  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

EDIT: Isaac, looks like you should get allocated, based on our current production schedule, around Dec 23 or 3. So, Dec 2 is probably a couple of days too early to get it, sorry...

Brent, just saw this, did you mean "December 2nd or 3rd"? I assume you didn't try to imply time travel was going to take place.

Yeah, it's awesome, looking forward to the UW shooting OLPF as well.

So John, you didn't make any commitments to deliver/start shipping, Jarred did, RED did. Keeping others to their commitments isn't "berating" anyone, its being held accountable. I'm okay with that.

Dragon is the only digital cinema camera that can shoot more than one 'stock', just like loading different film into an analogue camera.

And FWIW I don't recall anyone berating film manufacturers for producing faster and slower film stocks rather than just making one perfect one.

Although Sony has a swappable OLPF, it's not the same use of the concept. Doesn't feel or result in the look of two sister film stocks with different speeds. I'd also doubt that you'll see many third party creative options available with Sony's system ;)

Exactly right. The Sony OLPFs appear designed to ensure optimal sharpness btw 2K and 4K. Wheres Dragon OLPFs give filmmakers multiple cameras in one body - a much more ambitious approach (which I have to imagine will soon be emulated by other camera platforms).

What a maintenance issue this will be and will require unnecessary purchases and headaches for owners to match cameras.

How about just one good OLFP that will do Low Light and good skin tones? How's that for a break through idea!!! Of course I also want blue sky and green grass too. Will I need an OLPF for this to?

This needs remedied and fixed. To say we now have "options" is an excuse in my opinion as it seems like an after thought to fix something. "Options" are for lens filters not OPLF at the sensor.
Have you ever used the "low light" OLPF ? I've been using it for many months now, and I can assure you it does produce fantastic skintones already. Just because the new one makes skintones even better doesn't mean the first one has suddenly become bad.

Red, wouldn't it be a good idea to change the names to something shorter and easier to remember, like "Lowlight OLPF" and "Highlight OLPF" ? Naming the new one "Skintone/highlight OLPF" gives the impression that the original OLPF was bad at skintones, which is absolutely NOT true. Wasn't Gone girl for example shot with the original lowlight OLPF ? I don't remember anyone saying bad things about skintones in this movie ?

I will certainly at some point get the swappable OLPF system because choice is good, and I hope other third party OLPFs will be released later that will broaden our possibilities even more, but for now I am perfectly happy with the "Lowlight" OLPF. Or may we call it "Lowlight/skintone OLPF" too ? ;-)

True, but the Sony OLPF could just as easily be replaced with a 3:rd party solution that has other features in the glass like ND, color cast and other filtering. I know you work on such things for the epic but is anything available, yet?

Um...the look in Gone Girl was definitely not about beauty. To my eyes, the look was perfectly consistent with the moral ugliness of the characters, and in no way was the imaging a weakness of the movie. Gone Girl is not a film that's going to make a top-10 list for how beautifully the scenes are rendered. Even the Lake House scenes are shot to emphasize coldness and sterility.

Very soon. I'll only properly announce when I have stock to ship :)

A nobel business model.

I guess it is easier to be noble when there is no competition. Vendors with competition need to market their products early for a number of obvious reasons. Which is part of the reason why RU is full of threads with early protos and missed deadlines.

I`d like to see OLPF vendors pop up left right and center but lets face it, there will end up being a very small amount of OLPFS to use that are not experimental/avant-garde .

Its also comparatively easy when you've already covered your R&D with another paid purpose as I have, and the items are of low-ish value. I'm in no way point scoring here - just stating an intention.

The one problem I see though is how color is going to be handled with third parties like yourself John. Are you going to provide LUTs for 5600k and 3200k to correct for your filtration or are you just going to to match LLO as closely as possible for color filtration?

The only stuff I'll be producing is far enough away from real world colour perception that it all becomes a moot point. Recommended calibration is likely to be the LLO as a basis, but who's to say what infrared or transmissive fluorescent UV should look like. False colour is false however we work it.

I would expect only Red's official offerings to have matched colour calibration.

The other question that comes to mind is, if third parties (or even Red) start making other OLPFs, for instance with integrated diffusion, will they offer both low and highlight versions for every single one of them, or how will it work ?

I was looking up Isaac specifically on that. Depends when you ordered. We are shipping daily. I would expect all current backorders to get caught up within the next 2-3 weeks....

Hi Brent,

I didn't send my e-mail requesting the OLPF Interchangeable kit to "support@red.com"

I sent it to "dragonupgrade@red.com" - on October 1st.

I assume I'm still in the queue? I seem to remember this was to e-mail address to use.
Thanks!
George
