  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Holiday Update + IPP2 Preview Build

Thanks Ketch! IPP2 is more than just colour science though. It's a whole new system of raw development that takes the measured data and colorimetry aspects (which I'd refer to as the colour science) and uses that data in new ways to render images that look great. I'm really looking forwards to seeing what you do with it.

Graeme

Can't wait to make full use of it in my next Series of Narrative Short Films & Fashion Films... :)

Looking at the preview RCX build, I'm also a bit lost about how we are supposed to use that one, which settings we should select and so on. The old Gamma curves seem to be gone too. And all the files seem to load using REC709 color space and BT1886 gamma, even if I used different ones in camera.
And last thing, where do I find the IPP2 LUT that you put in the new firmware ? Or is there a way re-call that one directly through RDX without using the 3D LUT Post tool ?

With IPP2 we're separating out creative controls from technical controls. With the original image processing, the RedColors and DragonColors were a combination of a transform to REC709 colour space and some creative adjustments. With IPP2 you'd select the type of monitor you're targeting, which would be Rec709 colour space and BT1886 gamma (BT1886 standardized the gamma of a typical REC709 broadcast CRT monitor).

The preview build of REDCine-X is currently exposing these technical controls to allow you to target any type of display or monitor with a default look. The full implementation of IPP2 will expand that to give control over the look options too, along with more advanced options for the technical aspects of the displays targetted. That is also when we'll be getting into exporting the math as LUTs for post workflows.

Awesome :)

So how are we supposed to use this preview software ?

I just installed this new FW and am doing some quick tests at home in a room lit by Philips Hue bulbs, (a few different colors, Blue, Red, etc...). The Red bulb especially looked terrible with any existing color science on previews FW. I tried switching to RWG and it looks way better already, the roll-off is much nice (not that over-saturated flat Yellow anymore), but it still looks more yellow-orange than Red. Dragon also had issues with these kind of reds.

Anyway, to try out IPP2, are we supposed to switch to "graded" LOG3G10 and RWG, and activate the included IPPZ preview LUT ? Or what's the idea ?

Thanks :)

In camera, easiest way to try the IPP2 preview is to go to "presets" and select the "IPP2 Preview" preset which sets the raw development to RWG/Log3G10 and loads up the IPP2 preview math as a LUT. When we move to the full (rather than preview) implementation in camera of IPP2, we'll put the flexibility in to do more options than the default REC709/BT1886.

Thank you Jarred and the hard workers on this over at RED.

Just got home. I've got a couple of samples to share of the newest Helium firmware.

First to address the banding:

Be aware that the saturation is pushed an additional 100% to amplify the artifact of where it was and the vast improvement to where it is now. Additionally, this is a "hard" light source to deal with. Around 2700K.

And a quick sample of IPP2 with this firmware:

Thanks for doing that Phil, as always.

Nice!

Love Helium already and looking forward to the new Color Science...

Btw, I totally knew it it would have happened this way with "RAVEN"... :)

Yeah, the RAVEN is proving to be a huge success. I have one as a second camera that I'll probably offer for sale after the first of the year. Things are happening in my life that overshadow even movie-making (in a positive way) so no need to let it sit when it could be making images.

That and when I do get back to movie-making as my first priority, I'll likely get an 8k Helium as my #2 camera (with primary as 8k vV)

I have always appreciated the transparency you guys offer me, and really love when you break things down like this. Thanks so much and happy holidays

Still taking that one day by day because it literally changes day by day.

Thanks so much for this option in general! It really makes things nice for us guys still waiting on VV. And even though I don't have any helium units yet myself its great you guys are doing so well on the development of the platform cuz it just means it'l be wonderful by the time I jump to Helium, so I am looking at things as a glass half full rather than rushing for the new gen this time day one knowing I'm secure to move forward later. I always feel great about my reds since I can keep them contemporary and viable to higher ended productions

Wow, great info and loving this firmware update. How does 3G10 compare to something like a Cineon Log curve?

Graeme explained this on another thread, so I'm sure he'll chime in and correct me if I'm wrong (good test, eh? ;)).

Basically, the Cineon curve used in RedLogFilm can encode six stops of exposure above middle grey before clipping, while the log3g10 curve puts middle grey at 1/3 and can encode 10 stops past that before it clips.
