  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN preorders...

400 Gb. Micro SD appears to be on sale at Amazon for USD $199.00 right now, which seems like a good idea given the memory needs of a media device like this.

I wonder if a UHS-I will suffice, or if we'll need a UHS-II card for video on the H1.

The one you linked to is a UHS-I that will record up to 100MB/s. It seems like UHS-II microSD cards can go up to about 275MB/s.

Yeah I had considered that as well. But as U1 seems to be fine for 4K recording, I took a leap and figured that the data stream should not be much more intense than that based on fragments I have read on these Hydrogen threads. If I understood it a little, the amount of data isn't that much more but it gives a different kind of information than flat video. So it might be OK. If not I can find other uses for it and the U3 Micro SD cards are still pretty pricey.

All this talk about the titanium case but what about the display? I hope iFixIt.com can repair a hologram display haha

Yeah, saw that same card at that price recently on Newegg. I asked here what rated card would the H-1 require and got no answer, so I didn't pull the trigger.

I've been using the 400gb for about 4 months now and I love it. It's over halfway filled... with media :).

I can live with the black on the Ti that we have been seeing, no idea what material but I would bet for the prototypes its been aluminum.
I would much rather have natural Ti so it matches my watch or should I say most of my watches but this is my everyday https://www.shinola.com/black-blizzard-s01118.html
The Ti rainbow nitride coatings do look nice too

That is a pretty handsome watch out of Titanium... I like the back of the watch too (very much).

Nice classic / retro styling and does not look like a "knock off" of anything but an original... (not like the fate of the Rolex).

Until recently I used to wear a watch from DIESEL, (cheaper) that is a All gunmetal grey (including the face and band ) and nice finish... Very simple and looks very machined , like knurled all around the sides ;-) {maybe I find a photo of it on line... Pretty decent "Man Jewlry". It's odd these days as everybody wears T shirts and jeans its the accessories that your Ferrari salesman and such will judge you buy as decent prospect or a lookie-loo. Same with real estate agents. The town / village I'm in right now, (in New Mexico) It's very low key and kinda funky, but good place to disappear too. You never know whether the guy you are standing next to at the local "Frontier Mart" or feed store in T shirt and ripped jeans is a billionaire or not... Met one of the founding guys for AVID at the feed store... lol, nice guy (Rides horses and does Taikwando). So sometimes I remove all accessories so I'm not so pigeon holed one way or another.

Working with horses stuff always gets smashed up and always wanted watch I could wear to work with the horses but If pressed and time is short I could just as easily wear it to a black tie event or formal evening out. In the U.K. during the Korean War era and earlier they made / issued a watch I think for sergeants on up that had a tough leather cover on it... With a press snap keeper... Very rugged, but you flip the cover off if needed to read the time or remove it all together. If I remember rightly the face and case was/is very handsome/classic of its time.

The leather goods from 'Shinola" look very good too.

Haha, I've been thinking about the same thing. Hopefully they use gorilla glass or something like that so we don't run into the easily damaged screens the other companies are putting out---especially because I feel like I'm not going to want to put it in a case with how cool the design looks.

Also, someone had mentioned carbon fiber earlier and said they think it wouldn't be used because it would break, but I seriously doubt that. I have a prosthetic leg that is made out of carbon fiber and it gets banged around all the time and has never had an issue. I bet the biggest deterrent to carbon fiber would be manufacturing it at scale with a price that makes sense.

This is my first post, but I'm pretty sure i've read every comment on every thread talking about the RH1 and I am pumped to say the least. Closing the preorders is a clear sign that they are ready to start manufacturing and I can't wait to see this amazing product in person. I know someone who has played around with it and he said "the 3D screen is bananas." He also told me a few other things that I haven't seen totally spelled out yet, so I'm not going to say anything about those. But needless to say I couldn't be more excited!

Pre-order officially over

It's officially over. Thanks again for the extra heads up. I sense a rather large update coming very soon

Hey Rob, welcome!

I'm pretty sure that was me talking about the carbon fiber. Yeah, like I said, not a materials expert. But I do know that the way carbon fiber is often used, it is vulnerable to impact, because it's strength is in its rigidity along the length of the fibers. That means that it's application can be changed based on the pattern of the weave in my mind, and it could feasibly work for phones -- it would just require some creative engineering. In the case of your leg, I'm sure it's designed for that application, and also offers the serious benefit of being lighter.

