  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Incredible...

Epic at IBC Amsterdam, September 12, 2009.

Slightly off topic, but something I was wondering - I've seen a lot of people looking into the viewfinder, but was there actually any picture on it? Was it some sample image or video, or just a RED logo, or was it just blank?

I would adore shooting on SD cards. And module pricing/production capability is really where the game is at for me at the moment. But all in good time.

can't you afford CF cards? why should SD cards be preferred? They are fragile, and too small, you can loose them in your own pocket. Also: lower capacity (let's say: half)
For movies, I think CF card is a much better format than SD.

So Jim, do I still buy my RED ONE or hold off on the order?

no need to hold off man. you get the Red One camera or full system. after you can tread with the epic x ( special version ) for the same amount that you buy red one. it's a damn good deal!!! Right? jim.

Edit: for the same amount, i mean you can get the same amount from the red one and you add some more to get epic x.

you could see a color test chart.

SD cards are limited in data transfer speed by the number of pins, too, isn't that correct? Their 9-pin interface is inherently inferior to the 50-pin interface of the CF design, from what I've read.

RED's got it under control. No need to nitpick about what flavor of solid state memory they support. That's as silly as me poking fun at them for looking like spaceships out of New World movies. As long as they work as advertised the way they look or what kind of memory you're recording to becomes kind of irrelevant. I own a couple of butt-ugly still cameras that also happen to take mercury batteries that are illegal in the United States, but they work great, so all is forgiven.

Price, availability, options. I've shot in locations where you could only find SD cards in the nearest town before and that can be a life saver...

Besides, isn't the whole DSMC ethos about shooting what you want how you want? SD cards with the correct write speed are just as legitimate as CF cards. And no, I've never lost an SD card:huh:

RED stuff may be better, but for the price you can't beat the image quality of the 5D mark 2. Due mainly to a sensor the size of a full frame of 35mm film.

I thought the Canon only records 1920x1080, which means only a fraction of the 35mm area; full frame for still pictures, but much less for motion pictures.

Canon scales the full sensor to 1080P, not crop. But they don't do it very well.

DSMCTM stands for Digital Stills and Motion Camera... and by our definition, both need to be RAW (since we made it up, we make the rules). Last time I looked, none of the DSLRs have RAW motion... so they don't qualify. Call them something else.

Thanks.

Jim

hahaha, actually they do after a small-ish modification :smash: and can achieve a neck snapping 0.3 fps.

Here is a clip originally shot with Canon 50D, Master Prime 14mm in uncompressed RAW 4.7k at 0.3fps::wink5:

edit: BTW, that's my new office.

Not necessarily - Compact Flash uses a parallel interface (ATA) while SD is serial, so SD could probably go faster if you used fast enough memory chips...

curious to know what will happen to all the companies that are making accessories right now for the R1. Cant imagine Element Technica is too pleased. But who knows? Perhaps all the ET stuff will work with EPIC.

I don't think that thousands of Red Ones operating worldwide are going to go into the dustbin just because the Epic will have a higher performance. After the investments, most of them will be used since it's possible, because it's just logical. And those owners will go on buying both Reds and third party accessories... possibly forever. New markets open up, but older ones don't necessarily close down, if products are good and worthwhile. Not soon, at least.
And this is good.

With the new system will we still be able to choose different Redcodes? For instance if I have a S35 will I be able to shoot something in RC36 or RC28 still?
