  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - Dragon Epic and Scarlet Firmware V5.1.14 BETA

Also another vote for manual fan control. Being able to keep it in a steady state for room tone etc. on long interviews is a must.

Love the new features!

I'm finding that after a restart some settings which used to hold consistently once set, like overlays on external hdmi monitors, need to be reset over and over.

Is there a solution for this? Do I need to make a preset for those types of elements now?

+1 for manual fan control. Consistency of fan noise while shooting is important for cleaning it out in post.

Fantastic new build, RED! Thank you so much!

A warmed up camera in adaptive mode has a stable noise output, and does a better job than the user of balancing minimum noise with satisfactory cooling.

I can no longer see an argument for manual mode, myself as it would negatively affect warmup and black shading, while in all probability giving less than optimum noise... Plus it adds workload and distraction for the op if small changes are needed during long takes.

Hi guys,

my Scarlet was just on a shoot today (indoors) with the Beta-firmware and the fan in adaptive mode. After two 2x64gb it was overheated and caused a series of error messages. It simply wouldn't record. In the heat of the moment I rolled back to 4.0.18 and right now everything is running smoothly again (with the fan in Auto).

Just a heads up!

Well Normandy & England are pretty cold places to film..........

Great upgrade!!! Unfortunately I had to roll back to 4.0.18, as the camera started behaving quite strangely (Scarlet): all menu settings and icons suddenly disappeared, just leaving the black frame around the image (tried rebooting the camera, but still the same problem). Initially, I thought the camera had frozen, but then I realized it hadn't actually. I hit record and the camera seemed to record.
Love the rack focus mode and great to have 50 fps at 3K. As soon as I finish a shoot this week, I'll try to upgrade again. In case the bug persists, I'll send a log file.

Cheers!!!

Environmental temperature makes no difference; stable thermostatically controlled temperature and hence stable fan speed is going to be done better by adaptive mode, once target temp is achieved, than by user guesswork in manual mode. Manual mode also leaves open the possibility of getting yourself in trouble with runaway temps, incorrect blackshade, sudden fan noise... Why make life harder?

The overlay settings (for any monitor) should be persistent across boots. What exactly are you setting and what are they reset to?

John, with respect that is not a terribly strong argument. Manual mode has been on the Epic since the beginning. I have used it continuously and have got it down to a fine art. I have no problem with you or any one else using adaptive mode or any other method they choose to keep their cameras cool. However, why on earth actually go to the trouble of actualiy taking it away from people who prefer to use it? Is it such a hassle just to leave it on there?

LOVING this build. Scarlet revamped, really. Quicker, sexier, etc..
Thanks Jarred and family!!
And not only 50 but 60 at 3K WS....

Adaptive by default is set to a 65 target. Should I leave it there?
I used to use the 70 setting, lately, and I'd like to keep that kind of silent operation. But if RED put 65 as default there should be a reason, isn't it?
Too tempting not to use it. I'll be in studio tomorrow so ready to go back quickly, but are there KNOWN bugs??

We have now more than one set of fans, it's no longer the same for everyone. People combine them wildly (old front + new top for example), so it might need a bit more testing to know what are safe and good settings there. People said 25% with new fans is louder than with old fans (makes sense) but enabling lower speeds could be dangerous with the standard-fans...

Anyway, its a beta, one that probably shares a good amount of code with Dragon hardware, that might be another reason why it's currently not there.

I can assure you that with 40 degrees celsius ambient temperature, the fans will run loudly in adaptive as time goes by, adaptive works very well when it's cooler. By having the standby fans run at up to 100%, you can keep the temperature under control & green T during record. Why do I use manual? Because when shooting sound it can be better. If I am not shooting sound then adaptive is fine.

Edit, of course if I could increase the standby speed to 100% in quiet record, then that would also work .

Are you sure your menus aren't just set to auto-hide? It's a new feature in v5.
