  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP Z820 (16) 3.21GHz Cores Jarred? Hyper threading maybe?

This is just very unclear to my way of thinking about i7 chips and mobos? Could you please clarify and sorry if I missed other informed questions as there were just so many pages, very busy...

I think you guys need to improve your specs sheet on this but it sounds good. Good luck and it was a pleasure meeting you!

It's dual processor Xeon 3.21GHz with 8 cores on each processor, which gives you 16 cores total.

EDIT: Corrected per Jarek below. My bad.

He's going to get a swelled head, and then who am I going to get to accompany me to eat Flinstone size servings of prime rib, drink too much beer, and prattle on about technical details that would cause the average nerds ears to bleed?

That said, I'm pretty sure Dr. Who calls Jeff occasionally for technical advice...

I agree with Elsie -- in other words, I like how you interact with things here as they arise. What would be cool would be a little icon (like the way RED people can be tracked in a thread) that makes it easy to track down what Jeff's saying.

I read the Anandtech review of the new retina Macbook Pro, and of course half of it is incomprehensible for me, but I read some interesting things at these pages:

That clearly show that Apple took a very pro-active role in getting these graphics to work on the software side. For anyone that says that Apple only cares about the consumer, should read these pages.

The internal clock multiplier is locked, all you can do is tweak the external clock frequency and voltage. Few Xeon motherboards have the ability to do even that, for the new E5-2600 series, only the ASUS and EVGA boards have the ability. It's hard enough to keep a CPU like the 2687W happy and cool under load, I'm not about to start ramping up voltage and external clock speed. Hard enough to find proper RAM fast enough for it as it is, so overclocking the RAM or trying to find faster ECC registered RAM is like hunting for unicorn turds.

One thing to watch though is the upcoming generation of 22nm Ivy Bridge Xeons, which are in sampling and OEM testing right now. Less than a year away from launch. The current samples are all shipping with unlocked multipliers and they consume a lot less power. First time ever that Intel has shipped Xeons, samples or otherwise, with unlocked multipliers. We'll see what happens....

Overclock or not, it seems to me that sixteen 3GHz cores beats six 5GHz cores for CPU-intensive tasks?

Yes, provided your software uses all the CPU cores. The Xeon CPUs also have larger cache and other features that help increase performance too.
 
So am I reading Big J's 1st post correctly....

There will be a builder to add whatever you want. RED ROCKET, CS6, and all drivers etc are pre-installed, starting around $10,000.

Surely this above spec is more than 10k? Or am I just looking at things with UK eyes where we always seems to get shafted on computer stuff.. (I have got used to paying 1 to 1 dollar to pound)

The specs on the sample build is certainly above 10k. That price is most likely for the entry model; the tech specs can be found on the Promax website:

You should have also looked at the color gamut of the display. It only covers 66% of AdobeRGB. Not good at all.
