  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

Hey Jarred,

Taking DragonM8 back to the COURMAYEUR & Mont Blanc for several weeks during Christmas & New Year for an exciting shoot, and would love to put to use the Monochrome and IR OLPF's... Any update on their availability, even if just to test the proto and return them?

Hey Brent, or any other member of the bomb squad; it's said '7-10' days on the extra OLPFs (waiting on an LLO OLPF myself) for the last month and a half. Can we expect 2nd OLPFs (1st being the ones installed in our Dragons) to begin shipping soon?

I really hate to pester (no really, I hate asking repeatedly), but any chance these will ship soon? Trying to get an LLO OLPF in advance of a BIG production that kicks off on the 2nd of December and I had NO idea it would take this long to get a single OLPF.

Any help/thoughts?

Ketch, it is more than just qualifying an OLPF, it is also dialing in the color science settings for each one. So, we don't really have ability to just toss out half-baked prototypes. It is one of those "it is ready when it is ready" hollistically things....

Isaac, I know we had an issue where a batch did not meet our QC specs so that set us back a few days. I am working with supply chain right now to get a better estimate and we will update the web site accordingly, if needed. My apologies....

Well... I have a couple of the Low Light ones here in New Zealand. But, the two kits have not been sent yet.

Pretty frustrating.

(Of course, we have a big production coming up next week where the swappable OLPF's would be beneficial...)

Ok, looks like the out-of-spec parts situation has been resolved and we will again be shipping both versions of the OLPFs starting tomorrow. Let me see if I can see where you are in line to see if Dec is in the realm of possibility....

EDIT: Isaac, looks like you should get allocated, based on our current production schedule, around Dec 23 or 3. So, Dec 2 is probably a couple of days too early to get it, sorry...

Will this include the DIY kits that I'm desperately waiting for?

Thank you, Brent. Feel free to PM me with the good/bad news. Danke!

Correct, Russ, same pool of parts.

Isaac, we will process that order as soon as allocated.

Looking at that OLPF I don't know if this is an accident but this could be applicable to the lens mounts. Wouldn't the best treatment to avoid gate flare being a set of concentric fins? The only reflection you would get then would be the very tips which would be very small. It would nearly eliminate gate flare.

What a maintenance issue this will be and will require unnecessary purchases and headaches for owners to match cameras.

How about just one good OLFP that will do Low Light and good skin tones? How's that for a break through idea!!! Of course I also want blue sky and green grass too. Will I need an OLPF for this to?

This needs remedied and fixed. To say we now have "options" is an excuse in my opinion as it seems like an after thought to fix something. "Options" are for lens filters not OPLF at the sensor.

We will have "options" once that we all can have the swap system in our cameras and once the OLPF are widely available… which unfortunately doesn't seem to be the case, at least for me, many months after this problem appeared with the "new" OLPF. I'll be shooting a project that involves a lot of candelight in a couple of weeks and 250-320 ASA rating is not an option. And I still don't have an ETA for the modification kits and interchangeable OLPFs, which is really dissapointing.

Agreed. I had no idea the other OLPF would be this hard to get.

Trying to to be cool about it. But it was a hassle to get the modification and a bigger hassle to not have the modules to justify the medication in the first place.

I hear you Isaac, especially when you have work on the line and you are already heavily invested in RED, it's hard to go rent another camera.

What is it exactly that you want from the interchangeable OLPF? Something technical or more with expectations created?

We had to send our camera in the get a board replaced a few weeks back and I was able to request and receive the upgrade to interchangeable OLPFs. I also gave up my SkinTone highlight for the more light sensitive Old OLPF but even though my camera was in the shop, they would not provide me with both, I had to choose, even though I ordered both long ago...

Is this question directed at me? My expectations are that now DPs are aware of the modular OLPFs, and asking for them, and I have to tell them currently they only have a choice of STH because that's all that IS available until my LLO ships. So I went with SKH because that seemed to cover the most of what I was doing. But it's tough when a DP wants both, and I have to dance around that issue because the extra one has yet to ship. I appreciate Brent's recent update, but it's basically, "we had a delay, and we're trying to get through them as fast as possible" which amounts to the same status most of us had almost two months ago.

I know RED *WILL* fulfill the orders, it's just becoming a pain point.

Yes Isaac, the question was for you and I was looking to understand what you wanted exactly. If it was something you wanted "technically" from shooting or more the disappointment in RED following through on expectations they created.

OLPFs shipping "by the end of the month," from Jarreds post in September. It's understandable your frustrated, as am I.

It's something I've been getting requests for, for the last month, that I can't fulfill to the people wanting to work with me and my camera. And yes, it's disappointing that extra OLPFs can't be shipped in enough quantity to those who've already taken the modular OLPF plunge.

Not like we're trying to get a dozen spares per camera. Just one would suffice.

The OLPF you are describing is the Low Light Optimized OLPF. It does indeed produce good skin tones. And in side by sides between it and the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF the difference in color is fairly minimal. Which is sort of just good news if you think about as the LLO OLPF is more or less a revised look at what shipped with Dragon from the get go.

The Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF serves the purpose of those who want that extra ounce of image quality and to get rid of any potential hot light source artifacts.

While "options" aren't something you might find useful, there's a slew of other folks who do like to have choices on this front.

I personally shoot with the STH OLPF for nearly everything. But I'm not constantly working at ISO 2000 or anything like that and I'm also not always concerned with making glass clean images.

Dragon is the only digital cinema camera that can shoot more than one 'stock', just like loading different film into an analogue camera.

And FWIW I don't recall anyone berating film manufacturers for producing faster and slower film stocks rather than just making one perfect one.
