  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I feel a little better about not knowing the release date....

Does it look good? yes, but nowhere NEAR to what the Scarlet will be able to achieve.

To me, Scarlet is more of a full blown motion camera that can take amazing stills...

but that's what I mean - the so often called soccer mom doesn't know the difference between your T1 shot and the quality the scarlet will achieve (as we hope) ...

Where is this competition people speak of? I haven't seen it. I don't own a RED so I'm not a RED fanboy, I just shoot on my HVX200s, which get the job done for what I've done, I've been selected to 25 film festivals in my short time as a director and I'm a multi-award winning director now, so it's not about the tools as much as it is about surrounding yourself with great people and having a creative vision and the means to make it happen, basically. That being said, I wonder sometimes whether anyone here actually knows what else is out there. There really isn't anything competing with RED whatsoever.

You show me one other camera that's 4K and that costs $17,500 for the body. I can't find anything. It's basically still the same nonsense as before, like $100,000 for a 1080p camera or some overpriced ancient crap like the Sony F950. Great camera... for 2002. It's completely out of date now. It's still better than the HVX200, obviously, but it's not that much better. I wouldn't pay 20 times as much for a camera that's like 3 times as good. It's massively overpriced, for rental, for sale, for anything.

And then you have the Scarlet, which is not only superior to the RED One, at least the higher end models, but it's also cheaper. The thing is ridiculous, it's like some dream camera, way ahead of its time, and I pay attention to the other camera companies because some festivals are sponsored by them, I get catalogues in the mail from B&H, I get advertising from them, etc. There isn't ANYTHING out there, on the horizon, anywhere, that's comparable. So I'm not really sure what people are thinking there. I'd love it if there was, competition is fantastic for the consumer, but RED has just revolutionized the camera industry (I don't want to say "film industry" because I'm not a fanboy, but I think that too is fair to say perhaps in time). There were a lot of skeptics but I'll tell you that I have a lot of DP friends, and my main two DPs have both shot on -- and loved -- the RED One. They were actually doubters, and they both love it, and then two more friends I know who have used the RED are totally stoked about it as well, they have had great experiences. So it's not like back before, waiting for a camera that people were skeptical would be any good, people didn't think RED could deliver -- I was confident they could, but there are always a lot of skeptics I guess. There's no doubt that if they have announced the Scarlet publicly as they have, it will deliver the goods. It may be later than announced but I don't see that as a huge deal.

I can certainly live with my HVX200s for another year. Although I would love to pick up a Scarlet or two in 6 months if possible, if that were an option.
 
Hi Jonathan, you don't have to defend RED here ..... we all know how far ahead they are, I myself did a few shots the last weekend here at the Ironman Austria with the RED ONE - here are the thoughts of people wondering how far the time schedule for the scarlet ist to go to 2010 or even 2011 ....
at the moment I shoot manly with a SONY MSW900 IMX camcorder ..... just waiting for the fixed SCARLET .....

It was 8 days ago through Visa. And nobody would call me back this year for renter's insurance (probably because I only wanted so little coverage I wasn't worthy any agent's time.)

All the more reminder to be sure everyone budgets and includes equipment insurance on their scarlet.

Thanks! but ya I think the average mom wont be able to tell the difference, its more people that are video-sensitive lol.

To me REDCODE is as much as important as the innovation of the hardware itself. REDCODE still boggles my mind. Gram hit the compression jackpot.

I'm sorry to hear about your bike, Definitely get the Scarlets insured!

I read that long thread. Not sure what part of it you're looking for comment on. There are some people who believe scarlet S35 will make it out this fall. Many more who aren't so optimistic. In reality, no one can say for sure since RED will not comment any further than what's been posted already.

Don't expect any updates to delivery date, specs or anything else to do with EPIC, Scarlet until they are ready to go to market with them.

Oh, and the title of that forum cracks me up. "Scarletuser.com". That's funny because there is no such thing as a scarlet user. Not yet at least.
 
The video seems interesting... Does anyone know if that's a recent interview?

I don't think Ted would have made the statement about fall release at IBC if they aren't pretty close to it. Fall could be December as well as September, but I expect the 2/3" and S35 Mysterium X models will be out before the end of the year. The larger Monstro sensor models were always on a sometime2010 release schedule anyway. While they haven't announced firm dates, they also haven't announced any showstoppers or major delay producing problems either. The delay from the original summer delivery dates was strictly due to reducing costs of overtime hours and expedited supplier delivery schedules due to economic conditions.

when RED was shipped i didn't even think of using it on a real gig for a year..my reason was to watch everyone else first. Sure I tested it and played around in the rental house and got to use it on some freebies. I let everyone else experiment first, make the mistakes, if you will......I intend to watch Scarlet the same way. I would be hesitant to buy a brand new camera then throw it right into a project without testing from start to finish. if you run into any hiccups, you'll either have a lot of explaining to do to your clients OR be frustrated yourself if you are the client yourself.

I agree, The scarlet would probably be best used for pro-sumers, people that want to use it for hobbies, and professionals who will have other options if there are early hiccups...

Will that prevent be from trying to get it as absolutely soon as possible? absolutely not.. :hand:
 
I know what I say has no validated weight, but I still maintain well get scarlet RIGHT before 2010

Which is why i mentioned the march/april personal deadline for myself. That way i can get a couple of months to really acquaint myself with the cameras ins and outs.

I've seen my work from a panny HVX up on a theater screen. If need be it CAN get the job done for me. But I really want to shoot that project on the scarlet.

Still...from everything ive seen and heard, it looks like Scarlet will be in several of our hands a few months before all that.
