  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

You have too much time on your hands my friend.

FYI, for those counting and keeping track. I've swapped out the OLPFs 44 times! It's a pretty easy thing to do.

Heh. I'm actually ridiculously into this concept and think a fair amount of shooters will be too. Especially once we get done to the specialty IR Color and IR Black and White OLPFs.

Hehe, you might be catching me up - but I'm way past counting these days :P

I wish I'd said no thanks. I sent the camera in via overnight, on monday, and it's been there since tuesday. I was told this upgrade would be done in 1-2 business days in time to get back by tomorrow.

Turns out the IOB board has to be upgraded, which would push the delivery till next week. I have a shoot I leave for on sunday/monday AM. Now it's looking like I'll have to sub-rent. Really really unhappy about this situation.

Ughhh....

Why ?? IOB board has to be upgraded ?? What's that Isaac ? I asked for the "kit" How do i know my IOB board have to be upgraded!!

I have no idea. I had to subrent a camera due to mine not being back in time. Hoping it's back end of this coming week. I'd love to know what the heck the IOB board is, and why it adds 3-4 days on to the process. My camera was upgraded to Dragon in late May, I didn't think the hardware was revised that soon.

Between workshops and rather extreme testing for Redusers and some "local folk" plus my own image expectations putting these through the paces has been a rather high priority.

For instance, if on the 15th swap out the OLPF snapped in two and couldn't work anymore Red and Redusers would be the first to hear about it. Luckily they are pretty rugged with metal frames and rubber gaskets that seem to be built very well.

Did a bit of research as I was curious about exactly what the IOB was from our off board conversation. More or less it's an "Input Output Board" found within DSMC bodies. Which to me means if something is awry with that particular board it's likely important to remedy as it can effect the way the camera performs and might even effect image quality. In terms of why it's adding time to the process it's likely because your camera brain is being dissecting, IOB swapped out, put back together and QC'd before returning to you. That last step is very important in reality and each camera gets tested thoroughly when something like this is replaced.

lets hope the extra time at RED is just because they're testing it more thoroughly. Log files can reveal issues you weren't even aware of. Better they check everything now before it's discovered on an actual shoot.

The IOB board wasn't defective. It was just an older revision that they wanted to swap out. So a 1-2 day turn around turned into a week and a half. So it's still at red. Hopefully it's back end of this coming week.

I've been out of a camera for over a week too and I'm not sure it will be back next week either. Luckily the RED network here in Toronto has been very supportive and have offered me a camera for an upcoming shoot if I need it. Phew!

Edit. I should clarify, that my camera was sent back for something unrelated to OLPF. And since it was already there, I requested to have the OLPF module installed.

I was thankfully able to snag a body to prep for our shoot in Texas this week. Hoping the camera can finish up by Friday and make it back next Monday. I'm sorry to red RMA, because I'll be bugging them throughout the week for status updates.

My Dragon was delivered on Tuesday, October 28th, to RED. My bomb squad rep said it would only take 1-2 business days to complete the process, and that by Friday I should have the camera back. Nothing was wrong with any internal components, AFAIK.

When I called for an update on Thursday hoping they get my camera back to me in time for a weekend shoot, RED said the following:

"Your camera is currently going through Outbound testing and should be complete by the end of the day Friday"

I haven't received a FEDEX tracking number, so I have to assume they didn't ship it yet. Clearly, this process IS NOT 1-2 business days.

I had the same happen when I did the Dragon sensor update. It appears that if you ask "how long will the upgrade take", the reps consistently quote the length of time for exactly that -- which doesn't include the system QA, even though RED itself mandates the QA. Technically, they have answered your question correctly, but a cogent answer would take into consideration the obvious context that you are asking the question from, which is "when am I going to get the thing back?" It's really kind of curious; I almost missed out on a feature shoot because of it. So now, standard practice, I tack on a bunch of days to what they say.

My cameras have been there since Thursday of last week. I was just told on the phone that 7-10 business days is normal for this upgrade.

I think Red has been swamped with many Dragon and OLPF upgrades in October and probably in November too. My camera was delivered to Red on Tuesday, Oct 7th and Red shipped it out on Monday, Oct 27th. I know it sounds a long delay compared to the typical turn-around time of 7-10 business days. However, in reality, it just took three more business days to complete the Dragon and OLPF upgrade at the same time. Give Red and yourself enough slack so you don't need to fight for the every hours.

Mine has been there 10 days now for the new sensor/olpf upgrade. I was told it would be done by the end of this week...
I was able to push back a shoot until next week, so as long as they have it done and shipped back to me by Friday, I should be good.
I can imagine how many orders they have coming in now that the price is going up by $3k.

Sorry to hear man.. I just checked and your camera did pass final QC today so you should get that tracking number tomorrow.

Hi Jarred,

My Carbon Fiber is only a few months old and has been at Red for a few days,, for the Interchangeable changeout as well. Musy say VERY happy with myBattle Tested M DSragon interchangeable changeout-works great so far.

I was told today that a few boards need to be changed out, as part of the upgrade process and my camera should be ready by the end of the week. My rep did tell me that sometimes the boards have to be changed, as part of the process. Could you perhaps post some info on the board/camera age and perhaps that would be a guideline for those, who are sending cameras into RED and the expected turnaround time. Seems though, that there are some owners doing the changeout, on their own with cameras significantly older than two months, but maybe not.

Thank you very much

Fury

Nick, certainly having one of the frist Carbon Fibers means that your camera (and mine as well) were birthed very early in the Dragon growth cycle. I for one am always thrilled to get any internal boards upgraded for free to the latest and greatest versions that the Dragons shipping now receive. It keeps my camera fresh, up-to-date and certainly not obsoleted or somehow left behind because I was an early adpoter of the Dragon line... To the contrary, I've been able to shoot Dragons exclusively now for well over a year (and a year and a half since my first Dragon shoot) and many people are just NOW getting cameras upgraded! This all means the shelf life of my camera is FAR from over.

And that my friend is pretty effen cool!
