  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

I didnt lock my one when it went back to Red Europe. I was told that theft was own liability. Spent a long time speaking with different couriers etc and was told that theft wasn't covered unless i took out a implicit policy, which was crazy money. I ended up sending my one down via special delivery. When i send back Dragon for the OLPF swap ill probably take it down personally, as cheaper than some of the premiums i was quotes up here in north of Scotland.

What's RED Europe's policy difference in terms of theft etc?

I've had to keep hold of mine as I have a stills job that's got to be done before Xmas... so mine will be traveling to Pinewood in the New Year.

I don't have a first hand experience. But it looks like they are more "responsible" in regard of transportation insurance. Check it out with your European Bomb rep.

putting the OLPF in a generic cardboard box along with everything else without any sort of protection or enclosure is a BAD IDEA. My new OLPF was COVERED in dust.
I have to agree with Gavin, I had to take out the new lowlight OLPF 3 times and do sensor cleans before I had a clean image in the end
I agree as well, I was quite surprised honestly when I opened the DIY box, I thought for sure the olpf would be sealed alone! But it was already dusty.

I had help from the guys at the local Panavision shop and even their experienced technician said that was one nerve wrecking experience.
Seriously? It wasn't that hard. Cleaning the olpf was harder honestly, because everytime i cleaned it, it would get dusty again, it's so sensitive and attracts dust, not sure how changing it on location would go by, I want a cover piece for the sensor when changing the olpf on site (an idea was mentioned a few pages back).
Dragon and Low light OLPF is the prefect combination for me though, love the image performance.
The perfect combination, couldn't have said it any better.

EU: Most couriers charge proposterous amounts to cover loss (eg delivering a signed for parcel to the wrong address).

In the End - I went for the most expedited and trackable courier I could find with guaranteed delivery.

I used an old tatty box on the outside; Miles of tape and no easy way in.

The friend's Dragon was stolen in the Fedex truck with 4 other boxes 10 miles form home... Difficult to know if they where "pritty" boxes and therefore would have attracted the thief eye.

In Europe it's better to go to London directly and bring the camera @ Pinewood. Cheaper than most of the couriers and safer. Then Red Europe has some insurance to send it to Red US and send it back.

Thank you Santa, got my 2nd OLPF, Skin Tones Highlights, right before the bright lights of Christmas.

Much appreciated guys, this completes the kid.

I just got my Olpf changing kit with the low light Olpf . When I replace my current Olpf am I unable to put the Olpf that came with my camera back in? Do I need to order a special skin tone Olpf that can be put in?

Martin, did you already get the OLPF DIY replacement kit? Paid it already some time ago and have been waiting for it,but actually started to wonder whether it will arrive at all. Needed the low light OPLF now when the day light time is the shortest, but on the other hand, every day is already longer than the day before. ;-)

Any information from RED would be appreciated.

Per a RED rep, there are only a set number of DIY replacement kits and they are being reused. All DIY kits are currently out with customers. When a DIY kit gets returned to RED they are then shipped back out to the next customer in the queue.

Just got my email that my DIY kit is on its way
