ok so for a minute I'm Jim Jannard.. (I have this dream every once in a while, I wake up around buying my 5th house, or an island).

I'm running RED, and competition is releaseng stuff all around me. I am determined not to release EPIC or SCARLET before they are ready, but at the same times I am watching hundreds of thousands of dollars fly out my arse every day.

Now I'm in Tattoo (Stage 1). So I want to field test these babies as best I can. However the reality of business also demands I field test them AS FAST AS I CAN.

So I gather up my RED boys, and my testers, get a list of things to do, and get everyone focused on doing it.. Fast. The idea being that I want to get through the bugs at all possible speed.

I think the silent treatment, and the NDAs are all good things. Tattoo needs to run well, and fast if RED is going to get the release schedule under control.

If they do a good job, we could see Epics before year's end (I still say that would be quite a feat)

Jay

Jay, can I come into your dream with you? I promise, I wont get into the way!

I will try and get into your dream tonight and whisper "Earlier than years end, you can do it! I know you can! Maybe end of summer even, positively before end of summer"

I shot R1MX handheld tonight for quite a few hours and I can´t wait to get that itsy bitsy tiny Epic!

I want you to be right Eirik, I really do. But so much stuff would already have to be in place for that to happen..

If it does, then it would be the single biggest surprise RED ever pulled. To meet your deadline they would have to say all this in the next 8 weeks:

Hey everybody, it's Jim... Free Scarlets for everyone! (Sorry.. Dreaming again.. Take 2)

The following is FAKE!
Hey everybody here's some news:

Tattoo went great, cameras are pretty much done.. All the hardware is set, with a minor change. They are in production now, and will be heading out the door in 6-8 weeks (This would be Oct).
IO modules are done and in production
Batteries and Modules are done and in production
EVF is done and we will have the numbers to support all sales
Side handle, the RED SSDs, and the SSD module is completed and in production.
2 of the LCD monitors are also done and in production
Oh yeah, and the LENS Mounts are done and in production!
Of course the REDMotes are also done..

And the list keeps going and going and going.

Have you ever, in your entire time watching these boards seen RED move that many products out in 8 weeks?

No? Me neither... Actually I have not seen ANYONE do it.

I am NOT being negative.. I am however, trying to be realistic.

End of the year is a very optimistic guess. By this I mean, more than 100 Epics and all needed accessories shipped by year's end.

Do I have a "realistic" guess? Yeah.. But I don't want to depress anyone

It will be after the turn of the year. I'm sure of it.

So what have you been sure of in the past that worked out the way you were sure it would?

We got the MX in our REDs now, so the Epic brings a comfortable form factor and a slightly higher resolution, and a slightly larger sensor... (and higher framrates for those odd occations you need that) and we are loosing market shares to DSLRs and soon to Alexa, we need Epic now, not next year!

I wonder what our world would have been like if the Epic-X had been released spring 2009 as announced.

BTW: My right arm is completely numb from carrying a modestly equipped R1 all evening, it shouts "GET US EPICS NOW!"

I think the logic here is totally solid. However, I would say that things like the battery and I/O modules are pretty straightforward and only require existing electronics in a new housing. Also the redmote seems pretty much done from a hardware standpoint. Jarred has said the lens mounts are done already. So, though I agree that they're still going to be a few months behind, I think the biggest reason for set backs will be the speed of their production runs.

Anyway, staying on topic. Yes- run silent, run deep! I think we haven't heard much lately because they're busy elves in the workshop.

I wouldn't be that surprised if most of that were true - I thought Jarred said at least that the lens mounts were done, and the batteries, side handle, redmote, side CF module, and EVF all looked almost finished before Tattoo started.

We've also seen pictures of the SSDs and SSD module working, so that must be fairly far along too - so I think it's mainly just the brains that they're waiting on... Which obviously are far more complex than anything else in the line-up.

If this is optimistic then I am bummed.

Besides my obvious impatience to get an epic in hand, I just find it hard to believe that Jim would have asked us for 5k deposit money if he didn't believe that large scale production was just a couple months away.

That is the kicker for me too, the deposit deadlines. I don't see any reason to believe Red won't be shipping the first 1000+ Stage 2's in this calendar year.

Jay,

end of the year it's very nice guess but also it's just a dream.

Also I don't see that "hundreds of thousands of dollars fly out my arse every day" (Jim).

Only the perfect and bullet proof Epic/Scarlet can compete with may other products on today's market (DSLRs, Alexa, F35 upgraded, etc,...).

No Christmas tree presents except that you can watch some of great stuff shot on

Epic by selected famous cinematographers and filmmakers (The Epic Tattoos).

Reality thing is probably at NAB 2011 with a great launching party for the both products.

In meantime I could guess that Jim would become the main shareholder of Panavision stock just to secure his own success and future in the cine world...

Jim Jannard owes the best digital cine technology and it's just a question of the most appropriate way or channel to implement that value in the present situation of...

Again, it was just a dream...

if end of year is an optimistic guess for stage 2 epics, what do you think that means for the scarlets? NAB 2011 launch with first deliveries summer 2011?

Isn't speculation fun!

I agree. Year end - AT BEST!

But I'd rather they take their time and get it perfect.

Okay - near perfect!

How about they get it perfect - but soon! :-)

I hope this estimate is not right.

When Jim stated the July/August time frame for Stage 2 (or whatever it was, but summer) I believed it, and based my decision to NOT keep my RED One, (Stage 3), on that information.

If I had thought that I had until the end of the year at the earliest before Stage 2 cameras were to ship I would have gone with Stage 2 and not Stage 3.
