  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

is this a Design flaw in the new DSMC2 Body?

I don't really like the way the V-mount Battery sit on the Scarlet-W and Weapon Body.

But I think if RED (or unother manufacturer) comes with a slight modification in the battery contacts it will fix the issue.

I guess it won't be called V-mount battery but at least will sit more natural.

another solution I think is RED redesigning the "DSMC² BASE I/O V-LOCK EXPANDER" without blocking the air vents.

What do guys think about this?

im also really torn on this situation, i dont want a battery sticking way up, but the AB cine models seem really fat compared to the new slim ones out there.
im surprised the v-lock expander wasnt designed slightly differently to accommodate the style of the camera and the style and shape of batteries that are out there.

I wouldn't describe them as fat at all. They are thinner in width than my Dynacore bricks:

Yep, what Bob said. The 190Wh just didn't "fit" the form factor.

The Anton Bauer Cine batteries are actually smaller than I previously thought. I picked up a few 150Wh in V-Lock.

Here it is on RED Weapon with the Element Technical V-Lock Module:

Early impressions are very good. I just got them Saturday and will be shooting with them all week. I'll have a good idea how they hold up after a few days of filming. Their size is certainly more in line with smaller cameras.

really? i mean just going by the picture they look to be twice the depth of any battery i have ever used. though i dont have them in person.

Oh you mean in length. Here's a picture. Fat is usually a width thing in my world.

They are a bit longer, you have to put the cells somewhere, but length isn't deterring me from these whatsoever. Cameras are small now. I like this form factor. Similar to my REDVOLT XLs in reality.

see what your saying. but the fans are down there. if you like your battery to go low looks like wooden camera has some solutions for that

How can the fans be blocked? There's a gap between the fans and the battery. As I see it, this issue is the one single big issue I have with the new body. I've never been on any Red set that used the XL batteries, so there has to be a good solution for using Red batteries on the DSCM2. Sawing off the handle is not the way to go. I thought about this solution as well, but it would mean I have to buy a new set of batteries so I could really just go with anything else in that case. Because batteries tend to loose strength over time, it's not the best thing to sell as second hand, which means it's a freakin waste of money just to be able to use the V-lock mount. It also creates a situation where the handle is a bit too small when operating. There's a lot of situations where using that top handle is done while shooting and now we have to use a small metal handle because the Red bricks aren't designed to fit onto the new body with the top handle.

um, i mean how far it sticks out, isnt that the depth? length would be top to bottom, width would be side to side and depth is how fat it is on the back, as in how thin the new slims are. they seem twice as thick and even more then the new slims batteries other manufactures are putting out, though i love the low profile, hence being torn.

Judging by this picture, it appears that it's impossible to use a standard sized V-mount brick in conjunction with the top handle. That does feel like a huge design oversight in my opinion, but would explain why all the Weapon packages come standard with RedVolt XLs and not bricks. I personally have a handful of Red Bricks, so this really bums me out to know that I can't use them unless I take the top handle off, which basically lives on my camera (I would imagine most people consider top handles to be essential, no?).

Jarred even hinted that Red is designing their own low-profile V-lock batteries like these below, but man... now I gotta dump money into new V-locks? What a bummer.

Maybe there is reasons why the V-lock module is not shipping just yet...

One can have hopes right :)

Checked out that Anton bour battery and really dont like them the Sony Vlocks are so much nicer.

The design of the DSMC2 is just fantastic!

The design of the V-Lock Battery plates however aren't... At list not for my style...

I have design a special plate to lower the center f gravity a great deal on the Epic Dragon... If few of the solutions out there don't turn out good enough for me on Weapon... I'll design my own... The battery top should and must be at camera top level... Not even one INCH above it... This is how I like it and want it...

Or the only other solution is to go 3 Stud Gold Plate/AB Batteries and then you are good to go as with Phil's solution, problem is those batteries are really FAT... But there are also some Shorter V-Lock Batteries out there...

Problem is I have tried them all and only have been happy with the HD series form Blueshape... So I like to continue using them... Hopefully they'll be bringing out a shorter version as per to some NAB discussions.

Im leaning towards the cine AB batteries in v-lock as well. Wondering of you need to buy the AB charger also or if I can still use my old v-lock charger.

I'm pretty sure the OMOD replaces the base expanders

the wooden camera solution i mentioned before seems like the most cost effective way solve this problem while still using the red expanders

Matthew, I'm referring to the OMOD battery plate, not the OMOD I/O units. :)

im guessing that wont work with the v-lock i/o expander?

It's a battery plate only, so I'm fairly certain it can be used with the base expander and such. Don't quote me on this, but I'm nearly positive that I read it somewhere in one of the two OMOD threads.

Not exactly a slight mod :)
But this would require every single battery manufacture to make the change...not gonna happen.

Wouldn't it be better to solve the problem on the Weapon side?

Those Anton Bauer Cine Batteries look really neat. would be nice to see a slim version or something

Looking at Phill's Wespon picture with the New "
DSMC² TOP HANDLE" definitely make me confirm this was a Design Flaw.

But because is not been out yet I guess still time for a redesing or a Version 2
