  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know most of you guys know how obsessed I am about black shading and fan control. So, I just want to point out one key change in WEAPON.

On the EPIC/SCARLET - your "target temp" in fan control is the CORE TEMP - not the sensor temp.

On the WEAPON - your "target temp" in the fan control is the SENSOR TEMP.

It can screw you up if you don't know this since the UI is exactly the same and there is no indication that it is now sensor temp instead of core temp.

It SHOULD be obvious to you since it will default to something like 38 degrees instead of 65 - but I'm sure some folks are gonna screw the pooch on this - so please take note of the change.

So what should the correct sensor temp be for best results I wonder? I usually keep my Core temp at 70 on Epic...

38? 40?

There isn't really a "correct" sensor temp - 38 or 40 is just fine - we've shot 50+. What matters is that you maintain a constant sensor temp - and you have a black calibration for that temp. Which is very easy using adaptive fan setting and proper target.

It is a lot more logical to set a target for the SENSOR TEMP the way they are doing it in WEAPON - with EPIC/SCARLET - you have to just tell yourself - "the CORE temp effects the SENSOR temp" - and let adaptive mode manipulate the core temp which then effects the sensor temp :)

But it's all about MAINTAINING a CONSTANT sensor temp. (and having an optimal black shade profile for that temp and exposure time (aka shutter speed).

It's all about STAYING IN DEFAULT ADAPTIVE FAN MODE and taking the time to run the auto black shade at camera prep :-p

Now just need to find a good shoulder mount solution that won't block those new vents in the back of the camera ;-)

I wonder if the Weapon is quieter than the Epic. None could so far show us a comparative test.

Anyone?

Pat

It feels much quieter.
sorry have no comparative test but maybe Mark will find time to do one.

it is important to let the camera get up to temp before you start the shading process. as stated on an earlier post, it takes about 30 minutes for the auto shade to run through everything. so be prepared for about 40 minutes total time to set this up. good news is once you do it , the camera is good to go all day if not longer.

the best way in my opinion to get the camera up to temp is to put a ssd card in and roll...in 3 to 4 minute it should be up to temp.

Definitely much quieter! In a room that was 78F degrees, I found that setting Weapon's sensor to 42 degrees stayed very very quiet consistently. That placed the core temp around 60-72. Need to compare more, but sounded like the Epic's fans at 30%. This is a very quiet camera! At 100%, the new fans sound like Epic at 50-60%. Thrilled with the improvement! Will hear much less complaining from sound guys. ;)

Great note Mark. Its good to emphasize this point.

That's great news! Thanks. Can I quote you in a sound forum? (Jwsoundgroup)
