  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

When will the ND versions of the OLPF's be available? Or is that something I imagined. I thought I read that somewhere but can't find it.

Imagined, though mentioned by others.

I am eagerly waiting for the Low Con 1/8 Slight Halation OLPF.

I know I haven't imagined that :-)

We need such an OLPF to mimic celluloid film as well as we can. At least as a starting point (added grain and LUTs can do the rest).

While I would enjoy such a thing, there are many, many possibilities out there with various type of haliation and low contrast. The big problem I see with making this "baked look" into an OLPF is that it's aesthetic will have compete with mists, pearlescents, etc....

I'd dig it for sure, but there's tons of in front of the lens filtration that gets you there today at various strengths to choose from.

Yeah just do it in the mattebox I say. More control.

The other issue with this approach is that wider shots need way less densities than with mediums and closeups.

I'd say it depends in the field you're working in. Some and most scenarios I shoot in wouldn't allow for the time or space to use a Matte Box.

Darn. Something like that might be nice. The motion mount is just a bit to pricey for me. Guess i'm sticking to screw on filters.

Finally arrived!

I guess you don't like the baked-in look of Alexa, then? Most of us do.

Nothing wrong with having this look "baked in". That's exactly the purpose of a specialty OLPF. You can always take it out if you don't like/need the effect for specific shots/scenes. AFAIK, if the effect is small, I'd have absolutely no problem leaving it in my camera at all times, if the images look more like 35mm film.

Of course there are multiple options that can be achieved traditionally in a matte-box. This OLPF will not "compete" with satin filters, promist filters, pearlescent filters etc etc etc. A Low Contrast 1/8 would be enough to simply make the image - especially the highlights - more filmic, with the tiniest amount of halation around the specular highlights. That's all we need - a basic, already proven (Alexa) starting point. Not a million different varieties of diffusion effects.

If one is looking for this 35mm film-like character in his/her images, then it's preferable to have the option to "bake-in" the look in the OLPF, rather than deal with filters, matteboxes etc even when you don't need them.

Does anyone know if the low Light OLPF the same as the original Dragon OLPF or did they enhance it at all?

Sorry if this has been covered already...

It's different. The LLO OLPF is version 2 of the original. They fixed the flaring problem the original OLPF had.

That's what I was hoping - thanks.

hey everyone. Was on the red website looking at the Scarlet Dragon upgrade page and I noticed they added a disclaimer that reads 'All new RED DRAGON cameras ship standard with the DSMC Skin Tone-Highlight OLPF. I ordered the low light OLPF while awaiting my Scarlet Dragon upgrade. Does this mean I still get the Skin tone OLPF with my upgrade as well? Would love to get a clear answer from someone at red.

just popped in to say thanks again Brent its a Blast!!

 back atcha!

New and upgraded (ie, going from M-X to DRAGON sensor) cameras ship with the SKIN TONE-HIGHLIGHT OLPF by default. You might be confusing that if people are going from fixed OLPF to swappable update, they got to choose what OLPF replaced their existing DRAGON OLPF.

So, yes, you would get your LLO OLPF you ordered a la carte plus the ST-H one as part of your upgrade.

Hi Brent!

Is RED working on the Low Contrast/Slight Halation OLPF as Jarred mentioned a while ago?
I hope you guys are still developing it!

Thanks!

They didn't completely fix it, it's improved, but not gone. The problem it had (and still does, only somewhat less so) is pink orbs around very bright objects in frame. A goldilocks future OLPF will, we hope fully solve this problem, as well as give the same low light capabilities as the current Low Light OLPF, but this OLPF is still in the future for now.

I'd like to cast a vote for one of these. It would be great if we could have the forthcoming Dragon Standard and also the option of a Dragon Standard Low Con.

I looooooove my motion mounts and appreciate everything RED has done to get rid of the need for matteboxes by allowing us to internalize filtration. I use my cameras in stripped down configurations all the time and would be very happy if we had this option, to keep it that way.

Just as 4 stops of ND is not always enough, having a low con standard doesn't eliminate absolutely the need for additional filters, but it has the potential to offer a better baseline starting point. I'm very much in favor.

anyone know of anything good shot recently on the LLO OLPF with dragon we could peek at? did a vimeo/youtube search and didnt come up with much.
