  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

Just heard from RED today that my ordered, two STH OLPF"S are now expected at the end of this month. The Low lights are in bothe of my cameras and working just fine, in the meantime...

Thank you very much

Fury

I wrote to my rep, let's see what he'll say.

Can RED chime in on this?

Thanks!

There's been two sides to image texture/noise/grain from the get go in regards to Dragon.

If any of you went to the theater this weekend you likely understand why. Take a look at the last several movies shot on KODAK VISION3 50D, 200T, 250D, and 500T and how they appear in theaters and when brought to home-style displays. If that level of texture/noise/grain doesn't bother you than you likely have been doing just fine with the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF at various ISOs, though it is rather clean at the lower ratings. This is what I've found when showing some with film experience Dragon. In fact they have rather nice things to say about the texture occasionally.

On the flip side of this some are clamoring for cleaner and cleaner images at higher ISOs. This has been the trend with cameras utilizing noise reduction in the camera, which Red does not believe in for a variety of valid reasons. Those working from a video and commercial background seem to have been the loudest desiring less and less texture.

With the Low Light Optimized OLPF you are essentially getting a cleaner image in comparison to the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF by 1 to 1.3 stops. The difference itself is most noticeable in the ISO 500-2000+ range when doing side by side observations. Interestingly enough for those who can deal subtle texture you might find you can get nice images even past the recommended ISO range with the LLO OLPF. I've shot very usable ISO 4000 and 5000 material recently, which is nice when the situation would call for that.

The good news here is there is a solution for both types of shooters. And with the Interchangeable OLPF you should be able to cater to client's and job's needs depending on what's needed with the same camera.

I'm new to this and I'm trying to wrap my head around when I'd use one OLPF over the other. Are we essentially saying the low-light OLPF should be used for 500-2000 ISO and the skintone OLPF for anything 500 and below?

Nope. I'm merely pointing out where the differences are most visible between the two. Both OLPFS are very clean at the lower ISO and it's harder to differentiate between them.

Red'a recommended and "cinema ready" ISO range of 250-2000 stands for both OLPFs in my mind as they are both cleaner than film overall across that range.

If you're curious how I work: Skin Tone - Highlight from ISO 250-1280. Low Light Optimized for ISO 500-2000 and a bit over if necessary. That's my preference after some fairly elaborate testing. There is no right or wrong answer here though. Just what you prefer doing.

It's an estimate based on us getting through current back log and if someone was to place an order now. We are shipping in very good qty now.

I ordered my LLO Oplf a month ago. Why does the Red website say "Orders placed today expected to ship within 7-10 business Days"?

Its said that for a couple of weeks now. I've has my LLO on order for a couple of months, so I'm still not sure when to expect mine to ship, Michael. Sme with the sidewinder.

Dude, you totally missed the conversation that was happening :) We are talking about the surface of the plastic around the OLPF, not the image produced.

Yes, exactly. I know all about the differences between the two OLPFs.

I'm talking about the different materials used in the Interchangeable OLPF systems. An inner piece is "smooth" in some cases (installed earlier) while the same piece is "rough" in systems installed later - apparently there to scatter light even further and avoid reflections.

Can all cameras be upgraded to the later version?

I wasn't talking about you, I was quoting Robert who was confused. You and I are talking about the same thing.

But the smooth isn't necessarily the older design. I just got my LL OLPF two days ago and it's the smooth design. My HST OLPF I got almost a month ago and it's the bubble design. That said, I see what you are saying about scattered light, but not sure that's what it's there for or even accidentally can do.

I know Matthew! I wasn't talking about you, either :-)

In any case - my Bomb Squad rep got back to me today - apparently, the "smooth" design is the latest version, not the other way around.

Cheers,
George

I really don't think it has any impact on image quality. I think it's simply the material being used in the injection mold, which is most likely provided by an outside source.

Just like some REDMAGs have a glossier finish, and some are more matte black. Different revs from different batches.

Sounds good, it seems to move now, I ordered: 09.13.2014

Yes, Isaac. I certainly think it should arrive soon. Enjoy. :O) I haven't gotten a tracking number yet. I really hope it will be shipped today, so I have the weekend to test. Edit, perhaps not, but soon, I will update this post when I get the package/edit.
