  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

Yeah, in a way it's weird and sad to see this camera, which is obviously RED everywhere, to be advertised without giving more credit to RED. I get it, and in a way Panavision knighted RED with this "rehousing" and "just" adding more on top. But still, i miss the RED-logo on this somewhere. ;)

Seems pretty odd to me, no "RED inside" marking anywhere....wonder what Jim thinks about this camera.

Because of all the unreasonable hate against Red cameras from people who don't know better I think the thoughts are to let people shoot with this and then whisper in their ears.... "you know what... it's actually a Red [CUT TO] reaction face [CUT TO] massive audience laughter.

:tongue_smilie:

I'm so tired of this "unreasonable hate" as you correctly call it. People are still quoting issues of the early RED One as if they were still problems today.

Quick question: The DXL website says "Open File Format," but it still seems to just shoot .r3d (and ProRes and DNx?) I thought maybe they meant CinemaDNG, but it doesn't appear so. What's open about the file format?

Outstanding and the great part is you can tell who made it! Panavision is huge in the motion picture world. This lets me know who has put in the great works to make this happen, congrats RED Team...I so proud that I invested in a company that has made and will continue to make a difference. Most of all giving us an affordable way to create our visions.

I've had this a few times, the Red One is now and has been a super solid performer for many years, however in the early days I think it did almost as much damage as good to the RED brand. It's weird when this gets bought up, stuff like I remember on a shoot back in blah blah blah.

This new Panavision really helps squash these arguments : ) It's a brand most the old schoolers trust,

Just thinking about it:

This new Panavision is 'REDS TROJAN HORSE'

Nobody from Red is making any comment on the 'speculation it's a Red Weapon' , remember Panavision was Reds largest customer........ my bet is the colour science from PV will never be useable in Weapon, as it's not a Weapon just the Red sensor. In short it's a competing camera.

I own A R1 now and for a great reason...things may not be perfect for us as the user but hands down its still a perfect camera that made all of this happen. If they would have tanked everyone would be like..remember that company that tried to take out film or get close to it haha they were crazy. No one can invent a camera like that. Haters will hate because they couldn't do it. Haters will always have great ideas after you create something, they always say if it was me i would have...that will never work...dude you are wasting your time with that. Our world is full of hater's and people that bitch about everything as if you need their input. Oh well life goes on. Panavision footage please =)

I beg to differ. I believe that it's as much a Weapon as the Xenomorph. If you look on the front plate, on the media bay, the pogo connectors, on the 2 menu displays. It's all RED. If it has RED's UI, it has to have RED processors, and as far as I know, no other company out there has hardware that can deal with as much data as the RED's ASIC's. It's a Weapon with some extra goodies in the back and a slightly different hood. But it's the same engine.
And I am willing to put money down that those cameras are built in a certain factory in Irvine...

Tend to agree. And the connections to various accs... wouldn't be surprised to learn that OMOD had a hand in building those exclusively for PV.

Cinematographers talk about the Panavision Millennium DXL camera on Vimeo... https://vimeo.com/169289501

The images looks promising, custom filtration, PV optics, Light Iron CS and post. Obviously part sales pitch, the teaser pieces demonstrate a different texture than the traditional signature RED image. The improvements look significant and tangible. Although, there has been persistent debate that RED color with a bit of color treatment and filtration was easily matchable to ARRI color, perhaps RED/Panavison will demonstrate there was room for real improvement after all. The proof will be in the pudding. And different than the RED Xenomorph, its more than a simple hardware mashup.

I, for one, welcome our new Panavision overlords.

So, would it be reasonable to suggest that LI's LUT is baked into the RAW file? Of course it doesn't sound like a necessary thing to do, but it would mean that there is one less thing for the colorist to do in post.

Your question is an oxymoron. RAW recording means sensor data recorded straight into a file, which means nothing and I mean nothing else is recorded beside the sensor data. People routinely now call Prores Alexa recording RAW, which, again, makes as much sense, as what you just asked...
Panavision will be using their own proprietary LI Color science, which only makes sense, as they will use their own developed OLPF and IR. Other than that, there is nothing else special about that camera. . It's VV Weapon with Panavision designed ergonomics. All that talk about "tuning it and adding some cinematically desired tricks" just sounds like market speak. Color work done by Graemme is not that different...
In DI there are ACES transforms, that are called RRT and DRT, that too rely on a human perception. Some feel, that some are more filmic, than other. So, there are many ways to introduce a "look" transforms into a image workflow, beside baking in LUTs into an image. As a matter of fact, doing that is just about the worst thing one can do...
