  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

Scarlet 3k bitrates

Scarlet 3k bitrates

Rado, even the "little" 3K 2/3" Scarlet will record more data/sec then current RED ONE. If anything we would need RED Rocket™ MAXI...

 Peter

I believe not, the higher bitrates are to provide for the higher frame rates and the higher resolutions. I'm pretty sure the 3k Scarlet will have, as an option, an even lower bit rate than the RC28, or what would be the equivalent for a 3k resolution.

Cheers,
Damien

Slightly off topic, but something I was wondering - I've seen a lot of people looking into the viewfinder, but was there actually any picture on it? Was it some sample image or video, or just a RED logo, or was it just blank?

I also looked through the new BOMB EVF ( ...2 pictures of me in this thread :w00t:) and what you could see was a good looking color chart. I did not recognize a "rainbow effect" in my quick view.

3.5mm audio inputs on the brain has been known for a long time... and those being audio cables has been surmised by a number of folks (yours truly included) shortly after the Gunner was first posted.

-sc

Steve--indeed, the key word being "surmised". (It was your post from the "Control" thread that alerted me--it certainly was not my intention to plagiarise.) Jarred's comment seems to cement in the purpose of the Red Gun, that's all I'm suggesting  Cannot wait for the delivery schedule...!

Hi Jim. Love design!

Do you think it will be possible to upgrade the sensor of the Epic-X to a FF35 when that sensor comes out? I would like to be able to uprade in the future without having to buy a whole new brain.

/Christian

Hahaha seriously? You're complaining about having to buy a "whole" new brain. In reference to the most modular camera system ever. Dude.

Looking good!!

Any idea on approximate range of the redmote? I believe its wireless correct?

Thanks
Ryan

Welcome Ryan! Long time lurker...

100 feet is the word on the street. Wireless.

Thanks, Yeah spent a lot of time reading not much writing :)
Im doing some aerial work with remote control helicopters so wanting to see what the best way to hit record when the camera is a few hundred meters away :) wireless trigger is easy enough but if i can change the settings and flip to stills thats always nice too :) Also when operating steadicam when I get a lazy DOP sitting back with the directors monitor messing with my settings while im flying around busting my back :)

CF's are fantastic but I like having options no matter what, it's not going to harm anything is it?

I'm absolutely fine with that in principles. It's just than I don't understand the advantage in inferior solutions. Otherwise, I'd love to have the perforated cards option as well.
If Red will add a SD option, i'd be happy. No, well, I think it would be indifferent to me, actually, since I am not going to use them, but I'd be happy anyway if some one finds an advantage in using them rather them using CF. No, wait: why should I be happy in particular? I would be just as like being happy because some one found advantage in buying a Suzuki rather than a Kawasaki. It does't mean anything to me, really. I don't care what motorbike someone prefers to ride. If something makes you happy, that's fine. But I want to see what the trade off is, since there are always trade off, is it?
i think that, if you spend, say, 30,000$ or even if it was 10,000$ on a camera system, you'd want your cards to be the best format, not a lower one. Large capacity and robust, not otherwise. But I have absolutely nothing agaist options. I like options. (If they turn out to be really options, convenient and handy). Why not?

If I go to the Sahara, of course if underwear shops where available it would be better than if they where not, but I don't think I am going to ever need to buy pants in the Sahara, because I'm 100% sure I would arrive there with enough pair of pants, and I'd rather worry about water, so I can clean my pants or have them clean by the best professional film directors of the set. A awful lot of possibilities to be found on location tends to be needed manly by less organized people. But again, I have nothing against anyone who may find himself catapulted to a location having had too short time for planning, and surely anyone may forgot to bring enough CF cards and he might just find Red-ready SDs cards in a grotto. (Just as he might only find HI-8 tapes. This is a very interesting speculation. Should a professional photographer who is plainning a travel to South Pole discard his medium format camera because 35mm film are generally more available than 6x6? I have no idea, but If I was the man, I'd simply bring what I need and not be LIMITED to what I MAY or MAY NOT find on location. Becase as much as what a camera wants, also what may be available on location, is a limitation). A good artist or man may deserve more chances so options may be useful. So, every option may be not sacred but at least good. Let's see the development of this clever and option-rich camera system...

