  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Importing LUTs in Red Dragon

Hello,

How do you import custom LUTs in the Red Dragon?

Thanks!

You can NOT import custom 3D LUTs into the Red Dragon - and I'm pretty damn sure you never will be able to do it - as I suspect it's a hardware limitation - or they would have already enabled it.

You CAN import a "LOOK" based on R3D RAW processing parameters - not the same thing as a 3D LUT at all - and not as powerful - but more powerful than a CDL.

Currently - the BEST option you have for 3D LUTs on the Dragon is to add them in the signal chain with a Fujifilm IS-mini LUT Box.

I did say ... "currently" :)

Can we take a more complex 3D LUT (film emulation LUT, for example) and ONLY save its contrast curve? Turn it into a very simple LOOK file (basically a 1D LUT) and load THAT into the camera?

Just the contrast curve, not the color transformations, obviously, since the camera doesn't support complex 3D LUTs.
But a film emulation contrast curve alone could be useful to have in camera.

Is that possible?

There's nothing stopping you from generating a Look with just a Curve adjustment and uploading it to the camera.

Currently the Red ecosystem supports "Looks" and you can transfer those into the body or use them straight in REDCINE-X PRO. I've found in my research most who "need" 3D LUT support would like it going to off board recorders, some of which support 3D LUTs on the recorder itself.

Most of my shoots go through DRAGONcolor/REDgamma4, but on a couple of gigs I used my bag of about 25 Looks for various situations like Day For Night, Low Con, Bleach Bypass, Client Approved, etc.... to load into the Epic Dragon.

Just generate the Look in REDCINE-X PRO and import it to the camera.

If it can be expressed with the 5 curve points that RED gives you yes. So practically speaking no.

What Gavin said.

You are not gonna get very close to the contrast transform that is in a 3D film emulation with just an in-camera curve. It is GREAT to have in-camera curves - I kicked and screamed for them for a long time - and it really gives you some great in-camera paint power. But it's NOT really in the ball park of how a 3D film stock emulation LUT can map contrast.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Will I be able to see the imported look in the camera via a director's monitor?

thanks again.

Yes.

You just need to assign that look to the appropriate feed. hDMI or SDI.
