  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Turn it on

All these new handheld rigs look awesome but i have seen none with a run on/off switch in the handle. For fast doco work the run button on the camera is slow as your hands have to come off the handle or lens leaving a few seconds at the start of each shot without full control. Is there a solution out there like the VF Origo for the Red One for the Epic and Scarlet?

Spacecam's Sync Bob Remote Rec works with Epic and Scarlet. You can use variable cable length depending on the use.

Good to see there is a solution but expensive if you include The Sync Bob or cable set. For me though it's the size that's the major drawback. Something like the VF origo could be attached to a handle or grip and was small enough not to interfere. An integrated handle with switch would be good. Famous last words but how hard could a on/off switch be?

Andy,

What are the dimensions of your switch and is there a 1/4" and or any mounting point For the chocolate bar? I am hoping to mount the trigger on my handgrip so I can use my thumb to activate like most broadcast cameras?

Jared Roessler, equipment chieftain and gaffer / electric god at B2Pro, has made a remote start / stop for our clients. Maybe you can persuade him to build you another one.

An AC on a production maybe holding the remote start/stop device for most of the shooting day, for instance 10 hours. It is important that it be comfortable to the touch without sharp corners and blend into the hand. The hand really determines size as do the AA batteries. Button type batteries are not always available and have limited life. The whole thing must be ergonomically correct and engineered correctly with polarity and short protection, with a warning indication for the replacement of batteries. Devices using more than two cells should be avoided as an overvoltage situation can cause damage to the camera. In the final analysis you can trigger remote record/start/stop with gaffer tape holding together two battery cells and some old lamp chord but knowing Red users we do not feel that they want to go that route.
The SpaceCam remote is CNC machined from solid aluminum billet and hand polished before anodizing and laser engraving. It contains a purpose design circuit board that monitors battery condition and guards against polarity reversal of signal to the camera. In comes with a lanyard. It also incorporates two quarter 20 threaded inserts for mounting on pan bars or virtually anywhere that one can shove a quarter twenty screw through.
Cost? Well, yes some people will be running to Radio Shack and pick up a battery holder, put it into a plastic box and be proud of themselves...but that is not a serious or safe piece of production equipment.

Why not just use a DSMC Sidehandle with the Outrigger handle and press a REC button there? It's right under your index finger.

you could attach a redmote to the end of your handle, at least within reach of your thumb.

No 1/4" tap for this one, and the dimensions are 3.15"x2.13", so a very comfortable handheld size. We are working on something very special coming out in a couple months that is much smaller.

I envision a handle with a rosette on one end and a screw off battery cap on the other end with a built in trigger for your index finger at the top of the handle. Maybe with a little lip to separate your finger from the trigger while shooting.

This is not what I was suggesting. Naturally people who are not experienced should not attempt to construct anything to connect to a RED camera. Personally, I have a degree in electrical engineering and would be confident to develop a piece of equipment which wouldn't damage the camera and would suit my needs. Perhaps users have a need to trigger recording over serial or IP, perhaps triggered at a specific time or by changes in sound or light levels? Sometimes a well made custom device is the only solution.

There seems to be some high quality alternatives out there but all designed for a camera assistant to operate. I may have to wait for a small ENG "style" trigger or a handle with a trigger. I would imagine a big demand for such a device as it would be handy for all types of production.
