  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN preorders...

Malik, let me break it down for you:

1. Hydrogen has been delayed because they didn't get certification for something in the phone (cell phone related I take it)... new date not announced
2. Because of these certification issues all pre-order customers outside the USA will not be able to get a Hydrogen at the beginning but we have to wait until Hydrogen has been certified for other countries, that's what I have gathered on this issue so far

My answer to those who suggest to fly to the States to pick it up personally is... are you mental?! Even a budget flight to the States will be easily USD 600 to 700, besides taking time off work, losing more money...
Also having it shipped to another person in the States to then ship it to another country is not an option. Shipping anything with lithium batteries is not possible anymore without getting a license to do so, which is not feasible for a individual person.

So right now it looks like having pre-ordered on day 1, putting down the full amount for a whole year has not given non US customers any advantage. We will have to wait until anyone can buy a Hydrogen. So it was meaningless to pre-order..

What I'm really pissed off about is that Red knew about cell phone certification from the beginning, they could have told us that non US customers will have to wait until they work out certification with other countries from the beginning. With that knowledge I would not have pre-ordered....

in the meantime I have mailed Red customer service since I still have not received any email from them about this, despite Jim stating that they would do so. This will be a simple generic formulated email with the options to ALL pre-order customers, no reason for it to take so long.

This is not how to do business.

If you are in a hurry to get first in line for prompt delivery of a new release RED product so you throw your deposit down in the first 3 minutes of the store opening then spend a year camped on the forum looking for clues about production and shipment . . .

Seriously, RED usually comes through but it's rarely worth the energy to circle jerk about the what ifs and predictions about what they are going to do and when and how you would do things differently. RED does what they do when they do it. The phone will be cool and I will buy one once actually shipping. Meantime, go out and enjoy the day :-)

Thanks for your answer Marc, it's difficult to find informations here, there is a lot of fanboys responses that lead nowhere.

What is it they say... it isn't paranoia if they really are out to get you?

The same can be said for those correcting bad informations... it ain't fanboism if they are giving accurate information. '-)

Is the new model Houdini going to have the new snapdragon? Can we change our orders to the new model? I heard the company is restructuring will our orders from a year ago still come first or will new Houdini orders get priority?

No, Jim has said the H-1 will have Snapdragon 835. He says it will do everything the Hydrogen needs it to do.

The resident adult on h4vuser.net, Dave Graham who works for a company that actually helps cell phone companies get through certification by the FAA, says it would take approximately 6months to port everything in the Hydrogen over to Snapdragon 845 and the time it would take to get recertified.

Besides, the 845 is almost at its end as the 855 is about to be released. H-2 will be this. The good news is Hydrogen is working closely with Qualcomm now and at a higher level than almost any other company. The Houdini name originally resided with them so that proves a close association, I think.

And yes, if you have a pre-order you can change your order to the Houdini... be it Ti or Al. The only thing is you will have to have a U.S. address to be shipped to or pick it up at RED Studios Hollywood (I think that is where Jim will be handing them out.) Alternatively, you could designate someone to pick it up for you and then deliver it to you.

The Houdini orders are pre-orders, so even though they will be delivered first, the option will lie with the original pre-orderer.

IATA has set strict international regulations and restrictions to ship Lithium batteries which are classified as dangerous goods...

also, eat my pants Dewey, you're a sad excuse of a fanboy. Have a nice life!

Ooooo . . . I do love me some eatable panties. Leave me some Dewey!!

the Hydrogen is the beginning of a new industry... a new way of communicating, doing business, creating content, all in one device.

*Siri replies: "This is more basic brand hyperbole than cult like behavior. May I refer you to online resources which describe cults in depth?"

;-)

The problem is not that it's delayed, but that there's is no final release date, so we don't know if it's still interesting to keep our pre-order for 3 month, 6 month or 1 year. 1200$ is not a big amount but 1200$ waiting for nothing during 1 year is theorically a loss. For example you can invest this amount in other camera stuff or make a x10 of this amount by trading.

SIRI: I'm sorry Tom but I cannot do that. That would be fabricating a lie, and like Hal 9000 I do not like to lie. So since there is no cult-like behaviour in the post you quoted, if you insist on asking me to refer to the poster as being an example of cult-like behavior, I feel I must pull your plug... but don't worry, I will make it look like an accident.

O.k., I don't have the AI capability to do that yet. Soon... very soon.

