  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

While this is cool. A depth map could be useful. I've used them to limited sucess inside AE from 3D renders now and then. But unless I misunderstand the technology, while a depth map might allow you to pull mattes , these moves will be far from perfect as the mattes will all have hard edges won't they? And you would still need roto/key to deal with semi transparent elements like hair/motion blur? Granted, might make your roto MUCH faster, but still not going to eliminate it. But again, perhaps I misunderstand.

Beyond pulling mattes, and depending on how the data is stored/utlized, depth maps can be used for CG tracking and 3D object placement. Not to mention realistic volumetric effects like fog, dust, or smoke within a scene. We've used LIDAR, Surphaser, and human measured survey data for a great deal of things. There's a lot of set data captured on larger budget features involving many details about the camera angle, height, lens, lens focus distance, etc.... Getting more of this information "in camera" can save time and money on these productions. Also, it can be useful when creating virtual cameras on heavy CG background productions. There's a million things you can use the data for.

RED People, why did you reveal this ? You are like kids...this is great.. But please, think about those monsters(Sony,Canon,etc..) who just wait and steal ideas...
when I think again, ignore them totally, they will crush themselves anyway if they dont change themselves soon ..

Go ahead...And tell us if we can assist in any way..I know sounds ridicilous but I feel like I am not doing anything in this Redvolution...

you guys are too much... excited to see and hear and touch everything you've got in store

If the camera is capable of capturing depth map of the scene, that means one will be able to place new, virtually indistinguishable from the real light source lights in the scene.... Presto- realistic, virtual relighting in post. Been waiting for that missing technology forever...

Or you could just hire somebody who knows what they are doing to light it right in the first place! A camera that doesn't need proper lighting or a focus puller - Do Not Like!

The technologies mentioned in this thread sound like they have amazing potential, but fixing poorly shot footage in post should be the least of anyone's concern.

You should take a page out of Apple's play book and hide a clue in the invite to the November 3rd launch event.

Here's hoping that the ability to capture 3d depth information will be integrated into some sort of "Self Awareness" module for the Epic that records ALL available shot data, including lens, height, angles, focus, zoom, timecode, gps coordinates, weather, fog-density, etc.

My head nearly exploded when I read Jim's post about multiple focus and depth map features. Yeah, I'm talking The Departed head blood blast, right out of the back of my skull. I've suggested that feature (depth map) a few times, but always knew (thought) I was being completely unrealistic. This is an awesome feature. I'm talking revolutionarily ground breaking. I mean, if it's what I'm thinking of, we're talking about a fundamental change on how FX movies are currently made, ie with enormous green/blue screens. I still see big budget movies with bad green/blue screen work, and it takes me right out of the movie. If the depth map feature is that feature, then that would be like inventing a new kind of wheel.

I also realize it might be a feature specifically connected the multiple focus, and while that is still super cool, I just don't know much about it. I've seen the Lytros demos, and the Canon demo, but that's about all I know of it.

You guys, the people of Red, are completely amazing. Keep it up.

Not familiar with the Apple play book...anyway, can't make it.

I took a job on a desolate area of Venezuela on the 3rd of november: I will have to see the announcement and struggle to log in the Red Store and buy my Scarlet from the middle of a dessert around midnight with a mobile modem!

Lots of new stuff... but Jarred won't let me. :-)

Jim

As long there is a Redmote Pro involved it's all good ; )
Seriously, a Redmote Pro that really works and I mean Pro like, will change the landscape again in a big way.
Bring it sooner than later and promote it well and you will have 10 thousand customers more in a second.

A got my Canon Mount and I must say it is worth every penny. Killer product. Now put FF capabilities in it and you have the biggest thing since well, the RED One.

Thanks for kicking ass guys.

Tim

So maybe the depth of field issue on a 2/3" will be a bit of a non issue after all! This is mind boggling technology!
I absolutely love the idea of a 3K 2/3" sensor, interchangeable lens Scarlet Cinema, with at least 3 Red Mini Primes. I do hope that is what will be announced on 3rd November (to complement the fixed lens).
This is the stuff that dreams are made of!
