  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

Holy %&^*( interesting. Nice work on new station...this thing looks like a beast. If I did not require a mobile solution i would be all over it. Keep it up.

Hi Clay,

I got my ultimate notebook PC finally, and I will a post very soon a test of it. You won't be disappointed...

Any idea if we'll be able to order one without the REDRocket if we already own one? What about if we already own CS6? I would love to buy one, but saving some amount of $ due to already having that unique piece of hardware and the software would be appreciated. :) Just curious.

The fact of it all is, technology is moving forward (and has been) while Apple sits idle in the pro department. My 2008 Mac Pro definitely is showing it's age, even as I consider small upgrades. When I sit down at modern workstations, the difference is clear.

I'm not upset with Apple, just disappointed because I appreciate aspects of their design and was hoping for a clearer future now. I may be able to wait a year or more, but in a month I may not. Many companies and individuals cannot. Speed and efficiency matter. Apple delivers those, but not in a workstation type solution. Not anymore.

Looks awesome!

heh heh heh... :) Word on the street is that Apple has left the pro tower game for at least another year, if not forever.

Unfortunately, I think it is time to either wait and painfully milk everything you can out of that 5 year old mac pro tower, or move on to the dark side for your heavy lifting needs.

HP is eager to make some new friends as shown by there unprecedented support to the professionals that really kicked off with their mega booth at NAB. You would be surprised at just who has switched to these.. and just looking at the fact that two legendary pro mac system builders both PROMAX and TEKSERVE have jumped into the game it is very telling.

It's not the dark side as long as the Tower runs Linux. Please tell me there will be Linux support...

I'd be all over this if the 3 year warranty applied to the rocket card too! :)

Okay Jarred, if you keep talking to me like this, I might just end up ordering one, to use for Rape of a Beauty here in Rome... ;)

Ketch .. if you order come to Rome a couple of days ... ;)

Well this is disappointing. Not so much the PC vs MAC ad nauseum battle, but rather after all these years we are still forced to have a PC vs MAC issue. One would think we should have moved along faster and farther away from all of this, yet here we are. Going from MAC to PC is like asking a right handed person to start writing with their left. It feels unnatural, everything is backwards. So we have moved backwards in time that if I don't want to have to relearn to do what I've already been doing for YEARS without a problem, then somehow I am not keeping up? Nonsense. It's a huge waste of my time and money, and that's what one of the things that bugs me. I've owned several PCs and know Windows, but prefer the MAC.

And the smirking that goes on with the "I told you so" crowd is so unnecessary. As if this validates you somehow. It goes both ways, PC and MAC.

Finally, there is the issue of cost. So many folks have greatly invested in their computer platforms that switching is no small feat cost-wise. These Windows machines aren't any cheaper than the Macs when they start "around $10,000". Yeah, that's some great savings we got going on there. I'm sure it's a marvelous machine, but it ought to be at those prices.

Depends on what you get for "around $10,000". If it's what was listed as the sample system and that includes the Red Rocket (which is half that), then it is a pretty good deal.

Luigi, you mean, that if I order you'll come to Rome, as I'm already in Rome... ;)

Ketch,, hehe my bad English;)
It was to tell you I'd take the data of the workstation and maybe Work it over for a version Moutain Lion ...

Luigi..

Yeah, towers have often been updated/announced in January. I have a feeling January will be it. But honestly, I'm working on a MP1.1 from 2006 and doing just fine. Yeah I don't get real time bla bla, but I still get the job done. I roll my eyes at the guys rocking a 2010 and screaming they NEED a new MacPro to function. Excuses excuses...
I too wonder about this. We were on the same boat waiting and waiting. But its not like we just stopped working with the current set-up. It still works and amazingly I may add :)

Yes ketch.. just for the heavy lifting. I have started to see DIT's move over to Windows machines.. the best DITs. It is really transparent when you are in the actual programs.. you would never know what os you are in, the windows machine is just way faster. You can hide it under the desk if you don't want anyone to know :)

Or put a sticker stating the machine price on the chassis.. :emote_whack:

Who is this directed at - RED?

if it makes you feel better for the future... these 820's that Jim and I are using in our office right now we are using in resolutions above anything that Apple even supports.. so as of right now, Apple is not even an option on the table, purely because Apple can not drive single screens with the kind of resolution that we are using.

You need professional tools like Nvidia Mosaic... which kicks ass and is included with every PC Nvidia Quadro card, but Apple cares not to support, even in the Apple Quadro for Mac card.

Mark, shouldn't your comments be on an Apple forum? No offense meant, but the only party responsible for "forcing" a PC vs MAC issue is the manufacturer choosing not to support current technologies.

Mike, the comment wasn't aimed at anyone, just an observation about the status quo in computerville. There are two camps, or if you will, the Red states and the Blue states. Then there are the Tea Party folks, lauding the Linux. Seems like we should have come farther along than we are at present. "Can't we all just get along?"
