  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How many of you are taking the final chance to go Epic to Dragon?

but couldn't possibly spend any money on it without a lot more information.

You aren't being asked to!

That's my whole point - No-one has asked you to spend a dime on Weapon, nor indicated that you'll need to before it's revealed at N.A.B..

Only that if you own Dragon before N.A.B. you'll get some extra credit towards Weapon accessories if you decide to upgrade.

The choice is clear

The choice is clear

As an Epic owner, I never had a need to go Dragon. Epic was more than good enough for my film shooting needs. Now with Weapon in the game, and after much long deliberation I've decided to go Dragon to stay up with the game. I've bounced around options of getting a Scarlet Dragon to move to Weapon and selling my Epic X as a package as that'll be easier to sell as a whole rather than selling off non-weaponizable parts at the same time everyone else would be selling them. So, not having the full details of the upgrade price, options, accessories was very difficult in making the best choice on my end. But isn't this how Red has always announced their cameras, with a little tease here and there, regardless of how many times they say they'll stop doing it, it never works.

As frustrating as the tease can be, I am reminded that no other company gives you this "pre-information." If it were any other company, we'd be presented with Weapon in its full details and price, and upgrades at full, regular price. What they're offering is "insider" info to take a leap of faith on a discounted price and specials. And sometimes a little information can feel worse than no information at all, but seeing it from the perspective as special "insider" info rather than a regular "public" info can sometimes help ease that frustration.

If Red's history with upgrades is any guide, it made much more sense for me to upgrade to Dragon than buying a Scarlet Dragon.
- Dragon is here to stay along the lines with Scarlet Dragon, Epic Dragon, and Weapon Dragon
- Weapon upgrades starting mid-year, chances are with my place in line won't be receiving anything till late 2016
- I don't have to upgrade right away, in fact don't plan on it until the market moves in that direction, since Dragon will still be supported, and I can get several years out of it before considering upgrades.

Apparently the EU Prices went up today. (All prices because of the weak Euro)

Upgrade is now 10.070 Euro Ex. Vat.
So anyone who wants to upgrade, I suppose after NAB the price will go up again...
That makes things even more time 'pressureus' (I know that isn't a word)

You'll love Dragon.

On paper, Dragon may not seem like much... Epic MX is still rock'n... to some it in may even seem like a minor upgrade...

but man oh man, I was floored and wide-eyed the first time I used it. Looking back on it, I must of looked something like this:

With Dragon I can achieve these results: 20 megapixel photos, stunning low light performance and incredible Dynamic range. I couldn't do this with MX.

EDIT- Cannot embed flickr pictures here. Not very good at this, any one care to share how to do it?

Hi Sergio, nice picture.

Had a look at the Flickr links to it. I don't know if this is how it's supposed to work, but if you select 'BBCode' instead of 'HTML' in the 'Share' tab, you can pick this part out of the code -

and it will give you this -

Or you can just cut and paste the whole thing and get the extra bits of writing connected to the picture too -

Congratulations !! Currently waiting for our Epic to Dragon upgrade to be shipped back to us ! Hoping it will be soon, very excited to get our hands on the beast!

At the new EU pricing?

Did it just before, but wrote here right now, lucky. Even luckier that I bought new rail components just two weeks ago. Now I have all I need from Red until I upgrade to Weapon, which might be a year from now.

Hi Christopher,

I did also order the upgrade. Do you know how long the procedure will take? Did you get any timetable from RED?

I was told 3-4 weeks.

But some people have been getting their cameras back in as little as 2 weeks. Depends how many camera's are being upgraded at once I guess.

Red should be getting my upgrade money Monday and then I am sending in my Scarlet. Wasn't going to upgrade, but with the improved low light capabilities, the easy raw workflow, getting the old upgrade price, and generous Weapon upgrade path, it started to be too good to pass up. That and realizing whatever new camera I bought would not be as good. Starting to look forward to getting my upgrade and shooting on the Dragon. My MX made shooting my webseries much easier as I got good results in situations were a HD camera would have looked terrible.

Thanks Lee! So BBC code is the key here. I'm just a complete idiot in these things.

I decided to upgrade when the price was put back down to $9500. Organised with my bomb squad rep to drop it off a couple of days before NAB when I touch down in LA.

It became more a decision about being left behind than a must-have but like anything I'm sure I won't realise how much a wished I'd had it before until I have it out and shooting.

I am planning to pay for the upgrade before NAB, but am trying to 'delay' the actual 'rebuild' till june. Due to a (for me) big production I need my Epic MX till the end of may (think june 6) on a daily basis. My bomb squad can not assure me that this will be possible. Does anyone know if we can influence the planning of the upgrade-moment after paying?

I paid 3 weeks ago, and will drop my cameras off next week when I'm in L.A. - so yes you can delay between paying and upgrade... a little bit.

I think the biggest factor at this point is: when will RED close down the Dragon upgrade line? This is probably why your Bomb Rep can't guarantee your timeline; RED is stopping these upgrades early summer.
