  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

Yes, you need something approaching the right thickness of glass in between, with at least some degree of anti-reflective coating as a bare minimum. No glass - no infinity focus, glass but no coating : nasty internal reflections

I have a solution on this front, but there may soon be official stuff of course :)

Thanks John, I suspected as much. My thought is that certain situations would have so little high frequency detail and contrast that aliasing concerns would be minimal - like night exteriors with no significant light sources in frame, etc. Like most folks I'll be happy to start my swappable OLPF collection with just the LLO (V1) and Skin/Highlight (V2) but like the idea of an option that eats as little light as possible for certain situations, even if it meant wicked aliasing on some material.

Cheers - #19

This swappable OLPF option has really jump-started the revolution all over again - even more so than Dragon itself. And done with so little hoopla, at a phenomenal price....

Only RED.

Will this upgrade limit lens choice? For example the Angenieux DP lenses do not work with the motion mount, would this olpf system interfere with the distance such lens could enter the camera and prevent usage?

So damn cool! That something only RED considers being doable. Great way to redefine and underline the modularity concept.

Looking forward to play around with that on my soon to be upgraded Scarlet.

"Monochrome: Standard Monochrome OLPF"

Does this mean that regular epic dragons will essentially be equivalent to the monochrome version with that OLPF installed?

Sony has interchangable OLPFs since 2012.

No. A true monochrome version has no color filters on the single photocells. That's where it's extra sensitivity and phenomenal smoothness comes from.

The OLPF has been removable on Epic since before then, with custom options available. This is the concept spreading its wings, but its been designed in from the start.

I think it means that the Monochrome Epic Dragon can move to interchangeable OLPFs and still use its existing OLPF material.

The colour filter array in front of the sensor on the Colour Epic Dragons greatly reduces the light that reaches its sensor - and this will not change when the OLPF is switched.

Any chance Red NYC can do this upgrade for us East Coast based guys? I'd love it if possible!

well what if I give them the self change kit lol? I just don't trust myself to do this basically, too risky...I'll tamper with macs and pcs, but sensors, ain't nobody got time for that lol!

?
Good you and RED knew this from the beginning! They also told us that about the fans... Could you tell us what's next?

Silly question maybe. Do the semi circle cut outs top and bottom make enough room for wider Leica M lenses when using the Leica M mount on an Epic or Scarlet dragon ?

Every Leica-M, Leica Brand lens fits. However, not every Leica-M lens will produce quality results due to the retrofocus and angle of incidence of the light hitting the sensor. You get "bucket smearing" on a couple of lenses especially in the field to edge coverage where you have a detailed center frame but a softer rest of the frame at wider apertures. The Leica-M 21mm f/1.4 Summilux is a good example of something you ideally wouldn't use. However, the 24mm f/1.4 Summilux is ruthlessly sharp.

Also, to add. The general Dragon OLPF and bushing design are made in such a way that most Angenieux can mount to the camera.
