  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IN camera Preset LOOK, I know I will get killed for this

Was on set today with an Epic and dialed in a look for client. Reminded me of this post =) The DP wanted it to look a bit more contrasty. We were B cam to an Alexa =/ Something like contrast +.2 FLUT -.1 Shadow -.2

Hey Greg thanks for what all your doing. I just got my scarlet so I'm learning the ends & outs of my camera right now but I will attempt to put some looks up in a couple weeks. By the way, have you figured out how to get this look http://vimeo.com/33520571 for the scarlet yet? I'm really loving this look as well!

Ok I see, everyone dropped the ball in camera looks, I think its time to get back at it :) Its bothering me why can't we have a LUT in Redcine , however we can create and export LOOKS,
So where there is not many looks out there? Selfish DP & EDITORS? I'm going for it :)

Im in paris and we shoot negative. As in black is white an white is black... The dit was struggling to create a lut for the 4 alexa´s we are using. But for my weapon I just sent a Facebook message to Mr foolcontrol Michael and viola he told me the trick to make the curve go totally opposite gives a perfect negated image.. And the raw is still intact. Took a bit of time for the DIT to understand that my little camera could record both raw and flip flopped colors negated BW as 2k or 4k prores on the side at the same time. :)

Those fucking alexa minis are a joke. High speed and you are instantly down to 2k above 30fps as they tell me. I thought that was a joke but no.

I hate to be a party pooper but a cosmetic TVC such as this example has more than likely had an extensive and professional grade applied to it to help create this look. A simple camera LUT would never get there on its own. Especially this kind of super contrast would need to be managed shot by shot in the grade. I also imagine the girls skin got a lot of attention in the grade. A LUT may give you a look that is a rough facsimile but there in no magic LUT although if you find one please send it my way.

About to create a LUT for an upcoming TV Drama and I will need to collect references then hire a professional colorist to build the LUT then test it then probably take the results back to the colorist for a tweak so it's a time consuming and expensive business to build good LUTS and probably why people keep them out at best sell them.

Also interested in why people are adjusting the FLUT setting as opposed to the ASA?

IN camera Preset LOOK, I know I will get killed for this :) YES I KNOW RAW RAW RAW, I love RAW, but sometimes there is no need for IT, only sometimes :).
Everyone from another side of the game (Sony Canon etc...) , are saying you can't get a good image straight out of your red, its flat, it's all in post, hour and hours. I think that is BSSSSS. SO i had PROVE IT.

I have created a look in my camera, contrast, saturation, Flut control, and white balance etc, RED color 3 and here are the results, no grading no color correcting, straight transfer. This just me running around don't expect Janusz Kaminski here :)

Was the video taken down from video?

I think the in-camera looks is one of the more appealing improvements in going from DSMC to DSMC2, especially since it's handled Red-style... in that you can have your look + eat it too. I mean, your cake... since the "baked in" look is really just a lut that's attached to your raw file, so you or your colorist can toss if you want, but for projects that require faster turnaround or don't have budget for color grading, you bake-in a look and hand it off.

Win-win!