And yes, I have had CF cards stolen in a relatively remote location.

fucking bastards.
Unless they were really poor people, of course. In this case: little bastards.

The only available media was SD

Okay, I agree. Now I also would like to be able to use SDs. You never now... these days.
But I really believe that the number of hands to be cut should be proportionated to the value of the stolen goods. We can't compare apples to cards. The one who steals an apple may be forgiven or given a little punishment, but the one who steals a flash card (stopping a valuable production with bad security) has a vicious mind because for him, staling hi-tech = stealing more money.

You should bring some extra cards because what's the difference in card that is brought with you from home and a card that is purchased on location? both can be stolen). And what about if someone steals - instead of a humble card... the camera itself? a lens? batteries? Then why use PL lenses that are not available anyware? just use Nikon lenses which are easier to find. You don't want your lenses or anything to be stolen, so you lock them and always keep them under your control. Just do it the same with your little cards. If you can't hide 8 flash cards in your jacket, how can you take care of all the the other tools?
sorry for the long post (as usual)

Right...no studs because it will bolt, but I think this thing has to have electronics. I'm guessing bolts plus the two contact points (data and power.) Otherwise everything downstream of the adapter plate wouldn't have any way to talk to the brain, right?
Peace,

-Harry

Yes it bolts on and then in turn provides recepticles for the mating studs for the piggy-back connectors, that's that what I meant by "mechanical interface".

And "active electronics" means something other than just passive data connectors.

The smaller battery also fits the handle...

Jim

It would be great though to have a hot-swapable more compact version of the battery module. This would greatly reduce the weight and size for those "mid-weight" configuration where hot-swapping is required...

Just a thought...

 Peter

I don't understand the advantage in inferior solutions.

As mentioned earlier, SD cards are so cheap you could use them like tape: shoot once, put to archive. Not so with CF cards, currently at least.

Of course, the whole issue is moot, unless there's fast / reliable enough SD cards available... not sure if there are.

Peter- are you aware the batteries themselves are hot-swappable? If you need less weight you could only mount 2 as opposed to four.

HD evolution

HD evolution

When Scarlet was first announced, it's specs were WAY ahead of anything that was being offered in the market at that time, but things are moving faster these days.

Remember how much did it take to jump from SD to 720p HDV? Years. Then the jump from 720p to 1080i cameras took less than a year, and then to 1080p only months.

I think that's not accurate. At least in broadcast, cameras in 720p format came out AFTER cameras in 1080i.

But as 1080i sales remained in the tank, it was time to try something else. Once proven there was an HD market 1080i got a second chance, but when it failed again, manufacturers thought that 1080p might do the trick. Since then we have had pixel-shifting, up-conversion, 1440 horizontal sampling, 1-chip 1920 x 1080 CMOS sensors, and now line-skip DSLR downconversion pretending to be 1080p.

So slow progress. Now you may say I'm biased; but you can judge the quality difference for yourself when Scarlet is here.

It was always said that RedCode 100 wasn't it's actual data rate. So it could of been what we know now as Redcode 42.

I believe that Rado is referring to the REDcode associated with the FF35 Scarlet which is REDcode 100.

From the Red NAB 2008 brochure's description of the original 3K Scarlet: "Up to 100 MB/sec REDCODE RAW and RGB recording to dual compact flash." Sounds like the actual data rate to me. But according to Jim Jannard,
Jannard said:
REDCODE is a reference number to maximum data rate of the camera electronics. If you shoot higher frame rates, the data rate doesn't go higher than the maximum. Hence, a higher number REDCODE will do less compression at higher frame rates.
So 2/3-inch Scarlet's maximum data rate was originally specced at 100 MB/sec; Jim's quote seems to indicate it's now 42 MB/sec.

Will epic-x have a Canon EF lens mount option when it comes out or soon after? It doesn't look like the birger mount will migrate over.

Edit:

Ok, found the answer to lens mount option, still wondering if it will be with release of the camera?

Epic will have support (electronic) for both Nikon and Canon (and others)...
