  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I feel a little better about not knowing the release date....

Just FYI, Red technically wasn't at NAB this year... they were in Vegas, but they didn't have a booth, they had their own party. So I wouldn't hold them to anything as specific as the dates for next years NAB.

Im just dying to get my hands on a red handle

I'm sure they will have a scarlet out by January but there will be new competitor cameras out by then also. You can be sure than Panasonic will use that 4/3 sensor in it's new video cams. All they need is that with professional options and avc intra codec under 5k and you have serious competitor.

So if RED does get that scarlet out in summer they will be king!

Seems they are hard at work since, they are very silent. It wasn't that long ago people didn't think the RedOne was real. We will see them, sooner or later. My best guess is later this year.

Or it means that they don't want to tell you it's going to be another year... because then half the people waiting for scarlet will jump ship and be less likely to buy when it's released. I'm not saying it's what I believe, but it's a possibility...

I simply don't think that the competition will have the modularity of the RED.

Or the cutomer-focus mindset.

New firmware/features/tools for the Red One this long after launch? For free?

What did it for me was the full value trade in policy for the Red ONE to Epic. Insane.............ly awesome

Here's my prediction. Very close to or shortly after the scarlet release one of the competitors will announce early specs for a new camera that's not quite done yet. It'll be comparable to Scarlet specs. Comparable enough to cause Scarlet buyers to pause just for a moment.

What's the moral of this story? You tell me ...

Yes... comparable specs, but nowhere near comparable prices. Plus I'll bet the specs for the Scarlet will be even better than what is already posted.

The competition will have a more expensive camera with lesser specs in development.

I agree the scarlet specs are incredible, ESPECIALLY for the price!

And I hate to beat the dead horse, but modularity people!

IBC '09 is my bet for S35...at least for Red One owners to put their order in...it's going to be a real party for all those that get to see it...

As for competition...they can't offer it for the price RED can because of the sheer issue with R&D, Red is thinking like Apple does.selling tomorrows product today makes money...simple...Canon or Sony or Jvc don't think like this, they feel that they could beat out RED with their current line up and their loyal customer base...

HA!wait for the fixed lens to hit the market and we'll then see about loyalty ;P

I think we all struggle cause we keep seeing specs, keep seeing pictures, and keep postulating different possibilities with the scarlet, then come to the realization that we have no idea when it will be here lol...

But it was that annoyance that led to nagging, which led us to motivate Jim to change the policy of almost full disclosure... :frown2:

And I've almost started another thread about that.

We've heard very little in the way of recent camera development/production direction and milestones since that announcement.

Previously, I think we would have had much more visibility in the process. I blame the whiners and those who couldn't keep themselves in check. Funny... I only expect to have that problem with my children, not the "adults" that I assume frequent this forum.

I'll also point out that we aren't getting a camera any faster or cheaper. We just are much more in the dark than we otherwise would have been. Not to mention, if there was some interim detail that might have been something you would have liked to provide feedback on (in a constructive way), we've lost that too.

Good job, kids.

Sorry about the the minor thread hi-jack, Mike.

I feel the same as many of you. I am still pretty young, and just about to get into the film industry. I am waiting for the Scarlet due to its modular nature, and its stellar performance (on paper, and from what I've seen from other RED), as that's the equipment I want to start on.
Unless you want to be a cameraman, you should start NOW on whatever format you can afford to shoot on. Some great videos I've seen were shot on DV or worse.
It's still about the story. Transformers: ROTFL was shot on 35 MM+. It didn't prevent people from being bored. In the end if you make a good movie it will be 'who made this' that's the important question, not 'what was it shot on'?

Steve,

I completely agree. It was a catch 22, because we would get minor updates, (mind you, not huge ones all the time, but updates none the less), and I think in a way this frustrated people.

NOW we really have not the slightest idea.... Are they still finishing off the prototypes? or are they taping the boxes up for shipment, we have NO idea.

I think a few impatient portions of the consumer base are responsible for taking away one of many features that made RED standout from the competition, in this case full disclosure.

And I also agree with the last post, I have borrowed a friends 1080 P canon camcorder (HG20) to start filming some stuff for film classes. Surprisingly actually it's not that bad. The AVCHD format sure does give the core i7 a run for the money, but it's not TOO bad. When a scarlet comes out, I will get it, until then... I have to film what I can...

uhm, i guess it's just partly because of that.
Mostly i think it's due to the fact that disclosing too much in terms of specs etc. was giving too much advantage to competitors who have bigger capitals and resources that make them able to react fast.
As an example now Nokia makes iPhone clones, but if Apple had discosed sooner iPhone specs long before, Nokia could have had released clones alot earlier ... now the industry knows RED is not a joke or vapor, so now they're ready to react fast. An "announced revolution" can work just once, when your enemy thinks you're not a menace.
Think of the cuban revolution and how Che got killed in Bolivia. He could fool the US once, not twice.

That's true, I was just going off Jim's semi-frustrated post, in RECON

The Moral is, the customer wins. Period.

If nothing else, the REDvolution will work to put better products in our hands a t better prices. DV tapes did the exact same thing 10odd years ago. Think about where you would have been as a filmmaker without DV. Some of us would be shooting crappy looking video, others scrounging their pennies together to buy 16mm filmstock, still others, like myself, would never have even had a viable avenue from which to start and would not be filmmakers at all. You would have had a sub-par product, or no money in your pockets.

Now in a few years we'll get to ask ourselves the same question about RED. We're actually pretty lucky to get to be some of the frontrunners of the REDvolution. So be patient :)
