  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

Currently shown footage is RED's OLPF + Light Iron color science. This is an ongoing developing project. By 4th quarter it will be PV's custom OLPF and Light Iron's color science.

Thanks for that tidbit Phil.

Makes the quality characteristics of the image in their film even more intriguing and exciting.

It looks like they also have to develop their own OLPF thinner than the RED one's to be compatible with their lenses that have protruding back elements. So they could have shot with a prototype OLPF (perhaps based on the STD?).

Pat

The FFD is far greater with PV lens mount, there will likely be way more space than with PL lenses.

One thing I always liked about RED is how the company was a revolution against the establishment, a revolution that made the establishment change its business, and a revolution that allowed many new businesses to flourish.

Today, I see (just saw in person) a RED Camera, clearly a weapon camera, clearly manufactured by RED, with a software that screams RED left and right, and yet, the camera says Panavision all over the place, and the Panavision people blatantly saying that it is a "Panavision camera... with a RED Sensor", which is total BS. It is a RED Camera with a Panavision sticker.

Kudos to RED for making finally convincing the establishment and hence, making a major step in the revolution happen, but it is kind of a shame that the deal came through by giving Panavision a credit that in all honesty... they do not deserve.

Diplomacy, I guess.

RED is really strong beeing quiet about Panavision, before the announcement AND after. Staying quiet for RED (wich is not in their DNA) for such a big collaboration and not giving any statement about the CS discussion is interesting.
Kudos to RED.

That's one way of looking at it.

Another is that a 10 year old quest reached a heart of Hollywood.

Maybe we could get the LI color science based on the current OLPF whenever they move on and tweak it for their own OLPF, why let the old color science just lie around :tongue_smilie:

I bet there ins't anything we couldn't do to make it LI compatible, that isn't allready in Graeme's color science.

I'm still gonna nag on Red and Graeme until we get it or something similar

My Grandfather told me many times ... "everything comes out in the wash."

My fave quote of the day.

Another thing that has perhaps not been mentioned, is there are three AMERICAN movie companies - Panavision, RED and Light Iron - coming together to make a new kind of movie magic in Hollywood. There's something kind of wonderful about this - a reminder that Hollywood has ALWAYS been a home to incredible technical achievements, not just artistic ones.

On a side note for this, will it ever be possible for other countries to rent the Panavision or will it strictly be Hollywood movies? Will there be Panavision rental offices around the world that provide the camera system for films? I get that most of the big budget scaled movies that this camera will be provided for is the bulk of the rentals, but I garantuee that it would be a hit globally.

I recognize RED design all over this thing. Panavision sticker is nice tho, its clearly a political and strategic move by RED.

On the contrary, this is a very natural growth for all three companies in my view. To imply Panavision simply slapped a sticker on it is shortsighted. I see it as a very nice blending of complimentary skills and talents from three very prominent organizations.
