  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

In regards to what this thread was originally about, Jim love the pics. Can't wait to see these in the flesh.

To all those who have questioned whether Jim will deliver the goods, all I can say is you can speculate all you want, you can be skeptical about what will be delivered for how much, and you can be angry that it has taken more time than you wanted to deliver, but you have to understand one thing - this is Jim's company. He's also customer #1. The company tagline of "everything is subject to change, count on it" may piss people off but I'm not sure what people don't get here, this has always been the case. No one is a holding a gun to anyone's head and saying you have to buy this camera. My guess is that Jim would rather you not buy the camera if you're going to come into this with a bad attitude. As far as I can tell he didn't start this company just to make money, he actually seems very much into filmmaking for the masses, providing cameras at fair prices so people can get access to quality that perhaps didn't seem possible before RED came along. He has taken a lot of crap since first announcing Red One a few years back. He's been called a scam, he's been attacked by professional DPs, he's been attacked by people who have nothing better to do than complain, etc. He's been relatively patient throughout the process, more than he probably needs to be, considering he could be on an island somewhere sipping some fine wine.

EDIT: Sorry Jeff, just realized you moved a lot of this discourse over to another thread. Feel free to move this if it's not appropriate to be here.

I have to support all that is said here. For us at the Tribe, we have our 14-20 year olds shooting with the RED. We have sat a couple teenagers on the RED rocket in the office when it first came out (now shifting to mobile RED Rockets).

Main Reason why we got our RED Camera and as of tomorrow we will Order an additional RED. Is that not everyone can afford the RED or an ARRI. So Like jim, I am doing technological philantrophy for folks. So they can be on an equal level playing field. But Im glad to see that Jim is on this path of sharing his expertise and creative curiosity to push a few envelopes out of his own personal endeavors such as ours.

I find it simply amazing how RED, in just a very few years has made 35mm-like acquisition affordable for the serious low budget film-maker, come out with a camera that is used both in Hollywood and the smallest of independent films, has made an incredible sensor, updated the firmware free over a dozen times (charging exactly zero times for it), developed software tools (again, charging exactly zero it), provided stellar customer service, keeps their cards relatively open, finds time to communicate with their core customers (and even tries to enter into discussion with plain bitchers). And then, rather than taking a breath and enjoy the view of what they've created (sweated for, lost countless hours of sleep over, labored restlessly for, ignored their families for), they go straight for the next amazing project, this time not just churning out a new camera, but a whole new philosophy. And not just new camera technology, a whole new body concept, new lenses, tools for a faster post work-flow, lots of add-ons, and now even (well, IF...) a fantastic mattebox.

Words fail me, but "I am impressed" is the closest I get with my limited grasp of the english language, and that covers about 7% of what I really try to express towards Jim and his amazing team.

And on a personal level: thank you for making it possible to shoot our documentary on a 4k camera that we own, rather than on a HD camera that we hire in.

I just can't stop looking at this thing. It's amazing.

You need to see it with its impulse engines engaged to truly appreciate what ILM has come up with.

I could so hang this on my living room wall...

If these renders get any sexier, you guys might have to start paying royalties to Solidworks or whatever.

Jim, I'm thinkin' you gotta bite the bullet and make the Mattebox. She just wouldn't look right with any other Mattebox stuck on the business end.

Sorry, there's just no two ways about it. :).

You guys have worked too hard to have your camera be an easel for someone else's logo.

I was really enjoying this thread until people started flinging the FUD around. So on that note, I have just trimmed nearly 100 posts out of this discussion. For those who really feel the need to continue that course of discussion, it can be located here, and please keep the FUD out of this thread.

Carry on...

I was really happy to log on a minute ago and find this thread like 5 pages shorter than last time I was here. and that includes like 2 pages of new posts! Good work man.

You know what would help keep this thread on topic? More renderings. :Angel_anim:

WIN.

I like the mattebox too. A super lightweight carbon fiber clamp on would be marvelous.

I wonder when the schedule and price-chart is ready?

I have better things to do than checking this forum just to encounter some new renderings and fanboy-posts bellow. That possible reads a lot harsher than it's intended, but something like a roadmaplink on red.com would be sweet.

Well, in that case, go do those better things and come back next month - the schedule is to be released later this month so it should be out by then.

Awesome... Fantastic... Ride on Jim... RaRa... But what's the true ISO of the Epic X and how about dynamic range? Look! up in the sky, its a scarlet, its a Genesis, No it's Alexa at 800 ASA... I'm glad the camera has modules that go together but the holy grail is ISO and Dynamic Range. Smaller lights, smaller lighting crews. Lower costs and less stress on overcast exteriors. I'm glad it won't be glossy...

We just rented a Red One for a shoot this week. Took it out and played with it over the weekend. After two days with it, I'm a true believer.

I've been saving up ever since the first announcement for Scarlet and set a new target for the S35 when that round of changes was announced. I've met that goal (based on those price points). Not an easy thing to do as a graduating college senior. If the prices have jumped up since then, that's OK, I'll work a little harder and longer to get there, because as I said, I'm a believer. I was before shooting with Red One, but I most definitely am now.

Jarred: "hey Jim, whats this button for?"
Jannard: "don't press it yet.....ahhhh"
NASA: "Will you just launch FFS"
Jannard: "Copy that, we are on our way"

There are those that make something from whatever they have and others who complain about what they don't get...

Jim

There should be a thread only dedicated to the great lessons that Jim shares with us out of his anger towards those humans that constantly feel unsatisfied.

I honestly appreciate him reminding me his vision of life and where it has taken him.

Will hold my comments until we see what I am sure will be a pleasant surprise by the end of the month. On some friday night I suppose. :001_cool:

In film school we had battered Arri ST's that had been in use since WWII. Once I found a missing screw in one of the mags and alerted the camera dep't to the light leak it caused. Their reply: "Yes we know".

But somehow we managed to make films. The mantra was: If you can make films with these cameras, you can make films with any camera.

And boy, do I aprechiate REDs offerings...
