The RED ONE is by far the most enduring piece of technology I've ever owned. It's rock solid, shoots 4.5K and is the easiest camera to buy used components for inexpensively.

I still own 2 completee RED ONE packages and have no plans of selling either anytime soon.

If you get a chance to buy a complete package for under $10k. Do it! You will be able to sell it for what you paid for it a year from now... guaranteed! What other used gear can hold its' value for 12 months! In fact, I bet the RED ONE MX bodies alone will be worth $10k three years from now when productions need replacements or have to match footage.

It's still the quietest RED ever made. Impossible to scratch, dent or smash. Weight was almost perfect for Steadycam. All and all rock solid. I still work with it from time to time and I enjoy it.

I wished RED gutted the BT ones and put 3 epics in one MX housing as its "super slowmo" new workhorse. But that was not in the cards.

Red One is as sexy today as it was right back at the beginning... and yeah it shoots well too ;)

Obsolete obsolence...

The R1 is every gram as good today as it was back then.

Personally, if I had the money, I'd have bought a R1 M in a heartbeat.

But I don't really NEED one these days...

Yep the R1 MX and original Red One is still a great camera, i tell producers over and over they can still use it, but it's like talking to a brick wall.

I like that I can mount two RED Bricks (Swappable + Aux Power) and a 300GB Drive on the back, connect two monitors and an EVF and its so quiet.

Soon producers will be begging for the "Vintage" RED One look. :)

P.S. And did I mention RED keeps improving their R3D Color Science and making even my old footage better every year? :-)

He who pays the piper calls the tune, but if the producer isn't putting up any money, what good is he/she? Get a producer who can produce, i.e. knows something.

I'm working on an indie film now and the Director and DOP is totally against using my R1MX as a B cam because the DOP owns an Epic. At this level of production I find it hard to agree with their mind set being the color spaces wont match and the R1 wont look as good (blah blah blah), I quietly shake my head. I'm no expert but if it works for Fincher and Bay to say the least, I think we'd be just fine. Given the variation of lighting on our indie budget, some scenes are not even holding up to each other shot on the same dam Epic. Ahh well.

Remind me how much 320GB of storge for EPIC and SCARLET costs again?

No thanks... I would never EVER want to go back to spinning hards for my REDMX for any reason. Next to the MX upgrade, the SSD Module and SSD's were definitely the biggest development made to the RED ONE System. A LOT problems went away, stress levels decreased and on set confidence went way the hell up when I upgraded to the SSD Module. Money, very well spent.

I totally agree...the R1 MX with SSDs is a bulletproof system! Ours goes through a lot, being constantly used by students, and it is always ready to rock.

Just remind me how much the SSD upgrade for the RedMX and 320GB worth of SSD storage costs. I've never encountered any problems recording to RED Drives. Why would anyone spend the money to upgrade Red MX to SSD considering the cost of the upgrade and the cost of the media in comparison to the cost/value of the RED ONE. CF cards work fine for situtations where you'd have problem with RED Drives.

Totally no problem with shooting on multiple RED DRIVEs on R1 when it comes to Studio shoots…
And you get a 320GB RED DRIVE for like 350 Dollar used? Try that with an 256GB SSD - good luck ;)

Sure - spinning media has it's limitations; it wasn't working for us with tougher vibration and it was not shock proof either (had it out on a shooting range once - the shocks of the muzzle flashes brought it temporarily down when too close to the gun). But under controlled environments this is totally no problem. SSD media has (many) advantages for sure but that doesn't mean our old media stops working :)

Any half decent Colorist can match them in about 2 minutes worth of tweaking. The Epic is better on night shoots in low light but with what you can do with Redcine X and Davinci you can't tell the difference in most cases. I work on a lot of Epic/Scarlett/Red One mixed shoots and a good Colorist can match all three under most circumstances.

I'm a former Stills shooter. There are two cameras that are iconic in my view. The first is the original Hasselblad. I loved that camera! When my photography business went digital we sold off all of our Hassys but I kept one and I have it to this day. I use it as a book end and a conversation piece. I LOVED our Hasselblads and it will always have a special place in my heart. I will never sell that last Hasselblad camera.

My first RED camera was a Scarlet. It's a great camera as well. It has been said that the Scarlet is a gateway drug and I agree 100%. I love my Scarlet but I can't wait to trade it for an Epic.

I recently purchased a used RED One (with a SSD upgrade) and after a month the camera has already risen to that iconic level of a Hasselblad in my view. Don't ask me to quantify it, but IMO the RED One is one of those cameras that will be regarded as an amazingly significant camera well after we are all dead. I will never sell my RED One!

I'm sure someday I will own an Epic and will feel the same way but I agree 100% about the RED One. It is truly an iconic camera!
