  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm confused. RED released DSMC3 without a compatible EVF?

Maybe RED should have copied Arri on more than just the buttons and, you know, made sure to release a viewfinder haha.

Is the new Red monitor built using SmallHD parts? Since it uses the SmallHD OS.

Also sad about the 20mm image height (not "proper" 24mm which the full frame lenses are designed for... coupled with a extra sensor width I don't really need).

The last things I've done have been anamorphic, so I kinda feel like I'm paying for like half of a sensor I won't use, and missing 4mm of height.

Ah well, maybe they will make a 3:2 version later. But with Mavo Edge (a PROPER 24MM HIGH full frame 8K camera) for $12k with a new low-rolling-shutter, low-noise Sony sensor (seems similar to Sony a1 sensor?), plus Alexa Mini LF on the upper end....

I agree with other comments that this is a shot at the Venice for Netflix shows etc. But I dunno... I was shadowing the director on the second season of South Side (a Comedy Central / HBO Max TV show) a few months ago and they were using Alexa mini LF and Alexa mini as additional camera... and that was such a great-looking setup for not a ton of money.

I feel this was a shot at a target (Venice)... that's a bit behind. I'm sure there will be a new Venice soon (probably using a cousin of the sensor in the Mavo Edge and Sony's a1) and anyway the thing to beat right now isn't even Venice, it's Alexa LF. But hey, they are doing their best. I would still prefer to see RED just use a Sony sensor. Like a nice 36x24mm one.

I guess this is the midrange camera and we will see a future higher-end DSMC3 Red camera, but they are probably waiting to see what Arri do?

When they have a full range of cameras it will be cool to go from A to B to C cam with the same look. Again like Arri (well they don't have a low-end cam like Komodo)... although everyone just uses the Mini haha!

I am also glad they didn't go global shutter. To me following Arri (again, ha!) by having a very low rolling shutter is the way to go.

BTW I just realized this $25k camera only has 2mm more sensor height than the Alexa XT / mini.

For anamorphic it's really just a s35 camera with a little bonus.

Which is... fine. But just fine, not PRO SKULL LEVEL AWESOME.

Just use one of the high performance budget 4K EVFs over SDI - problem solved ;-). Joking aside, would love to see a DXL type EVF option - sadly, it would likely be close to $10K even if PV was willing.

IF, huge IF, an electronic global shutter capable of 32MP@120 FPS was an option, why not? AFAIK, that kind of capability won't fit into the size, heat and power envelope of a compact camera like Raptor or an ARRI MILF (mini large format).

Cheers - #19

You sound like Anna Kendrick questioning whether she is "beer commercial hot" ;-)

Hahaha yes! Arri's viewfinders are good though, and for $10k you can either get a good way towards a mini or a milf... or an entire old entire Alexa with EVF thrown in.

Sure! But wouldn't you prefer the exact same thing except with a LITTLE rolling shutter and, say some combo of 2 stops more latitude / better colorimetry / less noise / less price?

The tradeoffs for global shutter do not seem worth it right now. Maybe in 10 years?

I think people went a bit nuts on global shutter on REDUSER because, well, RED told them it was like FULL DEATH SKULL LEVEL COOL. Fanboys suddenly dissing the Alexa because it wasn't global shutter haha. Just because RED went from having worse rolling shutter than Arri to none, suddenly NOW this was VERY IMPORTANT.

Now watch the gyrations as they reverse course because now RED's doing what seems like the exact same thing as Arri :)

YES! I ask myself if I am beer commercial hot every day and the answer has always been no :) But you are right, now I should ask not if my film is cool, but if it is DARK PRO DEATH SKULL LEVEL COOL!

I don’t understand the “ Integrated V-Lock battery interface optimized for Micro V-Lock Batteries”
Will the mount be too slick to support any vmount batteries?

Lot of wide Vlocks out there that likely dont fit as the connectors are so close on the blindside.

Yea, that is a shame. I have tons of V-Mount that cost a fortune. Got some cool Bebop 290Wh and Paglink 150Wh, but can't imagine that they will fit. We also have the smaller Bebob that are great, I'm sure they will fit.

Aloha, just to provide some information about formats and lenses.

3:2 is a useful sensor size and common among DSLRs and mirrorless cameras as it's based on the 135 still format.

"The world is" DCI based (1.9 or 17:9 and wider aspect ratios like 2.39:1 within the container) or 16:9 based. Most of the displays in the world are 16:9.

RED V-Raptor 8K-VV has a 21.6mm tall sensor which is taller than Super 35mm 4-perf, which most anamorphic lenses ever made.

Yes there are newer anamorphic lenses that cover a larger image circle and can play nicely with 3:2 or even larger sensors now.

Last bit, keep in mind that 16:9 off a 3:2 camera is a 41.3mm image circle. V-Raptor 8K-VV and Monstro 8K VV are both 44.06mm in that aspect ratio. A slightly larger format.

A 3:2 sensor is a nice thing for sure. Heck some want 1:1 even. But RED sticking to DCI is intelligent as the motion picture industry as a whole fits within that ratio. It's a very cinema minded concept and nearly accidently due to 1.85:1 being close to 16:9, has been pretty damn useful.

The people behind the Digital Cinema Initiative did a lot of homework. And this is coming from somebody who does "giant screen work" which is a taller ratio for the small quantity of IMAX theaters that support it. It's a game of numbers. And in this case a useful format size.

Quick check: as the pixel pitch and Rez is same as Monstro I have to ask is this basically a Monstro??

Brand new sensor. Same pixel pitch/size of Dragon and Monstro.

Can you turn it vertically?

I too have shot 2x in red sensor and know that pain.

Haha yes! It would be nice if a camera manufacturer did PROPER support for 90 degree anamorphic mode...

Until then, Arri and Sony and Kinefinity all have more anamorphic-friendly sensors. My friend Matt Uhry and I just directed a commercial on full frame anamorphics on a Mavo LF and it was pretty awesome having that 24mm high sensor in a tiny package. Such a fantastic image - and the Mavo Edge looks even better. And I love the Alexa LF sensor (and its aspect ratio), always request it on a job if budget can handle it.

I'm sure RED must be working on a taller sensor version, it must annoy them not to be the biggest.