And thanks for that last little tease about what somebody said about the H1 after playing with it. Always good to hear there are more surprises in store!

Oh I thought you meant 2 years from now. Tbh I'm surprised that a company with no prior experience of phones has gone from starting a new project to retail launch in 2 years in the space, particularly considering the likely unique nature of hydrogen.

Don't be. Most of the expertise and work (on the phone side wise) is outside, then you supply the money and direction. It's been done before, I have a second edition neonode at home. That guy had 100 million, and didn't keep up. This is a bit further ahead marketability but the camera stuff looks well ahead.

That's some pretty serious usage!

A thought... Even if this is fast enough to record/playback .4V, wonder if it would handle the Triplet module/thingy, if it is separate... So many questions, so many mysteries.

Right capacity. Wrong card. The card you want is the Sandisk Extreme 400GB, with 160MB read speed and 90MB write speed. That card is intended for the latest and greatest phones and action cameras that shoot 4K video and will be released alongside the new models coming out over the next few months. The one you linked to is the slow-poke Ultra-series card that was intended for general storage on Android devices, with a nod towards HD video use. Put that in one of these new-fangled phones like HYDROGEN and you'll likely end up disappointed fairly quickly as the write speed is not all that great except in short bursts that can't really be sustained long-term.

I'm a fan of Redneck fixes...

^^^Not the best link for redneck fixes ... but pretty funny.

Don't know what happened to the original (maybe cake-fails bought them)...

$5 says you can tape a cracked H1 screen :-)

(but if it is gorilla glass maybe you have to run it over with a tank just to crack the screen and maybe there's not much left of the inside of the phone lol. So no point in "taping" the screen to text "Honey I cracked my screen in the car park... will be home later".

Can't believe Pre-orders are over. Amazing.

Different variants of Kevlar have been used in key and critical layers in Space Suits ... Kevlar seems to be making more of comeback.

Micro meteoroid impacts at 17 km/s or hypersonic speeds "Bullet proof" ... And then some.

Titanium + Kevlar = Pure badass awesomeness.

Speaking of this, if Hydrogen One takes off, RED may want to put a bid in to buy Motorola Mobility...It looks like they could be had for a discount:

Looks like lenovo is holding onto the brand for marketing purposes. However, the Japanese style Chinese start up screen on my otita, just looks weird with a capital W. But people laugh when they hear the Japanese ascented "Helo Moto"(yes I used one L). I suspect that Moto might have been involved in the phone.

But what would Red get? Since they were sold it had f been what I would say as on an.long upward trend. One of the of big wig Google guys dropped one and he was disgusted it fell apart. What an easy to dismantle phone is not agestute now? Come on, how ridiculous! If only Motorola knew it's fate was sealed as that phone fell slowly to the ground and fell apart. I hate phones thstre completely unreliable because you can't change the battery or fix anything up. Even my last Moto was manufactured in an alliance with Lenovo, I think, years back, and I didnt like that so much.

But with the canning of Nokia, Microsoft and Moto workers, there might be a number of people floating around that know the business who would be useful in negotiations with manufactures and in getting things together, because they know what's up and what's down. Head hunting the best 9f those would be a good strategy. When I wanted to do my own software company, I wanted somebody very good that could select and run.the best staff. These people are essential for looking after things and filling in.tje gaps as you do other things. Do they would manage the program teams with me, while I concenyrated on new coding technique and getting good code. At this rate, Red could land up owning Google. The long term situation has been heading somewhere people didn't seem aware of...

Jim, a while back you mentioned a 'Hydrogen Day' at Red Studios, probably in April, for content and preorder people.

Is that still on the radar? Any hint of a date yet?

Thanks

Mike

Right. The weave pattern matters.

BUT, you're certainly right about strength/rigidity.
I had two carbon-fiber cross-country ski poles broken
this winter due to impact from the side...

(I guess these are "extruded", which doesn't make it easy
to add strength by weaving in horizontal fibers.)

For "flat" (or more "cloth"-like) applications on the other hand,
I don't see much of a challenge with fibers going any which way.

Kevlar does not block RF, which is likely why it was selected for those back panels. The antennas will certainly be in those areas (which makes you wonder how performance will be affected when a battery or camera module is attached...)

I wouldn't worry. Antennas are normally placed along the edges.

Khmm.... on a second thought, aren't the scallops there made of metal?
