  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

So true Geoff!
"you don't get owt for nowt"

Guys,

Take a deep breath and step back a bit.

Until we know what any of the new cameras actually produce it's nonsense to talk about dramatic changes.

Lets test the shit out of all the new cameras, look at the results and then get excited.

It's also part of the reality that the cost of the camera body is a tiny part of the total cost of ownership.

How's the backup? will you need to own multiple cameras to allow for slow repairs?

There's a saying in the north of England that seems appropriate "you don't get owt for nowt"

Or for those of you 60's SF freaks TANSTAAFL....

Just placed my preorder on the BMC 4K with EF mount and paid the deposit.

It says '4K Support' - I wonder does this mean 4K is recorded to an external recorder, not onboard?

Geoff,

Don't mistake enthusiasm for naivety.

Nobody would assume otherwise. But it still will be a great A cam despite what you choose to use on your sets :)

Once people will have actually shot with it, then I am sure some could determine that do to cost and also to form factor, they would indeed use it as an A cam.

I'm not sure what you mean, Many of us are already checking our bank accounts to order 2 or three of these bad boys, both S35 and Pocketcams. We know all the limitations of the previous cams, We know exactly what to expect. Blackmagic is predominantly a broadcast manufacturer, they understand all the specifications we desire. Prores on in a pocket cam what more can you ask for?

Could pocket be 4k hdmi etc out?

Could pocket be 4k hdmi etc out?

But here is a question, what are they releasing a still like pocket camera with such low res, is it really a 8mp to 16mp sensor binned to fullhd? 4k would have made a legend out of this camera, but what they are recording with probably could not keep up, but what if it is a high res still with clean live hdmi or thunder bolt/ displayport monitoring of 4k or 8k that can be recorded (displayport supports 8k). I'd be wanting to line up for the next BMD portable shuttle which is probably based on what is in the s35 4k camera.

It's all good. Consumers win. Black Magic are attempting to do to Red what Red did to Sony and Arri. This will be a bit uncomfortable for Red as now they understand how the established players felt with Epic. It will be hard for Red to respond to this threat -and it is a threat- without sounding like Sony and Arri. The more things change.....heh.

Whether the typical Reduser buys or hates on this Black Magic 4K camera simply does not matter. The opinions of many established cinematographers could not keep Red down and stop them from re-shaping the market, and all the opinions expressed by us here won't stop Black Magic from doing the same.

This is a game changer in true sense of the phrase. As much as Red's Epic once was. I love progress.

The truth is that Red shifts a better product that budgets bigger than its price depend on. BMD is actually charging a lot more than they could. We will maybe see $500 uhd cameras soon, that with a little modification could have done uncompressed. The pocket could have been 4k. Now, what happened with Epic may well happen with Scarlet, hopefully with a starter pack all rounder module, and the Scarlet would be at its true price. The BMD is nowhere near as sophisticated for a few thousand less (they would have to drop the price) just another choice, maybe cinema people prefer scarlet, maybe video people prefer BMD. The point is that Red has locked itself into a high complexity low volume so far, (maybe Redray uses existing chip design and contribute to paying off the cost) and BMD is using 3rd party commodity chips but still not high volume enough, but lower complexity which also prevents it dropping enough to have the market to itself.

Hrvoje - perhaps you can explain to us what this means in terms of dynamic range in stops! I have been trying to work this out.

EDIT: Also, wht does cmosis mean by extended dynamic range mode?

66 dB should entail 11 stops. 6 dB per stop.
Cmosis uses a dual sensor readout.

There are some smart folks over at BlackMagic and I fully expect them to implement an OLPF at some point, or perhaps attempt to use some kind of processing to achieve the same goal. My limited physics understanding leads me to believe that when particular frequencies are attenuated optically prior to bayer reconstruction you end up with minimal loss of genuine high frequency detail in exchange for dramatically less aliasing/moire (different equations but similar causality).

IAC, all due respect to the BM crew, but all those times Jim noted how insanely difficult a lot of the RED program was to execute - I don't think that's smoke. It might be trivial in 10 years, but at the moment, it's still a serious bit of engineering to make a proper digital cinema camera - especially when your total cost of content has to be low enough to enable a $4,000 price point. Best part, is that like Jim and the RedTeam, Grant and his peeps can shut up all the doubters by delivering a great camera. Until then...

Cheers - #19

The olpf probably costs to much to implement yet. I remember back in the days before Red a friend of mine, was developing another camera but had to price a bayer array etc for the sensor. From memory it was a huge price that you have to sell high volumes of cameras to factor away in a low price. The olpf is probably similar.

Subsequently my friend went to BMD, and a few other employers, with his camera design skills to see them a number of years back.

So effectively, this camera will have about as much dynamic range as the original Red One M? That is pretty piss poor if that is the case.

Well...it is still too early to know about which sensor is used...and it doesn't say "4K cinema camera" on the poster. :)

and you know all this from a banner image, lol heh heh heh heh, just yanking your chain

I'm not sure what you mean?

What I mean, is that once the camera is out and people get to see if they like the image quality and various specs, also considering the extremely low price and the very small form factor they could choose to go for it for A cam as well indeed, and not just as a Crash cam, just will not be the case for me, as I would only consider it as a Crash cam if I could not place or afford to crash an Epic Dragon... ;).

Black Magic done the job , I remember when RED announced 3k for 3k , & now here Black Magic made it in real... 4k for under 4k

lol you think BMC S35 will effect RED market? hahahhaha
