film in digital? If so, then yes you've achieved that, and we're all waiting to be able to truly take advantage of the whole package -Dragon, Rocket X, and color science.

Would hate to see you make your final post as you've claimed to have done. Massive achievements with Red to date. Hope your influence continues to rub off on the rest of the Red Team.

Yes, Jim deserves better. As so often happens with true innovators, revolutionaries; those welded to the past and afraid of the future feel compelled to howl down and deride. For what purpose? To save others from the fear they themselves feel. The Wormtongues gather and mutter at those within their thrall that it will all end for ill. And when it doesn't? When it all works out fine? When it actually works out way better than even our greatest hopes? They're too far committed to negativity, there is so much egg aimed at their faces, that admitting their fears, their falsehoods and their fabrications seems much worse than admitting the sky isn't really falling.

But their time will come. It always does. And, sooner than later, the new guard comes through - also met with howls of derision and cries of "it's not like it used to be" - but that new guard shows what youth and freedom of thought can produce. And it's then that the visionary is vindicated - often well after their passing.

I'm glad Jim is calling it quits now and taking some well earned rest. This will allow him a break from the detractors and give him a box seat to watch the flames of his wildfire take hold and burn the dead wood to the ground.

Go well and in peace Jim. Watch and enjoy.

Jim, we are about the same age, give or take a couple years. I feel pretty good about the things I've experienced and accomplished in life until they get measured against a true giant of the industry like you. I've also had the pleasure of talking with you briefly, and even though you had no clue who I was, I always felt that you seemed truly interested in what I had to say. You are a rare man, driven to success by passion, not greed or fame, and just wanting to bring the rest of us along for the ride. I hope that you can enjoy the kudos and applause as your latest accomplishment, Dragon, takes the field. I think you just hit a grand slam! It's hard to maintain focus and energy as age starts to slow you down...believe me, I get it...but I think the passion in you runs too deep to just step away. I wish you peace, relaxation and happiness, however you choose to be involved as RED goes forward...you've certainly given the rest of us our money's worth!!

It is absolutely not.

It is a simple give me the facts place.

Facts not conjecture.

I guess you didn't really pay attention to your Red Dragon thread then. The majority of it is anti-Red. CML is full is anti-Red Fanboys just like Reduser is full of Red Fanboys.

And you come across as if everything Jim has done for our industry is irreverent because Red One didn't ship in Nov 2006.

The writer part of me has me imagining being in another's shoes while at the same time hovering above to observe outside forces. I perceive that Jim only has an inkling of the impact he has from an outsiders perspective because he is constantly being wounded (and thus made stronger as he heals). And while he has pretty much won over the Hollywood Players, he still gets vocal pushback from mid-level and lower tier participants.

By distancing himself from constantly being inside the Chocolate Factory, I think he will come to realize that the negativity comes from either a person's belief that negative comments are the only way to stand out in a crowd, a resistance to change, or perhaps an inability to fully comprehend what others are telling them.

And by passing the requirement to address those calumnies exclusively on to Jarred's shoulders, I believe that Jim will be able to better comprehend his achievements as he steps back and sees the big picture without having to deal with the nit-picky stuff that goes on as an insider.

I raise my cup of V-8 Juice with a dash of tabasco to Jim's imminent recharge and new venture... whatever that may entail.

Some people dont recorgnice an gold egg even if they would be sitting on it. I missed the tired post but hope everthing is allright!

Cheers
Joel

Dear Jim,

You have been a great leader and role model for many including me. Your posts and your actions have been insightful, witty and impactful on my life and I'm sure on the lives of many. I for one will miss reading your posts but will always be in awe and admiration of what you have achieved with RED and in your life. I salute you.