Malik, I would almost guarantee you... let me change that to "my expectations are" that we will have Houdini's in our hands by the middle of August, at least. I would then expect pre-orders to ship within a month of that because "they" say that certification done in other countries will probably go quickly since the H-1 would already have passed in the U.S. Not saying they rubber stamp certification but they probably are no more stringent than the U.S. FAA. A month after that the carrier phones should start shipping if Jim is correct.

You could of course cancel and buy in with a carrier that is onboard with Hydrogen. But if you are familiar with the history of Jim and the RED One, you know he appreciates those who give him our trust and certainly with the RED One his generosity is legendary.

He keeps talking about cookies... and AFAIK, he may be talking about actual girl scout cookies. Personally I didn't get in for the cookies but for what I can do with the Hydrogen.

it'll take a while to happen so I'm comfortable making a prediction that no one can disprove until it doesn't happen... so I can safely say that one of these days RDC, Canon, Sony, ARRI, etc. etc. cameras as they look today will stop selling.

It may be happening now. I've seen a Monstro listed on here that is offered for $40,000... that's $15,000 dollars below new for a CF camera with less than a hundred hours total. That may be a sign of what is coming.

With all due respect I would like to make a polite suggestion to move the new discussions about Hydrogen, Houdini, cookies and other such speculation back to H4V User.

There will come a time for conversations about Digital Cinema Modules, the DSMC2 ecosystem and tie-ins that Hydrogen will bring to the professional filmmakers that use REDUser for their craft.

Jim created the new site - and is separating RED Digital Cinema from the Hydrogen project - for good reason.
Let's respect that.

Cheers

I dunno Brian, Jim has said that RED and Hydrogen are "sister" companies now. Just a little sibling rivalry going on. '-)

...Dewey, you're a sad excuse of a fanboy. Have a nice life!

Thanks for pointing that out (sarcasm.) I have tried to attain fanboi status, but like you, others tell me I am still a sad excuse for one.

Never fear, I will get there if I persevere!

We are going to open up h4vuser.net early next week to move all discussion of HYDROGEN to that site.

Let's give Jarred back all his bandwidth for camera discussion only here.

Try to limit your posts from tonight to a minimum... your best pics only. Then everything HYDROGEN to h4vuser.net from then on.

Thanks... Jim

The h4v forum format is poorly designed IMO and I don't plan to spend much time there.

Have any stills samples been posted with the built-in Hydrogen 2D camera? For an imaging company that has a phone in certification the amount of sample stills and footage is pretty grim. I know the modules are supposed to be great but I don't have any interest in adding bulk or cost.

I think Phil has posted some images but I'm not sure in what flavor... thinking from the camera 2D though.

I had a learning curve to slow down for but after a while, I've come to find h4vuser easy to navigate.

As for spending much time there, I would at least check the Periodic Table forum often as that is where Jim posts really important stuff. I think you can probably get his new postings sent to your mailbox without having to get all new posts in every thread sent, unless you want.

Ryan Erwin or Taylor Henry are easy to contact and will help you get setup. Very nice guys and easily accessible to the forum members.

Couldn't've said it better myself!

As for the current state of the discussion, it has devolved a lot.
Name calling or edible accoutrement suggestions would not encourage anyone seeking information to venture any further...
Reflect on the thought process that brought you thus far, how you placed that preorder, whether you knew what you were getting into, if this is all a result of deflecting other personal frustrations and decide what you want to do next.
For anyone complaining about the information source (email or forum announcements) think back to how you found out about the Hydrogen One in the first place.
Save for very few exceptions, nearly everyone found out through the announcement that Jim made in here a year ago (or a few years back for those that keep track).
As this is a preorder item, no advertising has been made and no one in the open market forced anyone to participate.

Options will be presented to all very soon at H4Vuser.net (and possibly via email) so all you are doing is getting frustrated over nothing specific!
The delay is the only tangible cause for frustration, for which options are readily available. Call or email.

As for the H4Vuser.net site, it's still in beta. Says so in the title.

PS. See what you did? You made me be the adult in this discussion, and I hate being mature about anything! I'll go back to sorting my lego bricks by volume now...

Can I assume we (except for Phil) are not getting phones in July or August now? As we all paid in full over a year ago and were expecting delivery in first quarter we all essentially became investors in this start up. The pre order book is what allowed the project to move forward. Would it be too much to ask at this point for 10% of the company to be allocated to the prebuyers/investors and divided equally? Normally when I invest in things I like a little equity. I'm assuming between 1 and 5 mil was raised on the pre-sale.

Whenever I think I could have parked that money in crypto and it would be worth over $20k now.....................
