HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

Just pondering......Besides Pro-Video and Grafx Pros, what market can Apple sell towers too? Let's pretend we are the CEO and the tech's and marketing folks are sitting across the boardroom table. The question, "How many units, in millions can we sell next year and how does that compare to our other product lines?"

This is promising and will surely become the de-facto standard for post-production with RED cameras. Looking forward to more details, especially on some of the tuning / configuration done to make it more RED centric. GTX 680 4 GB (or multiples thereof) should definitely be an option, at least till Tesla K20 comes along later this year. Also hoping for an updated Rocket.

Interesting to note that there is much more discussion on Apple or "Mac vs PC" than the HP Z820 in this thread!

I understand that switching will require adjustment, especially with the interfaces, and a long-time exclusively OS X user is naturally going to be more comfortable with OS X (the same applies for long-time Windows users exactly the same way). You don't have to deal with the OS much, however. Just pin your CS6 applications to the taskbar, auto-hide it, and it will start to look very familiar to the OS X dock. Click on the application icon, it will launch, and Windows will get out of the way. By the way, there are useful Win+1~9 shortcuts to launch applications based on their position on the dock.

So, for example, power on your computer, once it boots to desktop, hit Win+3, and Premiere Pro CS6 starts up. Once you are done, hit the power button and it will shut down. As easy as that, you wouldn't even know which OS you are using.

I'm sorry I couldn't find it in the thread, but are those internal REDstations and internal REDstation + BluRay Burner drives for sale separately? If so, how much?

Looks nice and convenient for heavy lifting if you are cutting with an avid and only need DNXHD . This machine is not able to make Pro Res.
There is no professional way to make a Pro Res on a Windows PC. You can go through FFMeg Freeware but its a science experiment.
Does RED and Adobe have some way of making a Pro Res in windows.
Or does RED has a new cross platform editting Codec?

What Codec do premiere cutters use.

Pro Res on a PC that would be the greatest thing that ever happened to the Finishing world.

Awesome news. I need a RED camera first, but after that, this will be the next thing on the list.

Finally the internal fight I have been having with myself as to if to go with apple or PC is hereby over. I will be getting two of these as soon as they come out next month. Just wish there was more detail on the machine and pricing since "Entry at US$ 10,000" is not much help. My mind is pretty much now made up but what will I get with this entry pricing and what additional will I have to purchase to make it the machine I really want ? Just hope these details will come out sooner than later.

Pro Video
Pro Audio
Pro Graphics and Design
Programmers
Gamers

The first 4 create content that sells Apple's consumer products. If there are not people creativing videos, music, and iOS apps, then there is no content to sell iStuff.

I roll my eyes at the guys rocking a 2010 and screaming they NEED a new MacPro to function. Excuses excuses...

If I was one of your clients and you told me it was going to take 3 hours to render instead of an hour in order to save $1,000 every 2 years-- you wouldn't have me as your client for very long.

This HP tower doesn't have Thunderbolt. That's huge when you have to work with external storage.

There is only one reason why this tower does not have Thunderbolt.. because someone won't let Thunderbolt out of their grasp. Once they do, it will likely be a $50 card that you can slide in on a PC. That said.. thunderbolt really hasnt caught on.. probably for the same reason. I can count on one hand how many external thunderbolt drives there are, and half of those don't run fast enough to outpace USB 3.

It was said about a week ago in another thread that those internal REDstations will be exclusive for the HP stations.

But then again, things do change...

Funny that there is so much noise about Apple not upgrading the towers in "forever," but RED hasn't stepped up and done anything to make the Rocket faster/better/cheaper either. Little has been said about that. Not bashing, just saying... There's nothing I'd like better than a faster/better Apple solution (although mine works just fine for me at the moment) except maybe a $995 RED Rocket II. :yesnod:

Cool, I thought Thunderbolt had to be part of the motherboard?

ASUS has a board out with thunderbolt ASUS P8Z77-V PREMIUM

What will the workflow to Pro Res be with this machine? Its a huge problem for finishing. Gamma shifts ect.

I'd love a streamlined full proof way to make a consistent Pro Res on a PC, I own 10k in Nvidia cards that I can't use because everyone wants Pro Res 90% of the time therefore I run scratch on a 2008 Mac.

The product page at ProMAX has already been up.

And if the "entry" price is around $10000, there is at least $1400 in savings (not even counting the Redmag readers). The entry level system is:

- 16 Core 2.0GHz Processor
- 32GB RAM
- 1 x RED ROCKET
- Quadro 4000
- Boot Drives Only
- DVD Burner

If you configure a similar model at HP, it's around $6650 (pre-tax w/ 20% coupon). Coupled with the Redrocket at $4750, it'd normally cost $11400 (pre-tax). If those prices are across the board, I assume the savings would be anywhere from 10~15% with ProMax and Tekserve.

Savings or not, there isn't a whole lot of flexibility if you're on a tight budget, and top line is going to be top dollar. For people trying to keep the tab under 10k, I'd recommend to forego the perks, build from scratch, and upgrade as money comes. If you do have the money, I'd say it seems worth it (unless you're exclusive to Apple of course).

Looks awesome! The only thing I'm kinda curious about is why it has a FireWire 400 interface on the front...

Sounds like someone who hasn't used Windows in a while. Windows 7 is actually pretty powerful and relatively free of the problems that plagued Vista, through the security popup windows are still on by default even for the "Ultimate" edition.

I can't stand Windows. I'll wait for Mac to catch up. In the mean time I'll use a Thunderbolt Red Rocket.
